The stars above and the earth below....

Post by Dyluck »

In a time long ago....
Lies a secret long forgotten and completely unknown today.....
It was said that mankind once harnessed magic powers comparable to those of the gods. Powers that sent time and space out of alignment and disrupted the very fabrics between worlds..... Powers that altered the very landscape and climate of the world, dividing it into continents and islands, changing the fate of entire species...

"And so you see, by using the river to form the substance of your water spell, there is no more need to transform water from high amounts of your own magical energy, otherwise known as mana.
This is the biggest advantage behind Geomancy, in that the amount of mana used is so insignificantly low compared to conventional Rune Magic, you can basically use Geomancy without any mana cost at all.
That is all for today's class. Tomorrow we will be doing some actual Geomancy out on the fields, so meet at the Forlam Plains behind the Academy at sunrise tomorrow. Dismissed!"

Oracan closed his books as the students piled out of the classroom. As he turned his head slightly to the left, he noticed a messenger standing nervously next to the door as the students shuffled past him.

"Yes? Do you have something to tell me?" Oracan asked.

"Yes... m'lord." the messenger replied. "The High Magistrate from Nabranoo has just arrived here moments ago."

"The High Magistrate of Nabranoo? Hmm... I did not recieve any letter informing me of his coming. Is this an official visit?" asked Oracan.

"I do not know m'lord" replied the messenger. "He only said he must see you to tell you something very urgent. He is waiting for you in the grand hall right now."

"Hmm. Very well, take me to him now then." said Oracan as picked up his cape from the chair and wrapped it over his shoulders.

Oracan: "High Magistrate Agriant! What a pleasant surprise to see you here in Ghalaveius. You should have informed me of your arrival so I could arrange a reception."

Agriant: "I am pleased to see you as well, Headmaster Oracan. A reception is quite unnecessary this time."

Oracan: "Would you like something to drink? How about some of our finest tea brewed from the gardens of..."

Agriant: No, it's quite alright. I don't have much time right now. I am here for very important official business this time and I will be leaving very soon."

Oracan: "Oh? What is it that is so urgent?"

Agriant hands a scroll over to Oracan who opens it and begins to read. His expression becomes pale as he reads.

Agriant: "An official decree has come from the high court of the Gods. The use and practice of Time Magic and Geomancy will become strictly forbidden in effect of 15 days from now. You have until then to permanently cease all operations of these magics at the Magic Academy and the entire city of Ghalaveius, as well as all the listed cities and areas under the jurisdiction of Ghalaveius."

Oracan: "No.... this can't be..... Why? Why have they done this?"

Agriant: "The gods have decided that Time Magic and Geomancy is much too dangerous to the world. It has done enough damage as it is, and it is time to seal it back into the darkness.

Oracan: "But it has helped the world as well! We NEED these magics! Have you forgotten already? It was these magics that helped us to defeat Madrook Na’han back in the great war! Without it, none of us would be standing here right now!"

Agriant: "Yes, I know. So you can see the immense power and danger that these magics hold. The gods have decided that it isn't safe to leave such a weapon amongst the arsenal of mortals. With it, they will eventually destory themselves, and the world."

Oracan: "And what about the new green skinned creatures? The orcs? Day by day they are gaining more and more territory from us and slaughtering our kind! Conventional weaponry and magic seems uneffective against them, but you see I'm on the brink of formulating a powerful new spell with Time Magic. I just need one more month and I will be able to....."

Agriant: "That is enough Oracan. The Gods have spoken and their decree has passed. Neither you nor I have the power to do anything about it whether we like it or not. Another official will arrive in Ghalaveius in 15 days to check that everything required has been done. You had better make sure it is done, or you will certainly incur the wrath of the Gods. I must go now, as I still have many great cities that I am to inform personally. Farwell Oracan, and you'd best just do as you're told."

As the High Magistrate left, Oracan clutched the scroll in his hand angrily.

Oracan: "No... This was my life's work..... Why did this happen?"

