Parry raising

Post by Salathe »

i was wondering how parry is raised

is it raised by hitting the enemy
is it raised by blockign the enemy
is it raised by getting hit by the enemy
or is it raised by defeating an enemy

Logic would suggest that you would get more experience for a succesful parry rather than actually getting hit. However it would seem that Mantro is correct, in my experience as well I have noticed that your parry increases proportionally to the amount of dmg you take. I do believe there are other factors as well. For instance if you go fight mummies with no armor you will get hit a lot and for a good amount of damage but you will find your parry increase is marginal and levels off quickly. While if you go fight rotworms with a full set of armor you will get hit just as often for just as much but your parry will increase faster, relativly speaking. I also believe that your agility plays a large role in your sucessful parry, or should at least, as well as determines the maximun parry you can obtain.

Now I would not suggest going and fighting the hardest monsters you can just to increase your parry. One reason is that it stands in direct opposition of the games "no power-gaming rule." Secondly, monsters ability to inflict damage widely varies. More than a few times I have fought skeleton after skelton with no problems - meaning only getting hit occasionally thus being able to heal myself before dieing - but every once in a spawn there emerges a skeleton that requires me to turn tail and flee. And if I'm slow on my toes then I find it is a long, demoralizing float back to the yellow cross.

parry - to ward off or deflect (a blow, the thrust of a sword, etc.)

In other games there is often trouble with people talking about their skill values and experience. In Illarion you will not know any of these values although you know their tendency.
Try reading the site, and then try figuring out what you're doing wrong here.

As Mishrack implied, you shouldn't worry about how you increase skills. Just go about your business and the skills will come without you 'training them'. I think the only role-playing way of training would be dueling with swords. You are NOT dueling if you hit each other with needles, you are NOT dueling if you are just standing there stabbing each other, you are NOT dueling if you do it for hours on end.

Yes, the last time I duelled with somebody, it was not simply "I hit you, now you hit me as we stand beside the cross", in fact, it was an intricate game of cat and mouse through the forest. First to make contact with the other won, be it magic or blade. We started at opposite ends of the forest and ran after each other, not knowing when the other would appear. It may not rasie skills very much, but it is far more RP and a lot more fun-and nervewracking!

Do I hear the cries? There is something out there shouting louder and louder.... "Delete my account, please delete my account! I wan't to leave and play an ego shooter!"
Be careful Salathe. Think about what you are doing or face the consequences.

For thos of you that don't know... you thought I was strict about no powergaming?

Bror is even more so.

Simply, we do not want powergamers. You do something just to raise the skill you are powergaming. Period.

Asking about how you raise some skill is asking about how to powergame.

Well put, Bror and Separdum.
@Salathe Illarion is a roleplaying game. You should not worry about "how to raise your parry" and "be the best". Because that isn't what the game is about. If you are roleplaying a warrior and you are on some RP quest that involves fighting, and your parry just happens to increase through the experience gained in the encounters-fine. But you shouldn't go around looking to have "max parry" for the sake of being invincible.

I agree that in most cases if you are doing something to raise your skill it is power gaming, but lets have the traditional argument. If someone wants to play a sport, they just don't go out and play, correct? They practice, with the intent of become more skilled at the game. So doing nothing to raise skills is preposterous. I think the description on the website is more accurate.
Carrying out an action repeatedly, and for an extended time to raise your skill, is called Power gaming, and is forbidden. A worse case is when the player is doing something else to entertain him/her self meanwhile (e.g. watching TV). Note: Casting offensive spells on yourself will kill you instantly.
I still think that the difference between power gaming and just doing something normal is how long you do it, and how you do it. As I said earlier just hacking at someone isn't very reasonable, seeing as there isn't really any reason why you'd become skilled just standing and hacking at something.

well what if i want my role to someone who is a great fighter. You know just because you dont want to be a warrior doesnt mean other people dont.

And powergameing has always confused me... if someone wants to be good at a proffesion then how would one go about doing that without powergameing

@Salathe Powergaming: Repeating an action just to gain skill for no RP reason.
If one wants to be better at a profession in a RP situation what does one do? Simple you RP it. A person in all realism would not day in day out work at one task without eating, chatting etc. A person would work at it day by day bit by bit. That would be how you get better at a profession if you wanted to be more skilled at it. Also of course you could make use of a RP reason why in the first place you want to get better at that particular skill.

If you want to play a great fighter, you either
- have the time to play him correctly (RP-like, start him young and play his life until he gets strong - he wasn't born as a super hero)
- simply don't play a great fighter
- play a great fighter in another game

Almost everyone wants to play "the biggest", "the best", "better than the rest". If this would allow them to powergame, everyone would powergame the first five years of playing in Illarion to get to this level and then start to roleplay. So should we allow powergaming until february 2008?

Well my opinion though it may be wrong is if you want to be a fighter you must train as a fighter and how to train as a fighter is done as the name implies, fight. Now unless dueling someone for the sake of a duel every fight in this world of hostile creatures you encounter is a battle to the death, obviously noone goes out to get killed so you must kill. I do not think it is powergaming to fight monsters if this is your profession, if you want to live by the sword so to speak I am sure that is fine. However it can still be done in a realistic manner, noone would take a shield and go stand in the middle of a huge crowd of monsters trying to ward off their attacks but rather fight them and kill them as fast as you can. I am sure noone would go stand in the middle of a crossfire during war so you could practise doging bullets!

But if you just fight like any other would for your life you will gain skill in fighting with whatever weapons you may be using as well as the ability to doge blows etc. Perhaps training is not the best word to use for killing monsters though, it does not seem enierly appropriate that you would go an practise your swordsmanship on a demon or something. But killing monsters does not seem anti RP to me, someone must keep them in check so they do not take over or you may just be travelling the lands and rather than backing from every hostility you encounter you will take up arms. I think this would be an ok way to RP a fighter, but maybe I am wrong I still do not see any other real way to fight ingame other than perhaps a duel.

You are not wrong,
you share my opinion how to play an "build up" a fighter.
Fight Monster, but in a rp-like way.
As you mentioned it is okay to kill some monster as fast as you can.
I cant see any reason for my or any other character to say in a crowd of monster only trying to parry thier blows but not fighting back, or even worse, let yourself been hitted just to increase something we call "skill".
Just like the example you give already with the "Dodging Bullet"-Skill.

Yours,
Loki
