She had been summoned, as she had been so often lately.
The undead lord and his companions were up to their old ways again, often leaving a trail of blood in their wake.
But when she reached Cadomyr and found Chirch in the countess's destroyed house, she was shaken to the core.
His body was covered in burns and marks of torture—even she was shocked, despite having seen a lot in her long life.
In her excitement, Nala had applied Donfblatt to the wounds, which would cause additional terrible pain.
She therefore took her strongest mixture with Sibanac to give the lizard man some relief. S'rrt helped her, translating even though she felt it was no longer reaching Chirch.
At the same time, she tried to calm Nala, who only wanted to help.
And then Gray appeared, shouting at the gates, demanding S'rrt or whoever. Her heart stopped for a second and images she really didn't need right now flooded her mind.
She shook them off energetically and gave instructions to Winrich – at least that was how he had introduced himself.
She began to work her magic, but something was very wrong. First, she removed the donf leaves from the burns, coated them with the ice leaf paste, and bandaged them.
She tried not to let the shouting distract her and only vaguely noticed the people coming and going. Clairette and a female halfling also joined them.
It took her much more effort to maintain the druidic healing spell she had mastered. These geometric markings on the body of the battered lizard... were they ritual markers?
They resisted the healing like an evil black ball in various places. On the wrists, ankles, and directly on the heart.
She asked Clairette for help, who realized that something was preventing the mana from flowing. After a brief discussion, Chirch was laid on the ground with some effort,
and Clairette began to use a temporary magic circle, starting to play her harp. Yridia tried to combine her magic with Clairette's, but even with their combined strength,
they encountered resistance.
She needed a short break to take care of the sick halfling woman named Margaret. She meditated and prayed to Ushara for more strength before returning to the tortured lizard.
He looked as if he had been crucified, burned, and tortured with knives.
Fortunately, Soren had now arrived, and after lighting some Sibanac in a bowl and placing it next to Chirch's head, she asked for a knife.
The smoke would keep Chirch in a deep sleep.
Carefully, she tried to lift the scales on the first joint, and there was something there. Chirch reared up, and the needle she was using to remove the thing slipped out of her hand,
so she accidentally stabbed him deeper with the knife.
There—a glint, a shard... She carefully lifted it out and threw it to Clairette so she could take a look. It was a rune.
After studying the rune, Clairette said: “It was... used to... control... to cause pain... to enforce...”
Then they both noticed at the same time that the power of Clairette's magic circle was beginning to flow into the lizard—to the points where the shards were.
Yridia quickly destroyed the circle with her foot—this could be dangerous, and she didn't want to expose anyone here to that danger.
Aswe had also come over briefly, only to immediately run outside where Gray was still yelling in front of the gates.
However, Chirch became visibly calmer after the circle was destroyed.
Yridia worked calmly and with concentration, every limb had more than one shard in it, and the room was dirty...
She decided together with the men, Winrich and Soren, to take the lizard to the hospital with clean water, cloths, and a good bed.
She hadn't dared to touch the heart region yet – she was not a surgeon, she was a druidic healer. The patient was stable but clearly weak – very weak.
They gathered the removed runes and Clairette packed them in a separate bag to examine them more closely later.
Aswe, who luckily arrived, was also unable to decipher the meaning of the runes, but she found more on his back under his shoulder blades.
When S'rrt returned wounded, as there had naturally been a fight, they decided to let Chirch sleep first. Yridia was exhausted, as she had been constantly maintaining the healing magic, which was now taking its toll.
Aswe took care of the wounded and Yridia sat down next to Chirch's bed to keep watch.
They would see what to do tomorrow....

Re: A new Riddle ?
She had gotten some fresh air and stretched her limbs, which had become quite stiff after the long night and exertion.
Chirch's condition hadn't changed he seems stable — she took that as a good sign.
With gentle movements and steps, she entered the hospital and nodded to Aswe, who had also awakened.
Inara, Clairette, and Margaret also arrived at the hospital, and Inara was very upset that S'rrt had gone on an expedition against evil forces despite being injured.
He would be missed as a translator, as Chirch had just awakened and was looking around somewhat unfocused.
Aswe said he wasn't quite himself and warned against making any sudden movements.
Yridia tried to speak to him in Elvish, but his gaze was simply blank.
