Name of our River

Post by Dyluck »

Since there's a few suggestions as to what to name our rivers in a previous thread, I thought I'd run a poll. Let's start with the river that runs between the tavern and the main streets of Troll's Bane.
I suppose you can still add suggestions if you like.

I guess I'll add Saphire River to the selection, although I'm not sure about the spelling.

I'm for Troll's Vein for the southern river. It just fits.

I like Abhainn myself.

PS: I think it was meant to be "Saphire", but maybe not...

Sorry but it's impossible for every name to sound good in both languages. I can't think of a way around this problem. Don't people of the other language call the town Troll's Bane instead of a direct translation in their language? I think they should just do that for the river's name as well.

well, can't you just think of a synonym for "vein" that Does sound good in german?

In english we coudl use:
Vein
vessel
arterie
etc..

I don't think those other synomyms would sound good in english though, and it doesn't have the same ring with Troll's Bane like Troll's Vein does.

But you see...if its a synonym...We could still call it Trolls Vein, and the German-speaking people could call it the german word for Arterie or Vessel...I mean sure, its a little different still...but I think what Serpardum is saying is that its a close compromise.

Exactly.

And if some german is very artistic perhaps they could think of a synonym for vein in german that was a rhyme for bane/vein.

English people would still call it Troll's Vein and the German would call it whatever it is that sounds better.

So I give this challenge: who can come up with a german synonym (meaning the same thing or close to the same thing) as vein that would sound good. For an added bonus, one that rhymes with bane/vein.

some (poor) examples.
Ader
Behalter
Arterie
Blut
Schiff ( a ship, which is a vessel, which is a vein... )
Boot ( a boat, which is a vessel which is a vein...)

Be creative.

I think there should be added another name to your poll. The river crosses the tavern? So why not "Drunken River" or "The Drunken One"...

Just my thoughts.

For the Germans:

Als Übersetzung für "Troll's Vein" könnte man doch "Trollader" annehmen. Das hat zwar nicht mehr den Reim auf "Troll's Bane", aber es klingt brauchbar.

Why should we translate it at all? We don't do it with Troll's Bane, so why with Troll's Vein?
I like the rhyme of Bane and Vein, and I also like the sense of it. The river is floating through the town just like a vein, a vein of life.
I think, it's the only right name for it.

Sir Giandor said:
I think that Trolls Vein is a suitably, but a quite cruel name, reminding me of much blood, which is poured senselessly again and again. Perhaps the decision falls on a less sad name.

Dear Sir Giandor,
don't see only the negativ side.
Could you live without a vein? Can Troll's Bane live without water?
It's spending life for everyone. The fisherman lives from what they catch, the mill doesn't work without water and we druids need the water for mixing our drinks.
I think, that's all very positiv, isn't it?

Yes, this is the image that the name Troll's Vein is supposed to create, the feeling that the river is a very important part of our lives and survival that we can't live without, because it brings us water and fish.

@sun
yery true. theres absolutly no need in translating that name. the use of english terms is pretty common in our german language.

Hmm.. does that make the name of our main street
Troll's Main?
Or Troll's Lane?

And Niniane... is she a
Troll's Dame?

And of course that makes King (Monarch) of the Roof a
Troll's Game.

Of are all these rhymes just a
Troll's Pain.
