During the last few days I’ve taken the opportunity to create an account on the website for myself as I prepare to enter my character into the game world for the first time (once I submit my story to the staff for approval anyway), despite the agonizing work hours that I’m scheduled for within the next week or so. Meanwhile, I decided it would be best to browse around to see how much information I could obtain about Illarion that could be somewhat handy to use, assuming I get a chance to enter the ingame atmosphere. Within time, I found myself gazing over the text of the Game Concept FAQ –- which really surprised me.
Not only do players get no numerical values in items like weapons and armor, but they also have the possibility to work with a system that is as logical and realistic as purchasing an item with an unknown value that can only be determined by the skill of the blacksmith who crafted that item? This is probably one of the only massive multi-player online role-playing games that has a steady and firm grip over the most complex tasks imaginable (e.g. with traits, skills, and everything in between); compared to many other MMORPGs that I’ve managed to explore, personally.

Although I’ve urged myself to be patient and wait until my character is accessible to the curious and all mighty featured world of Illarion to learn all that I can, there just seems to be one that’s flowing around in my mind that could use some answering by any experienced player or staff alike –- I’m simply way beyond my patience here. Is there any sort of identification process with any item that has to do with weaponry, armor and so on involved in the game? For example, let’s say a character is roaming around in an unfamiliar piece of territory, only to discover an old and rusty sword against some sort of ancient, abandoned building.
Could this character somehow identify the true form of this weapon with certain ability or abilities? In other words, could he or she perhaps recognize the material that was used to smith the object, maybe realizing that the sword’s contents could be made-up of bone, bronze, iron, steel, whatever…or is there an entirely different concept behind the whole idea? Keep in mind that I’m not asking how your character would perform this action from a hand-on point of view (ex. The keys you would use on the keyboard); I’m simply wondering if such a task is possible from a more technical point of view (ex. Flat out: Is it possible to identify items ingame?).
Maybe the player could summon the assistance of a nearby blacksmith?
I should also note that I’m fully aware of receiving any sort of explanation that has to do with drawing me away from asking questions that may appear to serve as game spoilers for other players. If this is the case, I apologize and regret even bother to post my thoughts about the issue here; I am not intentionally trying to ruin the game concept for others, I’m just curious on a certain part of it. Well, I thought I would ask anyway. Until the time comes for my story to be written, edited, and sent to the caretakers of this tidy project, I would gladly appreciate any other advice that isn’t displayed on forum sticky’s or the website.
