Breaking items

Post by Hermie »

I think thinks break too easily, today one of my chars broke 3 sickles in as many minutes. Could the time an item takes to break be a bit longer please?

It only takes one rock in the ground to seriously damage a sickle...

I'm not just mentioning sickles. I mean all items. I dont mind them breaking, but if it wasnt so often! Like fishing. Realistically how often would you drop your rod? Not everyday I can tell you! :D

See it from this point:
By breaking so fast, you can sell more of these things to others and make so more profit.

Not really, everything I break I can make, but its just hassle, I have to go mining with an army of shovels.

Keep in mind that these items are not the quality we have today. A fishing rod made of a branch of a tree is much easier to break than a metal one, and what do you think the fishing line is made of? The blade of an axe would fall off alot more often, a saw would wear out more often...

i dont think buckets should break, but instead have the water just fall out, shovel breaking is absolutely no problem, i just bring in one shovel then when it breaks i make another. And fishing is too easy as it is already so the breking of poles makes it harder, in real life how many fish do you catch in a minute? In Illarion how many fish do you catch in a minute? even someone who doesnt know the skill of fishing will get about 10 fish in a minute

Hey Astral I think you would find the quality of things today, especialy tools are 'for want of another word' crap. Compaired to those of old.

Same with electrical appliances today...it is just me or are TV life times getting shorter and shorter! like about 1 year.

Thing are just not made like they used to be. so 'realisticaly speaking' Illarion items should last longer. A rock would not break a sycle! you dont use it like a pick axe. It just blunt/dent the blade which would be fixed up with 15 minuites on an Arkansas stone.

shovles and lumber axes...what with the new weight limit system now implace you just cant carry around loads of tools, and treking back and forward to replace broken tools is...a missery.

You wouldnt want tools to last too long but say...just a bit longer than they do at the moment would make life....truly blissful.

Remember illarion time passes differently than RL time. So what is 5 minutes in illarion could be hours in RL time, hence the breaking of your tool. Seeing it from the perspective of RL time of course you will think "wow that tool broke quickly". But if you change your perspective as befits illarion time then you will understand.

hm..ok I see the pont of view about time scale...but then if you break 3 axes in 5 minuites (which in a real life time scale, taking out the fact that you could be an unlucky person.) would surgest you hade been working for months, (after all an axe should last months even years not days.

so for argument sake, an axe lasts 1 month, you break 3..you have been wroking nonstop with no sleep or rest for 3 months?

errr drathe, i think it would probobly take a day or two to cut down a tree, therefore cant really argue for axes because an axe should break that way you can chop down the whole forest with a single axe.

nahh we are not cutting down great oaks here are we, we are talking illarion pine trees, European pine trees are approx 30-60 cm wide. depending on growing conditions.

So you can cut a damn good load down in a day!......ooh alrigh ill shut up, I just want my axes to last longer  boo hoo.

Aww, you upset Drathe now! Meanies! ButI do agree things break easily. And it doesnt matter about the quality of a fishing rod!!! It says it slips out of your hands! And even if fishing rods werent quality they would be rougher, therefore give you better grip. If items break it should be possible to repair them, new skill.

I think that until a Day/Night/Time system for illarion is implemented this issue of how often items should break is kind of based on unstable foundations for both sides.

Just dunking a bucket in water doesn't break it, I agree. But most people do their baking near town, and get the water from the stream. Considering the width of the stream, it can't be too deep. Filling a whole bucket of water with a single motion, you are bound to hit a few rocks. Most people don't dip their buckets into the water and usher it in with their fingers. So consider a wooden bucket being basked against the rocks of a stream. Then you can see why buckets break...

I also agree with the axe breaking. I have probably cut the entire forest south of town nearly five times, with only two axes. We're talking about a little blade attatched to a segment of a branch, probably held together with twine of sort. Even a master lumberjack couldn't do that in real life. Keep in mind that when you cut down a tree, you are not carefully making sure the axe doesn't get damaged, you are using it to damage a tree. So axes should also break more often.

@Drathe:
Now we know what the cavemen did, their television sets would've lasted them forever.

cavemen and television sets?!? well anyways i SUPPOSE you could somehow manage to be careless enough to break a bucket, but then how are trout living in the same few inch high water stream that i get my water from?

the rivers need to be wider,we need a lake, and the desert shouldnt be so darn close to the ocean. mainly the desert not being so close to water thing

Trout will swim up stream in very shallow water.

The Nile river runs right through a desert in Africa.

umm, im sorry but egypt is not all desert, movies and tv have made it seem that way but farmers grow crops on the nile river banks, the nile river region is miles from any desert. Crocket seriously, if people have lived there for thousands of years its probobly not a desert, get ur facts strait. Deserts usually dont have water thats why they are deserts, perhaps they could move it inland almost completely surrounded by mountains, thats usually why the place is a desert.

No, we need two types of water, shallow water and deep water. Not very many fish would be in the shallow water (I mean, how many fish would live in a stream where there are constantly people around?). You could also wade through the shallow water, VERY SLOWLY. The fish would be mainly in the deep water, like oceans or wide rivers. Or the chance of catching a fish would be determined by how many people are near... I probably should've started my own topic for this.

And then you could have your buckets break less in the deep water.

Of course, if we had different types of water, it would be nice to have different types of fish living in the water. I think someone created a new fish graphic a week or two ago and posted it in the graphics board. Was that graphic ever excepted?

i still think the desert should be farther from the ocean.....it just doesnt make any sense and most likely wont happen but instead of moving it you could always put a mountain range infront of it, then put like a type of "grasslands" in front of it where us farmers could go or something because then we wont have to grow in town.