Fearing the dangerous effects of these mighty powers, the gods eventually decided to forbid mankind from using Time Magic and Geomancy....
But there were some who were seduced by the power of the magics and resisted the will of the gods.....

Staioz: "It's over Oracan! Just give yourself up now and end this. If you turn yourself in now, Magistrate Agriant can still plead your case with the Gods and grant you a swift death!"

Oracan laughs.

Oracan: "Oh, dear captain of the Holy Knights of Nabranoo. Do you really think you can set foot upon the mighty city of Ghalaveius?"

Staioz: "You will not be able to defeat us, Oracan. We have been blessed by the power of the Gods to destroy those who would dare defy them. Do you not fear the power of the very Gods who created you and all things?"

Oracan: "The power of the Gods you say? I have it too! Don't you realize that their power is all around us for the taking? The very magic they used to create the world is all around us in their creations, from the stars above to the earth below! The Gods are nothing more than creatures who have learned to transform energy and matter. They want to forbid us from using it because they know we can learn to harness these powers too, through Time Magic and Geomancy.... and then we can become as powerful as they! We will become gods!"

Staioz: "You're utterly insane, Oracan."

Oracan: "Come Staoiz....join me now and I will share with you the vast powers and knowledge that I hold!"

Staioz: "The Holy Knights live and die to serve the Gods only. We will never join your mad crusade for power. This is the end for you Oracan!"

Oracan: "Fine then.... let me now show you the powers which I possess, and that which you could have had for your own!!"

The ground begins to shake and crumble as the entire city of Ghalaveius and the mountain where it rested began to rise into the clouds. A dark hole opens in the sky and surrounds the city in a erie black mist.....

So the gods then created an 'Enforcer' to seek out and destroy anyone who dared to use Time Magic and Geomancy. Eventually, all those who broke the law of the gods were destroyed by the 'Enforcer'.....
Those still with the knowledge of these magics never dared to use them again or even talk about it, for fear of drawing the wrath of the 'Enforcer'.....

As time passed by, the existance of these magics became nothing more than a forgotten story....

.............

But... man was an ambitious creature that would always continue to strive for knowledge....
They would eventually become curious about the stars above and the earth below, and begin to study them once again.....

Though the gods had long since retreated from Illarion by then, the 'Enforcer' was left hidden in a vigilant slumber somewhere......

Who knows whether Time Magic or Geomancy was ever discovered again?....

But one thing is for sure......
Those who did, have already been forever silenced by the 'Enforcer'.... for to this day, no one knows of Time Magic and Geomancy......

But time flows like a river..... and history repeats itself......

Present day....

The high towers of the Magic Academy flickered with light. It was those towers that tended to be occupied more than the classrooms below these days. Research seemed to take a bigger focus over teaching ever since the number of available teachers grew thin.

For the past few months, Dyluck had spent most of his time with Sabrina and their son Adicus. In his spare time, Dyluck would be researching with the other mages in hopes of finding new ways to increase his magic powers to new heights, to meet the old enemies and new challenges that would arise to this island he called home.

Recently, an ancient document was discovered which sparked research for a new field. The document contained many complex theories on how the alignment of the stars affected magic...

"Hmmm.... " pondered Dyluck. "So in order to test out these theories, we must first find the star used as the main refrence point in this document....otherwise known as the 'Point of Origin'. Unfortunately the document only recorded a few ancient star constellations that can be used as refrence points to trace back to the 'Point of Origin', and those constellations seem to be impossible to find in the vast sea of the stars....."

"Hmmm.....the constellation of chaos, the constellation of spirits, and the constellation of blood....."

Dyluck mumbles to himself as he looks at the pictures of the 3 constellations in the document.

"Hmmm... sounds kind of familiar... and the constellations look more like people to me. I wonder why?
Ancient star constellations..... I could've sworn I remembered hearing about an important one at some time before..... now when was that?
Mmmm.... I need more resources....
I think I'll head down to Troll's Bane and take a look around the library..."

