It is impossible for new people to start.
I recently got a newcharacter and I'm trying toplay her as a quiet nervous and shy woman, unlessyou get a fewdrinks down her neck, but starting off with a shovel and a hammeris no good now, you can't mine, and I don't even know if the shovel even has a use, and with the newfighting system, it is impossible to do anything, it may be easier for other new people who don't have characters who are shy. So due to the current system it is impossible for mycharacter to do anything to begin with, and this has to be fixed, and I'll put this on the proposal board as well.
Depending on which sex and race you pick you get diffrent starting items.
Human
Male: Maybe the equipment needed for lumber jacking and woodworking, axe and a saw.
Female: All the equipment needed for tailoring or cooking, I'm not rally sure, someone else can put a suggestion here.
Orc:
Male & Female: Obviously an axe or basic sword, orcs are meant to be war like and tough warriors, so a weaponwouldbe a good idea.
Dwarves
Male & Female:Obviously mining and blacksmithing equpiment with a book, that hints on how to mine.
Elves:
Male: I'm not sure about these, maybe woodworking materials or a bow and arrows.
Female: Fulltailoring kit, with scissors and needles, and perhaps some wool.
Lizards: Fishing rods
Haflings
Men: Farming equipment, and some seeds to start off with.
Female: Cookery equipment with some dough and buckets.

Well it isn't that hard. I didn't know either what to do, but I just asked. Even shy people can do that. Every single little person on this game isn't to bad to help a newbie get on his feet. Maybe they should post that in the manual or something, might be handy. And even if people can't mine anymore because they broke their hammer and shovel, they can at least kill some pigs with their bare hands. It might take a while, but it is word it.

I have to agree with Moathia, it is really hard for new people or only new characters to get started only with this hammer and this shovel. Even though I had a lot of help (Thank you guys!) it was still hard to get something done. Killing pigs is really hard if you don't have a good weapon like a dagger for the beginning you may ask for one but I believe that there are not a lot of people who would give a newbie a dagger.
I wouldn't do it either in the most cases.
The starting items is a good thing but not only one of each, because if you're playing a dwarf and you only have one hammer and one shovel...well you can't do much, since you don't find ore or coal that easily.

I don't think it's natural for someone to come to a strange island filled with people they have never met before, and quickly becomming well known andpopular with in a week is realitic to all but a few people, normally people would be scared to do anything in that situation, especially with the current troubles the island has been having.

Its not about being "popular" or "well known", the question is if you would ask someone to lend you a helping hand (in what form ever).
There are various possibilities for newcomer to gain a little wealth, when they ask for some tools.
I have often withnessed, that those who are willing to buy a good ara also willing to provide the nessesary tools.
Thinking or your Characters nature and stet up attributes, I would suggest to let her gather herbs for druids.
Thats no physical demanding job and she can be alone, since she should be shy.
However, you (your character) have choosed to be shy and not open to strangers. I want to stress again, that you made yourself a problem and have to deal with it on your own now.

I have to agree with Mothia on this one, Although my newst character is off to a good start, it is rather hard to start. When Pronon started things weren't such a big secret. You started with a shovel and a hammer, you could dig in the dirt and then smith. you smith yourself a sword and shield and some fighting things and fought zombies if you wanted to be a fighter. If you wanted to smith you did so, otherwise you smith, make hammers and shovels and do that until you get some money to start whichever job you liked. I like seeing new changes, but I think you need to lay off a bit. let things settle rather than constantly shifting ways to get things. Just let people get coal for a while (I mean longer than 2 weeks
) before you go and change everything.
You are trying to help the economy, but the economy was never healthier than when I first started. people could start off, get a job they enjoied and become good at it, the market flowed. The only 1 thing that could have made it better IMO was breakable armor, creating a market for smithed goods. Right now you can't make a profit on gold smithing, it cost a full ingot and coal to make 1 crown, eliza buys them for 18 gold and there is no demand for such items. When I first started IMO people did things for luxery. Finding people was also easier. if you needed to find someone to trade with you would go to that depot, if i was a hobbit check the tavern. they might be farming or drinking. Theres too many towns. I AM a member of greenbriar and If things were how I started I would give up Greenbriar, I own a house. I thought it was fun farming by the tavern with some hobbits, and not having to go way the hell out of my way to find herbs. A hobbit wouldn't leave town much, why would they want to?
Lyrenzia only adds troubles IMO, they prohibt theivry, no one wants to steal something (which is listed as an occupation on the site) to have to either never show there face in town again, or spend 10 hours in Jail. Sure its real but its a GAME this is not real.
I understand most of this is on the wrong board but when replying to Mothia I wanted to express other opinions.

