Origin of the Mummies

Where did the mummies come from? Who were they?

I heard a story about that once:

Once there was a band of greedy, corrupt men. They wanted to live forever, so they became followers of Cherga. They prayed to her constantly and really just started to annoy her. So she gave them immortality. They were so happy, they didn't question the terms. So they grew older and older and older, but they never died. They turned into the mummies; they're cursed to walk around forever. And if you hack them to pieces, their bodies regenerate, except a year older than before. Some of these men/mummies have been hacked up so many times, the only thing that was left was their bones. This is where the skeletons came from.

The most common story is of unholy mages or necromancers who saught to become immortal through a ritual but became undead instead. Perhaps it is the same story that Cymbeline has told. If you search the depths of the records around here, you may find a similar story told by someone before.

They were an ancient guild dedicated to following cherga called "The spirits" they were not all looking for immortality. However one day, the betrayed thier goddess, and as a punishment she banished thier souls form the underworld causing them to wander the island in the form of mummies or zombies. Trapped spirits that can only be granted eternal rest when they have payed for thier crime against thier goddess.

You can learn many secrets from them if you know how.

Thanks! I am very interested in the history of this town-and the legends. If anyone knows interesting ones, I would love it if they'd write them down, or tell me in town.
