Request for help and my current state in the project
I have been working on Illarion for about 4 years now and it grow bigger and bigger. My primary intention was to program a computer game, but as soon as we released Illarion to the public, this task (that I enjoyed) was more and more covered with other tasks that, at the time where they arose, no one other was willing to do (we were two in the beginning...). I did them, with decreasing sparetime for me (now my sparetime additionaly decreases because I have left university and work). Therefore working on Illarion lost its joy for me and I got a little bit lazy during the past year. My only motivation to keep on working was, that I did see Illarion dying when I would leave. Since a team of programmers from Shi'vocs University is currently programming a new client, I refrained from updating my client. I will now take the chance to retire from active Illarion project work and will only take small tasks from now on, that are sure that they do not create ongoing work for an undefined period of time. So I will finaly after four years will have the oportunity to actualy play the game, and will perhaps aid in some quest activity.
Therefore we are currently searching for a person to aid us with the emails to character_requests@illarion.org.
The person would basicaly do these things:
1) receive email
2) check provided password of the person in the database.
3) alter the data in the database
4) reply with a short mail (usualy only "done")
Therefore you should be:
- an older, well known (=trusted) character, because you get to handle passwords.
- be able to operate some kind of database tool (I used simply SQL on the server, but there are tools, that simply show the data on your computer too). This shouldn't be the difficult part, once the tool is set up!
I would say that the mails to character_requests@illarion.org are usualy one or two each day.

I would love to help if it was possible, but I am aware of my shortcomings and therefore will not apply, knowing the answer. (lack of time is not shortcoming, lack of knowledge and skill however are)
The things I wanted to say:
In my early days (or not so early days) I might have pissed you off couple of times. However, thank you for taking time to read and reply, even tought the grammar of those e-mails was not even close to acceptable and the ideas included were mostly good-old nonsense. Hopefully I didn't bring too much work for you and if so, I apologise. Anyways, you are the one of the Illarion crew that I respect the most (or fear?), if you wouldn't be you, Illarion would not be the same to me.
Thank you - hopefully see you still around.

Dear Bror,
First off all thanks for all your effort over all those years.
Actually it makes me sad to see you leave the project officialy, but i really do understand your reasons.
Hopefully you will keep your eye on illarion and make sure the baby is making its way you (maybe others) thought off.

Hey Bror, thanks for making illarion the way it is now! I really dont know you, because we havent had a conversation or anything on the boards, plus I only joined around nov. last year, but I really love the game. Anyway, as Martin said, I hope you stay in one way or another, because it would only better the game ((I look forward to these "quests" you speak off!)).

Feel free to apply, even if some persons already offered their help. We will discuss whom to choose, on the GM boards (since I hardly don't know the new players, nor how they are trusted in the game)
I remember the good old days, when I was in the game to yell at some rulebreaker and some PKs threatened to kill me. My "fans" stood around me and said "Pah, Bror is invincible!".... Two hits from the PK and I crumbled to dust...
I doubt, that I will play with Bror, since people might tell, that he has "cheated skills" (since he was a GM character). In this case it isn't much to loose except some background stories.... Even if he was a GM, his skills were near to zero and attributes were standard.Salathe wrote:bror is a lizard right? So thats good news, another lizardmen in town

I first played back in December 2001. My forum name was DaveyCrocket. I don't remember my character's name. (I think it was Sturm). But I had to leave because of family and working two jobs. I just didn't have a lot of spare time. Plus I had to cancel my internet service because of a lack of funds.
I was going to try to learn how to make games on my own. I bought a book on programming in C++ but then realized the program costed more than what I could put into it. So now I have the book but no program to use it on.
I got my internet service back and played a few text based muds and finally found Illarion again after some searching. Well anyhow, I came back and It's still great. The skills are a lot harder, but I guess that's a plus.
I'm glad you're not leaving but will still stick around and finally get to play the game you have worked so hard to create.

:D
Of course, I would be most happy to help Illarion along in any way possible!
I've got a backround of working with Databases, and I am on the internet virtually all the time when I'm at home and work. (Yes, I have no life.) I'd be more than happy if you decided to take up my offer.
{I don't even mind doing all the 'under-dog' work.}

Are you saying that we should 'feel free to apply' even tought we would not propably fill all the requirements?Feel free to apply, even if some persons already offered their help. Man... all the GMs are leaving recently... hope they'll be some left.
Sorry to see you go, Bror, but we'll keep our eyes on the recently joined list for the forum to see your new screen name.
I hope Shi'voc's team can match the legacy that Bror has left, but I doubt it.
Good luck in all your future exploits.
Signed,
Paul Laffing

Imagine how many hearts must have been broken that day as those "fans" lost their faith.
There's always going to be some who are "Hey Bror, my best friend in the whole world!" and some who are "Yesss! I killed Bror! THE Bror!"

Fact is, I'm glad they are hiring Gms with skill in things. In one game, they hired people who behaved well ( I would have been a Gm, but The head Gm was really annoying me one day by insulting me. I got banned that say, and the guy I really hated got the job. I always have to argue.
)
I say, good luck to you. I hope you do well at whatever you do.
Personally, I'm too young to do this. I've been learning a lot of computer languages recently, but I really need to study a few in school. Maybe when I'm a little older and smarter, I'll wait for an opening. Until then, it's bottles of cola and studying computer coding til 8 Am, and then go to school.

Thanks everybody for offering your help. This shows us, that some people enjoy this game so much they even want to invest their spare time to enable others to play.Bror wrote:We will discuss whom to choose, on the GM boards (since I hardly don't know the new players, nor how they are trusted in the game)
We have discussed the offers in the team and picked Aragon.
@Aragon: expect an email soon.