Yep, i remeber the good ol' days. You could mine a little, sell the coal and ore and gems and make some money to buy other things. Now there only thing you can do is pick berries and throw them at people that wont help you get started
. If you meet someone that IS nice enough to help you, which isn't many, the only thing they could give you to do something is probably lumberjack, or herb lore. I know a lot of new people would farm to get started, now you cant buy seeds and you can really make a profit off of 18 peices of farmland.

Try asking around. Don't take the fact that some people won't or can't help you as a personal snub. Some people's characters are evil and so being nice to newcomers is OOC. Some people who have played the game for a long time have not found out how to do things the new way yet either.
Keep asking around and your bound to find someone who can help.

It isn't that hard, believe me. Pigs can be killed easily, but it takes some time in the beginning.Elishan Rosewood wrote:Well, I really have no idea what to do, I tried killing pigs, didnt work, I tried shoveling some dirt around and got nothing from it, I tried getting killed by mummies, but that hurt too much
It isn't hard to mine, if you got a hammer and a shovel to start.
It isn't hard to find herbs if you look out for someone to show you how.
It isn't hard to get insides and other stuff from the mummies, for you even don't need to fight them. Just stand near the Mummies house and watch, how often fighters leave all these goods behind. Just pick them up if the fighter don't claim them.
It isn't hard to plant cabbage or wheat, all you need is someone to give you a little starting help with seeds. Just start with cabbage, sell it to Eliza, buy needed tools from citizens to harvest the wheat.
What I feel, most of the beginners do not ask people ingame for help. I tried several times with various new chars, asking people for a bag or some shoes, a shovel or something else. If you roleplay a little bit, most of the Trollsbane citizens are willing to help you. Just be kind and ask.
So many times I tried to make newbies work for me. I offered them all the tools they would need, offered help in any way, offered money. Most of them were not interested, told me that they are warriors, priests, magicans and for them stupid handcraft or regular work would be inacceptable. Nearly none who ever came up to meet me and roleplayed a little bit walked out with empty hands.
But see: This game isn't to be played in a couple of hours. You need patience. To become a good mage shall last for a long time.
The one who enters the game expecting his char will be well gratuated within some hours hasn't got the idea of the game. It is a virtual, but real developing community ingame, and most of the chars have to find their place somewhere in between it. There is not enough space at the top of a community for everyone to be best of.

Falk is right. it isn't hard to have a start in the game. one of my characters played for 10 minutes and haven't i said no he would have get a full leather armor without any payment
. little helps are good and important, a few coins for the start, some cheap clothes or something like that. but don't overdo it. don't give the mightiest armors and weapons away just because the other one is new and have nothing *g*. and there are many characters who have jobs for everyone who wants to work. my character Galim for example helped beneath 12 or 13 young characters to start their own business with his offers of gem mining. and there are other players who offer something like that too. many characters with experince in a craftmenability search young guys who want to collect raw materials for them. and they even offer ya the tools for the work. so just ask around. even mages must start their live with work. and at the beginning you should sell the rawmaterials, instead of use them for ya own. first earn enough money, after that ya can start to try ya own business.

In my opinion, it is easy to start if you know how. But it is the big point, that newbies are totally new to the game and don´t have the slightest clue what to do. I remember those days when a tutorial was around that helped newbies a lot.
Falk is right, but nevertheless it is a bit frustrating if you only can succeed if you need the mercy of others in the first few hours. Within those hours, the player makes his decision if he wants to play on or not.
So, my suggestion is that a new tutorial is made, including tips like "Ask fellow citizens to offer you a job and don´t hesitate to ask them for tools to carry out this job" and "Killing pigs and selling the ham to the local merchant is a fair way to make money" etc.
I´m sure many players would offer their help to make such a tutorial.
PS: On the homepage, it is still stated that there is a tutorial within the client-zip, but there isn´t one.

I don't see why you think it's so hard to start...
Do what I did, merely ask around for someone who is proficient in what you want to do, and get them to take you on as an apprentice. They will then supply you with all you need, and in return, they get whatever you make in the apprentice period. This has several benefits:
- gives you a close friendship to whoever helps you
- teaches you how to do things
- Can be used for excellent roleplay
I suppose it can be hard to find someone who does exactly what ou do, but then again, beggars can't be choosers.