As Dyluck searches the books in the library throughout the day, some visitors began to gather in curiosity. Korwin, Grant Herion, Crosis, and Mandil Aglandol, began to assist Dyluck in rummaging through the countless books. A few books on stars were found, but contained nothing that Dyluck saught. Shortly after, Grant Herion discovers something that caught Dyluck's attention.

Dark Doorways- To establish a standing necction to the realms of Moshran's Servants, wait for the matching star constellation, and make the hell sure that nobody brings larger amounts of blessed water to your titual place ! Its purity is dangerous...

"Yes, now I remember that book. Dark Doorways... connection to the realm.....matching star constellation.... but off course, so that's what Drakhen was using.... it must be the constellation of blood that the document reffered to..."

The others looked about inquisitively but before they could ask what this was all about, Dyluck bid them to help him look for records of the exact date that Drakhen tried to perform a dark ritual to unleash demons upon our town when he first appeared years ago. Eventually Korwin found a chronicle that recorded many major events throughout the year and the date of the ritual was confirmed to be August 27th of the first year in the new era calendar. By this time Mandil Algandol had left for other repsonsiblities, but the group was joined by a curious Hagen Von Raben who listened curiously from a short distance.

The others asked inquisitively again the purpose of this research and Dyluck told them that it helped him open possibilities for a new field of magic.

Now the next thing to do was to find the location of the 'constellation of blood' on August 27th of the first year, and then calculate it's position in present day.

Outside, a small commotion ensued about an outlaw burning things who ran away to the direction of the demon cave. Perfect opportunity to do two things at once, thought Dyluck. So the party of five set out towards the cave of the demon....

After trudging through the now transformed swamp and the expanded desert, the company of five arrived at the entrance to the cave of the demon.

Drakhen performed the ritual inside the cave, so first I have to find the equivalent spot on the surface, thought Dyluck...

They entered the cave only to find a few adventurers but no sign of the outlaw in question. After dispatching a few demons, Dyluck and a few others began to calculate the distance between the entrance and the spot where Drakhen attempted his ritual.

9 steps south and 17 steps east...

Returning to the surface, Dyluck counted 9 steps south and 17 east of the cave entrance and looked up. This is where the constellation was on August 27th of the first year...... then today at this time the constellation should be located at.....

But it was still early, and the sky was to bright to see the stars. So they marked the spot and then the party returned to Troll's Bane. Dyluck treated them to drinks at the tavern as thanks for their help.

Later in the evening, Dyluck returned to the spot with Korwin and Draakon Na' Kurtak, but only a few stars appeared in the sky. It was still too early. After waiting for a while and discussing about how to map stars, Korwin eventually leaves for other repsonsibilites. The remaining two waited a little longer and finally more stars began to show.

"I think I'm starting to see it... Could it be?.... Yes I can see it now.... the Constellation of Blood..... Then that means the Point of Origin is......... there!"

Dyluck gazes excitedly after he has located the star he saught.
"Hahahaha....Splendid. Now to see if this magic really works...
Well Draakon, thank you for accompanying me, but if this works then you'll have a long trip back to the town alone."

Draakon wishes him good luck and watches intensively as Dyluck is engulfed in a small flash of light and disappears. Draakon returns to the town and upon walking down the street, he runs into none other than Dyluck...

Many days later, Viola Thistle emerged from the burrow beneath the Old Willow Tree carrying a large basket filled with her personal affects. The southern forest was not safe to live in any longer, what with the sightings of skeletons. Her once beautiful gardens were nothing but brittle brown stalks reaching up to the lifeless Willow. With a heart as heavy as an anchor, she carried her belongings to her new residence at the inn.

“Curse this hated drought,” she mumbled under her breath. Her brow glistened with sweat and her long dress hung limply on her frame. “If the Gods have some plan for us, I wish they’d let it be know,” her pitch was filled with a combination of bitterness, hopelessness and exhaustion. She looked up into the sky and snarled at the sun.

