What Should I Know?
I'm having a bit of trouble getting registered so I figure it might be a good time to come here and ask a question from the more experienced players.
What is the biggest thing that you wish you had known before creating a character?
Alternately, What have you done in making a character that doomed them to need a remake?
Or mabie if you have some other advice, that would be nice too. I mostly want to find out what I need to get past the learning curve and just have fun.

I would say that if you want to get a better understanding of the character creation process it would be a good idea to read the illapedia (link to the wiki can be found on the main page).
Primarily new players aspire to become magic users (druids or classical mages) or warriors. So i would say it would be important to use the following links in your descision making before making your character.
http://illarion.org/community/wiki/index.php/Attributes
for attribute information
http://illarion.org/community/wiki/inde ... pon_Skills
For information regarding weapons and combat (I added a few "hints" to help players understand which attributes will effect which weapon skills. Vague but if you read both pages you will get the idea^^)
http://illarion.org/community/wiki/index.php/Magic
For magic system information. It is very dated and could use a touch up. I'll see to that shortly ^^
But yes. take the time to go through the wiki and look up bits and pieces of the things you want to know. And feel free to ask questions in the newblet section

Re: What Should I Know?
Back when I created my first character, I was in urgent need of an explaination of the wierd Illarion controls. Meanwhile, we have Noobia and a manual as well as context menues. Also, I should have known which attributes to chose for a magician.David Turner wrote:What is the biggest thing that you wish you had known before creating a character?

The 2nd point made me abandon a character, back then, you could learn basic magic in some days. Nowadays, you need around a year to find a teacher, I am not kidding. So, currently, I recommend not to create a magician as first character. It is no fun.
But most characters I abandoned had a character that stopped to develope one day. With that I mean that the basic ideas I had for those characters did not yield enough interesting turning points and conflicts during interaction. In other words; they were lame. So, I recommend to think about a character with a vision, a character that can change, a character that reacts and acts instead of being untouched by influences. No "my parents were killed by orcs and I want to help other people, fight evil and build my own tavern"-guy!

Ok. I've gone through both the Wiki and main pages (especially) as well as a number of the forums with a bit of a fine tooth comb. I feel somewhat confident in being able to make a character (once the other problems are resolved). Still, I would rather know a little more before I get started.
Is there any information that isn't included in either the Wiki or the main pages that is important to know, especially in character creation and the time immediately after?
Thanks again for all your help.

As soon as you start playing, you're going to start on "newbie island" which will help teach you the mechanics, and how to peform crafts and fight.David Turner wrote:Is there any information that isn't included in either the Wiki or the main pages that is important to know, especially in character creation and the time immediately after?
If you have any questions about particular things you can ask here.
Otherwise character creation is pretty straightforward -
There is no priest or bard magic (yet!)
And there is no mechanics for a thief (though you can roleplay stealing items, which is how its supposed to work)

Yeah, sadly, some do really bad RP.Kranek wrote:about thiefs: be careful: not everyone likes to be stolen, so not many will rp along with your thiefrp...
I mean, you try to steal from a guy, he makes good RP and gives you poor lad some coins (without notice)
BUT!!!:
Three people, who were busy (two with a spar, one with the back towards the thievery) turned around and started chasing.
Never seen worser RP, really -.-
Thats why being a thief isnt as cool as it sounds like. Being a rebel roxx more
