A language question...
Anyone know of a good site I can go to to learn German?
It'd be nice to read both languages

It has genders (and much more complex than in english as the articles are not just "the" but varie from gender to gender and where you use it (nominative, genitive, dative or accusative case:Gro'bul wrote:Learning words doesn't help much when you don't know where to put them in the sentence, conjugation, not sure if german has genders or not, ect.
Nom: "Der Mann", "Die Frau", "Das Kind" (the man, the woman, the child)
Gen: "Des Mannes", "Der Frau", "Des Kindes"
Dat: "Dem Mann", "Der Frau", "Dem Kind",
Akk: "Den Mann", "Die Frau", "Das Kind").
And to illustrate the Problem of grammar and synthax, I'll show you what your sentence means when translated word by word:
"Lernen Woerter tut nicht helfen viel wenn du nicht tust wissen wo zu stellen diese in dem Satz, Konjugation, nicht sicher wenn Deutsch hat Geschlechter oder nicht, etc."
It should be:
"Woerter lernen hilft nicht, wenn du nicht weisst, wohin im Satz sie zu stellen sind, (Konjugationen (don't know what you wanted to tell us here)), ich bin mir nicht sicher, ob es im Deutschen grammatikalische Geschlechter gibt etc."
The first sentence would not be very understandable.

Translators are not that good. Translate this sentence into Welsh:
The man ran down the street
Y dyn rhedodd lawr y stryd.
That is what you would probably get in a translator. Now if I were to translate it properly....
Rhedodd y dyn lawr Y stryd.
You can understand what a translator throws at you, but not very well.

It has a downloadable translator that's pretty good. Just remember that nothing's perfect. Good hunting!
That's right, they're not, but I can usually get a good idea of what's going on. Here's another link:Translators are not that good.

They are alright when you are trying to understand what is being said as you can usually get at least the general idea from the translation, however i do not recommend translating something then posting the translation as the grammar will be horrible, and you will probably not be able to get delicate wordings across very well.

I don't know, i don't feel you can learn a language very well just by using a translator, as you have to understand first the root of the word and then the way it changes when you're using it and things like that. In all fairness i found german the simplest out of the other two languages i've learned (attempted to learn i should say) as it is similar to english, and except for a few easy rules in sentence ordering you can put most words in a sentence in any order you want and throw a nicht in there and hey, you have the negative of what you said! (Don't yell at me, i know it's a bit more complicated then that!
)
So good luck, but i think you'll find it easiest if you learn it with a person, or at least someone who can dedicate the time to teaching you it. I highly recommend taking it in school if you have that option.