A bright, little red dot caught her attention, however. How odd for a star to be shining with such intensity this time of day, she thought. The Halfling was not an astronomer by any stretch of the imagination, but she had grown up with stories of the star constellations. She couldn’t place what grouping that particular star should be in. Was it the Farmer? Or perhaps one of the gems in the Elven Queen’s crown? Bewildered as she was, she continued on at a brisk place. This was no place to stand with one’s head in the clouds.

When she reached the cobbled area just inside the south gate, she sat the heavy basket down, leaned against the wall and wiped her brow. This would have to be the last load carried to the inn, for if she attempted another, surely she would pass out from heat stroke. Pushing the sweat-drenched locks of hair from her face, she looked up once again to the sky. The bright little dot seemed to have moved. She squinted and shaded her eyes from the sun. Perhaps it was one of those odd occurrences only the wise know of, like when the moon blocked the sun for a short time. Viola shrugged, picked up her basket and headed for the tavern for a sip of Brandy before starting out for the inn again.

It was difficult to concentrate in his meditation under the dry climate these days, but today it seemed even hotter than usual. Even the curious squirrels that would clamber about his head and shoulders refused to come out from beneath the bushes.

Opening his eyes, the silent elf let out a deep breath. That would be enough meditation for today he though. Wiping a drop of sweat under his cheek, he stood up and headed outside the clearing to look for some fruits. My mind must be growing stronger, to be able to stay still for so long under this heat he thought to himself.

Outside, he picked a few berries and plopped them in his mouth as he wiped some more sweat off with his sleeve. He walked a short distance to find a cherry tree in a small grove. Reaching up he plucked a few cherries to find a bright red sparkle behind one of them...

What in the name of the gods?
He rubbed his eyes and blinked and looked at the strange red spot in the sky. What kind of star shines so bright and so red in the middle of the day? This cannot be a good sign. I should seek the counsel of the elders.

Taking a few more cherries to quench his thirst for the way back, the elf turned and headed off back into the depth of the woods.

For hundreds upon hundreds of years she had studied the stars in the night skies. She found a calmness and tranquility from basking in their light that she never did find anywhere else much. Listening to the stories they told of times of past and times to come, it aided her in her telling of fortunes to earn a few trinkets here and there.

Every star, she knew like the back of her hand. But that night, she spotted the unknown red star in the skies, glowing with a foreboding aura. In all her years she had never seen a star so red, nor had she known from whence it came. However or wherever this heavenly body came from, she could not foresee its meaning nor destiny. But something told her that it would not be good.

It was early Monday morning when Viola emerged from the inn with her large basket of items and several dresses slung over her arm. She had paid and thanked Fieps for the rental of the room and returned her key to the busy innkeeper.

How nice Rosa and Crosis were to offer to let her stay with them for a while. Poor Rosa was still suffering the effects of the stab wound she received earlier in the summer and Viola was happy she could offer some assistance to her. She walked in a waking dream of baking bread and playing with little Olivia and being part of a family again.

It wasn’t until she turned down the path to the Smallburrow home that Viola noticed the fiery spot far above her. She stopped and looked to the sky perplexed. She watched as a fluffy white cloud passed and obscured the brilliant red spot. She wasn’t sure if the cloud was carried on by a slight wind far above her or if the fiery spot moved passed the cloud.

“I’ll have to ask Crosis and Rosa what they think of this,” she muttered to herself. She bit her lower lip, “Certainly can’t be a star if it is getting closer.” She hurried down the path to the burrow and rapped on the door.

For days, she found herself staring at the skies, especially at the ominous red star that appeared even during the day. It grew bigger day by day, until she realized it must be getting closer. This she concluded, could not be a star after all. A blazing tail of fire on the end of heavenly body confirmed her suspicion that it was a meteorite, though it seemed to fall with an unusually slightly slower speed than one would expect.

It was falling from the skies, but would it be so unfortunate as to land on the dear town of Troll's Bane? She prayed that the stars would tell her it wouldn't.