She placed one hand on his forehead and the other on his wrist to see if he had a fever and to check his heart rate.
Clairette looked around the corner and at that moment he suddenly jumped out of bed, agitated, and pressed himself into a corner.
Had her touch triggered this, or was it Clairette? It didn't matter — they had to try to get the lizard man back into bed.
Clairette immediately withdrew, frowning, and Inara spoke soothingly to him, reminding him of Mas, to calm the lizard.
Aswe and she spoke to him just as gently, and he seemed to calm down slightly, except for his gaze, which was fixed on the spot where Clairette had looked.
And that look was haunted...
He avoided Aswe's touch but reacted at the word “Ssarney”
“ssrrrrnyyy zzz..ss ka shrrr zztzss”
Yridia tried to explain that Ssarney was no longer present, long gone
Aswe told Yridia that Chirch was the last of the Sea Serpents.
Suddenly, Chirch collapsed, his legs simply gave way; the jump into the corner had been too much for the injured lizard.
With combined efforts, he was carried back to bed.
Margaret brought fresh water; the little halfling woman was really very helpful, and when she heard something, she got it without being asked.
Aswe, what do you think? Can we do the surgery or is it too much for his body?
It is... hrm. It's hard to say. The remaining rune on him may be causing this weakness.
Clairette had the idea of organizing a language potion, but it was too late.
Aswe had already anesthetized Chirch for the operation.
The surgeon took the obsidian scalpel in her hand while Yridia started to work her druid magic again.
Together, the two of them should finally get Chirch back on his feet.
Inara Lacy Valdris looked at the three in the hospital again. “May Tanora... Zelphia watch over you, Chirch. I am sure she will be with you.”
While Aswe precisely opened the scar lines, Yridia dabbed away the blood flowing from the wound.
Aswe saw it glisten and tried to reach the shard with a pair of forceps. It came loose a little, and beneath it—a little deeper—another one appeared.
And a third... this one was edged into the ribs, ingrown, must have been much older...
She held her breath, then a sudden gush of blood sprayed from the open chest.
Yridia grabbed every bandage she could find to stem the flow of blood, which gushed out in short bursts.
She asked Aswe if she had damaged a vein, but she wasn't sure.
Now it was up to Yridia to let some of her life energy flow into the wound again to prevent Chirch's certain death.
Ushara granted her request and the flow of blood slowly ebbed away.
Yridia threw the bloody clumps of bandages to the ground, repeating her chants until she was completely sure.
This time, there was no resistance. The greater blood vessel was closed again.
Aswe very gently dislodged the runestone. She took note of its calcification into the bone, attempting to determine how long it had been there. “Quite old indeed.”
After this was done, Yridia gathered all her strength once more and let her life energy flow into Chirch's body.
Aswe delicately stitched him up and then asked Yridia, “Good work—was that your first operation?”
“No, but the last one I experienced was on Gobaith—a long time ago.”
Aswe asked if she could bandage him now and looked at the gathered shards, saying she needed some fresh air.
Outside, the discussion about the shards and their meaning started.
Yridia was exhausted and tired, but she was still worried about Chirch and hummed an old elven song as if she were singing a child to sleep.
Everything became slightly blurry; she had used a lot of lifeenergy, so she prayed and thanked Ushara, but the price was still bone-deep exhaustion.
She only vaguely noticed that S'rrt and some others had arrived, crying and arguing, wounded.
She took Chirch's claw and fell asleep despite all the noise.

Aswe, what do you think? Can we do the surgery or is it too much for his body?
It is... hrm. It's hard to say. The remaining rune on him may be causing this weakness.
Aswe wasn't one hundred percent that chirch could survive this. the lizard was known for his constitution, the myriad of scars, pockmarks and other battle born defects over his body made this clearly evident. Aswe took a deep breath and then nodded. It would have to be done. Chirch's outburst a moment ago meant they could not wait - a lizard running around in need of a medical procedure, one they could not communicate with without S'rrt, who was out proving that self destructive machismo was not an exclusively mammalian pastime.
Three drops of diluted Rotholzia would knock him out for as long as needed, and then some.
Three glasses of wine should steady her hand for as long as needed.
Three cuts of the skin should be enough to bring her into the lizard's innards.
