I was wondering. If there is no experience then how can you level up skills?

you gain experience, just not in visible numbers for your actions.

Ahhh so it's like surprise when you get a level for mining or something. I see that's pretty slick. So you don't worry about leveling up just doing the task at hand.

there are no levels in numbers
for example 24 mining level or such crap
its only stored in the memory of the game but you cannot see it
obviously it helps so you can be better in that skill, but you have no number levels

People still powergame like crazy though, so it isn't doing its job as well as people thought it would

And a 48*** mage is better in physical combat than my 42*** character.

Ever considered that this 42*** Character is not a "born fighter" ?

But the character who beats mine is a Mage, and completely annihilates mine in melee combat when he does not use magic.

There are various reasons for such thing, its not always 'powergaming'.

It's basically so people can't describe their skill level, there used to be a bar under the skill name, and people would walk around saying ooc ((yeah my farming is to the n)) now with the shading it's hard to describe a shade of color.