Just outside of the Smallburrow home, Viola stirred a boiling cauldron with a large stick. A thick steam rose from the pot and Vivi wiped the droplets of sweat from her neck. She brought the stick out, examined the pair of grass-stained breaches that hung from it and dunked it back in for more soaking.

Just as she pulled out a pair of Crosis underclothes from the wash basin, she heard a loud sizzling noise right about her head. A large fiery ball was arching slowly across the sky. Viola dropped the stirring stick and watched with an open mouth as it slowly fell beyond the horizon to the south.

A half second later, a very loud explosion rippled through the island. The laundry completely forgotten, Viola ran back into the the burrowing shouting for Rosa and Crosis.

Crosis napped in his favorite chair, he had more time to do as he pleased now that Viola was around to help with some of the chores. As the sound of an explosion echoed through the land, he quickly awoke from his sleep. Moments later Violas voice was heard throughout the home, Crosis got to his feet as Viola entered.

"Viola! What happened?" he asked.

For a long moment, the stunned halfling could only shake her head at Crosis and move her mouth, though no words were spoken. Finally, with a slightly shaky voice, she arched her hand over her head, "There was this big fireball that flew across the sky." She paused a moment to recollect her memory. "It went right over the burrow. I swear I could feel its heat," she exclaimed. "Then just over the southern forest, it seemed to slow...then vanished behind the hill." She looked up at Crosis, with a mixture of excitement and fear, "Didn't you feel the earth shake and hear it rumble when it crashed?" she squeaked.

Viola clasped her hands hand walked briskly to the window, as if the view would somehow satisfy her curiosity and stay her fear.

A few days after the meteor crashed, a half dead elf clinging onto a piece of driftwood washes onto the southwest beaches. He barely manages to crawl ashore with his arms and lays in the sand on his back, gasping for breath and writhing in pain. His lips are dry white and one of his legs seems to have suffered a nasty gash.

He finally manages to find enough strength to call out:
"Help!... Can anybody hear me? Please.... help me........"

Cherria had been down at the beach, hoping to find some herbs among the vegetation along the coastline when her elven ears caught the faint sound of a voice nearby. It sounded like a man calling for help, so she followed the voice until she came to where the injured elf laid.

She cringed at the sight of the blood and the wound, so she quickly took out a healing potion and poured some of the liquid into his mouth while holding his head up. "Is that better?"

After a laborious walk, with what assistance Cherria could provide, the elf dragged his badly injured body into the nearest building. Breathing heavily and clutching his side in pain, he fell back into a chair.

Disturbed by the noise, Viola glanced over the top of her book at the two entering. To say the elf looked a bit disheveled would have been an understatement. He garments were torn and dirty. A brilliant red stain had spread on his breeches, a large wound obviously beneath. Above all, his complexion worried Viola the most. So frightfully pale was he that his lips had turned white.

Viola dropped her book as she sprung from her seat in the corner of the room. With her bag in hand, she rushed to the elf’s side. Bringing a variety of bandages and ointments out as she spoke, she inquired of Cherria, “What tragedy has befallen your friend?”

The last thing Valenas remembered was seeing an elven woman and a halfling woman moving him before he fell unconcious. His sight slowly returned to him as he rubbed his eyes and blinked. He rolled his head to the side to see where he was, and realized he was resting on a soft pillow and a comfortable bed.

He managed to gather enough strength to push himself up on one elbow and saw a little halfling finish wrapping bandages around his leg. He instantly recognized her as the same woman who he saw at the beach before he lost conciousness. She must have brought me back to this place along with the other elf and restored me back to health, he thought.

"Thank you so much for saving me," the elf managed with a weak voice as his stomach growled. "I need to ask you for another favor though," the elf smiled weakly. "Do you think you could cook me a meal?"

With the elf's weakened condition, Viola thought perhaps a light broth and bread would be the most suitable meal for him. She helped the elf to a table and ordered the meal from a serving girl.

Moments later, a steaming bowl of vegatable broth and a loaf of soft, fresh bread sat before the elf. Viola settled herself at the table, curious to know who the elf was.