She flipped the scaly skin back and looked over Chirch, she was immediately taken by the evidence of battle, even down here. Poorly healed fractures and breaks, accelerated by healing potions. A quick sense of frustration passed over her, then passed. Her focus should be on the procedure, not in the shoddy work of alchemists. she felt her hand tremble slightly.
The first rune removal was simple, it had been a shallow pit carved into the bone and filled with an adhesive, to which the rune was stuck, all it took was to slide the scalper under, and force it out.
The second was unexpected, it became visible after the removal of the first, deeper into the ribcage, its attachment seemed much the same, but its positing meant that the scalpel would not reach, Aswe knew she had to go further in with her forceps.
They made short work of the glue, and the rune came out without much fuss. Aswe's hand trembled again, the sharp edge of the rune flailed and in its motion it did manage to nick a vein.
Aswe did not notice at first, her eyes focused more on the rune and whatever arcane carving it had, her curiosity apparently being the most important thing, her eyes then slid over to look at the lizard, whose chest was rapidly filling with blood.
Yridia.. could you handle that?
Aswe stood there in quiet shock while her friend worked. She didn't make a mistake, did she? No.. The bone, the glue, it was weaker than she assumed. It was the beast who did this who was at fault. Not her. She shook her head as she saw the effort Yridia poured into correcting the cut, its speed and tempo slowed, she flexed her hands and grit her teeth momentarily. She would get to the end of this.
Yridia took care of the bleeding, her druid magic mystified Aswe to the core, but she was thankful for it in this instance. Aswe exhaled, looking at the elfess, then down at the third rune, now shown It seemed as though at some point he had had his rib broken, and the rune was pushed further in, it had been a long time. Ossification around the rune meant it was firmly in place, the bone would need to be trimmed.. She procured a small saw from her collection of tools and worked through it, it did not take too long - bones healed with potions tended to break easily again - in her experience.
The third rune came out easily after that, and there was nothing left. Aswe wiped some sweat from her brow and closed the lizard up, leaving the bandaging to Yridia while she caught some fresh air. Just in time to see the results of S'rrt's machismo come storming by.

Re: A new Riddle ?
Clairette arrived first, carrying all the shards carefully wrapped.
Yridia and she exchanged a few words before getting to the problem... these magical shards with this strange runes.
Clairette had her suspicions, but nothing more. She was angry at whoever had done this to the Chirch.
Yridia told her that at least one of the runes was so old that it had grown into the ribs near the Lizard's heart.
Clairette had the feeling she had seen these shards somewhere before, perhaps in a book.
Aswe joined the two and they decided to go up to the balcony while they waited for the fourth member of their group, Mirai.
Yridia asked Aswe if she had any idea how old this last shard might be.
Aswe replied that it was difficult to say, as healing potions accelerated the healing process and so the timeline was probably blurred.
All three sighed in frustration.
“The fact is, they were magically enchanted. They drew power from Clairette's circle, Aswe,” Yridia interjected.
“I still wonder why he was so startled to see you, Clairette, and jumped out of bed all of a sudden,” she added.
Clairette frowned. “A person who looked like me, perhaps? And that would explain why I feel like I know these runes.”
A few names came up, Prea, Akaltut, Ssarney... nothing more than guesses.
Now Mirai joined them, and Yridia hoped that she could have an idea.
Mirai looked carefully at the shards with the runes. “They all look similar in style to me.”
Yridia nodded, and it was clear to her that each of these runes must have the same origin, the same source.
Since the timelines seemed to be quite far apart, it could only be Prea or a creature from that plane.
She voiced all her assumptions and described to Mirai once again the sequence of events, where Chirch had been found, and how Gray had boast about of having tortured him.
The discussion continued for a while until they broke it off in frustration. Aswe wanted to think about it alone, and Yridia had to return to her patient.
The few facts they had were clear.
The runes had the same source and had entered Chirch's body at different times.
They were enchanted.
Gray had tortured Chirch and was definitely responsible for the severe burns.
Only Chirch himself could explain anything else, if he wanted to. To do that, they would need a language potion or the help of S'rrt.
Yridia decided to get to the bottom of this mystery, whatever the cause.
Something told her it could be very important.

Chirch was tossing and turning in his bed even though he was clearly unresponsive to direct address. Maybe a kind of fever as his body changed between very cold and rather hot temperatures. Then and when some hissing escaped his jaw, most likely a product of a fever dream. Most often it was a long drawn “ssssrrnnny”. But at times some different hissing can be heard. Later that day Zlatxhol may be observed talking to Frizza.
