Does standing on or beside an anvil actually help your smithing skill to increase?

But how can your character smith without an anvil?

Can you sail without a ship, or drive without a car?

well see mishrack, what i did was hold coal and iron in one hand and bashed on it with my hammer, until it turned into some nice armor