As he gobbled down the food with amazing speed, he noticed the halfling staring at him from the side. He smiled with a full mouth and swallowed his food. "You see, I was riding on a ship on it's way to this island a few days ago, but as luck would have it, we ran into a terrible storm. Lightning struck our sails, and the resulting wreck gave me these injuries and left me drifting at sea. So as you can imagine, I was very exhausted and hungry!" the elf chuckled.

"Oh how rude of me! My name is Valenas. Many thanks to you again for saving my life. What may I call you?"

After hearing murmurs of a great explosion since he had left, Brendan travelled the breadth and height of Troll's Bane to find the tiniest bit of information. Arriving at the inn, he is delighted to be greeted by the sight of Viola.

Brendan's words roll from his mouth..."Feel up to that picnic yet Vi....oh my...whom is this gent...and what happened to him?"

"Perhaps I should fetch a healer for him...what d'you think Vivi?"

Bumbol comes running with a bucket of water and a peice of cloth. He had had enough foresight to store water. He ran to Viola's side after a brief hello to Brendan.

"I came as soon as I heard" He said to Viola. "I brought this water and a cloth, I am not sure if they'll help much. Just tell me what you need Viola and I'll get it."

Viola grinned as the elf dunked the bread into his broth and told her of his journey to the island. The halfling lady tilted her head at his introduction, "I'm pleased to make your acquaintance, Valenas. I am Viola. "A restful night and attention to your leg for the next week, and you shall be right as rain again."

Just as Viola was going to ask the elf what beckoned him to their small island, Brendan and Bumbol arrived. Viola smiled to each in turn.

"I've been waiting for you to call upon me, Mr. Mason. I thought perhaps you had forgotten our date," Vivi teased the halfling. "This is Valenas. He was shipwrecked, but, seeing he has a mighty appetite, I have hope for a full recovery."

As Bumbol rushed to her side, Viola held her hand up. "I think his wounds will be fine," she said smiling. "Perhaps he would fancy some elven wine, now he is done with his dinner though."

Vivi chuckled over the excitement one stranger could bring to their small town. As Bumbol and Brendan pulled up a seat, Viola continued her conversation with the elf.

Valenas smiled and thanked the other two for their concern of his injuries. "It's not really as bad as it looks," he said. "I have some healing abilities of my own, and now that I have my strength back, it will only be a matter of time before I'm up and running again!"

The elf recovered quite quickly in fact, for he had already began to use his senses to detect the magical energies he came so urgently to investigate, though his face showed no sign of it.

He patted his stomach and was delighted at the sound of wine. He spent a good deal of time conversing with the halflings and asked them many questions.

Do the many races get along well living in together here?
Where can I find a merchant with the best deal in arrows?
Who tailors the most durable pair of boots?
Why have I barely noticed a tree around here?
Did a rock of fire crash on the island some time ago?

Later, he looked out the window and pointed at the Lofty Mountains where the Magic Academy stood.
"Who or what is on that mountain?" he inquired.

Brendan jumps to his feet to answer the last question...

"Up there, eh...well, that's the Magic Academy..a man caled Dyluck lives up there training young mages in their magic ways..

I'm sure he'd be curious to meet a newcomer such as yourself...that's if he even is up there right now..."

After continuing to converse for hours on many things throughout supper, each retired to their rooms and slept for the night.
The next morning, Valenas had disappeared and a note was left under the door of the halflings' room.

Dear Viola, Brendan, and Bumbol.

I give my most sincere grattitue to all of you for taking care of me, and spending the time to tell me so many things about your land. Thank you especially Viola, for saving my life and treating my injuries. Although I have no money or item of value to repay you all, I can cook a wonderful meal for you all. Let me show you my family recipe and I promise it will make your meals much more wonderful from now on. Right now, I must first travel to the Magic Academy for some urgent business. However, meet me tomorrow morning downstairs at the kitchen and I will show you my cookery. Don't be late!

Best wishes,
Valenas Nerul
