Spells Backfiring

Post by Nilo »

I think it would be cool to have spells backfire. There is all this talk about paralyzing taking too long to go away, and what not... and how mages are realy powerful.

I have come up with an idea that i think would work nicely... And it would go into rp well too.

To defend yourself against magic attacks and such, You could hold a mirror in your hand (wielding it) ((the mirror should take Two hands...)) And if somone tried to cast on you, it would backfire on to the originator, who would get the same/or more damage done to himself.

Pros:
  • Defense against mages.
Cons:
  • Swords can easily penetrate your defense.
  • You have to be holding it...

I don't get the point...

Yeah it's cool and everything. Fighters don't get any advantage though. They are left fighting with a peice of magical glass.

1 - Mages would be useless if you could deflect every spell just by holding a mirror.

2 - An ice bolt would more likely destroy the mirror than bounce off it.

3 - A flame appears beneath you and isn't fired at you.

4 - We already have magic resistance.

5 - A paralyse is a cloud.

In truth, it's the players responsibility to "balance" the advantages/disadvantages between fighters and mages until another system is introduced. It's all a matter of roleplaying fairly. Don't limit yourself on game technicalities.

Thank you, Bloodhearte! You have addressed the only important point in the whole discussion.

This game is in development, therefore advantages or disadvantages for one class will come and go. Get over it. Roleplaying is also a matter of respect. You don't have to do what your character actually could do, but rather what is reasonable.

I saw the topic title and went "Great Idea!" then I saw Mirror and thought...Boy did I assume.

I think that Spell Backfires should be handled as in, there is a chance your spell can blow up in your face, or even target you instead. The more powerful the spell, the more often it would backfire, as well as the lower your skill.

Would be funny to see some evil mage laugh at me as he prepared a Paralyze spell, and then watch his shocked face as he realized he could no longer move, or at least watch the spell explode.
