Gemcutting new skills - Should effect gem value dramatically

Post by Serpardum »

The skill "gemcutting" has been implemented per player request.

Some gems are relatively easy to make (blackstone) and some gems are extemly difficult to make (Diamonds) with the rest falling between the extremes.

Eliza will pay a little more for the rarer gems, not a lot, just a little.

This should very soon impact both gem and ring prices.

This should bring in a new profession, gemcutter.

Translation

Okay! This one is far too easy to rant against...so I will be brief. Serpardum..you said that this will allow another profession, gemcutter. Do you really think people are going to entrust their raw gems (now hard to refine) to some guy who says, "yeah, Im a gem cutter...uhh I will do it real cheap"..? I know that it is a safe community..but without a safe trade system, people just wont do it!

This is kinda funny, actually. Raw gems are now more valuable because the finished gems are more vuluable, but it not takes MORE raw gems to make one gem, so logically raw gems should be worth LESS.

Price and demand is just so hard to figure out :)

I trade with people all the time. I trade with people for many silvers worth of things. I've traded for over 25 silver in one transaction actually (a whole lot of gold nuggets).

The act of adding another artificually valuable item to the game, gems, shouldn't have anything to do with trade mechanics. Gem prices for Eliza are not that significantly increased. Gems are only going to be more valuable to players.

I don't quite get the point of your post.

Are you saying we shouldn't have very valuable items in the game because they might get stolen in a transaction?

Or are you stating that my comment about a new profession being created, gemcutter, is wrong because no one would trade with them?

Or are you simply stating that you want a secure trade?

I'm not so sure that this will increase the value of gems dramatically, in the sense that there's not that many people who will need to buy them anyways because there aren't that many goldsmiths right now, and most of them have mined and cut their own gems already anyways.

True, Dyluck.

If the game were wiped, and we were all starting over, everything would all have different prices and things would be a lot more valuable.

But I think there are probably more goldsmiths than you think, just not master goldsmiths. Goldsmithing is actually fairly easy if you can afford the nuggets. Although, at present, it is generally not a profession that pays for itself, and is taken as more of a hobby.

Most of the miners/blacksmiths are goldsmiths of some repute.

As most players have some stock of items (I have a stock of rings being a goldsmith, as do other people I sold them to, and others made and sold) and some a rather large stock, prices are not going to be change dramatically immediately, but they should change a little immediately.

If you have a large stock of rings, and someone comes up to you and wants to buy one, are you going to sell it for the "old" price, knowing that it's now more valuable, even if not to you?

And, yes, this may make some people artificually wealthy.

I simply did this because players asked for it and wanted it, after asking the other GMs of course.

Well, eventually a lot of current players should cease to exist and a new wave of characters will come who won't find it quite so easy to obtain gems, but they won't have that much goldnuggets either so I don't think they'll demand for gems that much. I guess the increased profit will just come from Eliza, or maybe another use in the future.

I don't know why people are complaining about the job, all you do is sell raw gems to someone who is a gem cutter, you sell them for say 2 or 3 gold and they can cut them with their skill and make 6g or more per gem making a prophit, it will just take a bit of time for gem cutters to get good at cutting gems.

Remember, some gems are easier to cut then others.

If you cut 25 blackstones, you should get roughly 6 cut gems with no skill.
If you cut 25 diamonds, you will be lucky to get 1.

The rest fall in between.

The higher your skill, the better you get.