“Kssshh the sea serpent one isss sstill in the hossspital.”
“Iss he? Hesss been restless alwaysss sssinzze the houssse was dissolved”
“Yesss rarely talked to me… jusssst obssserved, ssstanding sssomwhere like frozzen”
“Hesss been like zat long… hass been even before zzze pillars were desstroyed”
“Ssso heard how he’ss doing? ”
“Noone tells… but I heard him sssay ssssomezing, barely intelligible. He wasss calling for the former count Sssarney.. to sssave him to not leave him in the dark. Then I could not underssstand… did sssound desssperate.”
The rest drowns in the market noise, a cart being pulled along.

Re: A new Riddle ?
The library of Cadomyr was filled with books, but many were similar to those Clairette had seen in Galmair. Mirai and her had gone to do research. For now the shards being a puzzle and without more information they would continue to remain an unsettling mystery. The dark skinned, white haired elfess had shared her assumptions, though not how deeply they worried her with her allies and friend: Yrdia, Aswe and Mirai.
She had carried the shards to Cadomyr in hope of giving them back to Chirch. After all the shards belonged to him, so it was at the lizard to decide if he wanted to keep them or toss them away, but first he'd need to be handed the shards back. For Clairette this seemed logical and the proper thing to do, the fact that the lizard might not want the shards because they would stir unpleasant memories was just a sidenote to her. Something she did not want to ponder further.
Alas, Chirch had been sleeping, recovering from his ordeal and the shards could not be returned to their owner.
Theories had been exchanged in their meeting around the table on the balcony.
Some seemed more plausible to Clairette, others seemed less plausible.
Without having found record of recent events in regard to Chirch or the spider demon in the desert, Mirai and her had strolled back to the market. At the market, the lizard S'rrt K'shire and a human in bright clothes were talking while standing near a depot. Mirai went to ask the knight S'rrt for information. Clairette, seeking cover from the evening sun under the shadow of one of the few large palm tree on Cadomyr's market square, just observed while pondering the riddle of the lizard Chirch and the rune-inscribed shards. Runes that were to her knowledge uncommon in illarion, and yet seemed somehow familiar.

Re: A new Riddle ?
Foreword:
Excuse me if not every turn in history happened for the given reason, as might be read from what comes below.
Maybe this story is just exaggerating someone’s twisted wishful thoughts.
And read at your own risk, as those thoughts cannot be really known… if not maybe some diary is found in a deep dark cave.
Somewhere .. in a deep cave .. someone cursed.
The information gathered had been useful, the seed had been sown, tension and dissatisfaction had surfaced, the houses had been in conflict more than ever.
And finally their power waned so much, that they were dissolved. The attempt for the elimination of their leader had not even been necessary, as one after the other fled the city.
It had been such a delight to steer him, drive frustration into their hearts, saw discontent and conflict, but even more to feel it cringe when she felt like it.
She also could drive away this priestess that was so close to uncover her scheme. Oh how she despised and hated those lizards.
And then.. by pure chance there was this encounter.. those entities could have been allies and bent to her own will. There was so much potential that she had left her caution wane.
But the tongue of that lizard was so.....embarrassingly useless, no real word could be formed… and then it happened.. those fools attacked her… all the pain transferred by the link they had… and she was unable to sever it - as his soul was thrown back - for too long. She had been in a stupor and had cursed when she came back…. there were those cadomyrian fools around her..
And then finally she could break the connection when this tool lost his consciousness again.
But then she noticed… the control was weakening.. the link severed bit by bit… and the puppet eluding her…
She remembered as if it had been yesterday, it had been what those surface dwellers called the first days of the month Irmas of the year 53, what a ridiculous way to count the years.
The raid that those surface dwellers had dared to do into their realm was most unwelcome and had resulted in inacceptable losses, but then it had granted this present - a captured lizard.
She had used her servants of every kind to drive the remaining invader away, so that this one could not be saved.
She would have loved to capture the other one as well, the prize so much higher, but he was able to escape.
It had taken days… to prepare it… so much effort… days of chaining it to complete immovability on that altar, days of carefully doing the intricate incisions to place the runes, and days to close them again so they wouldn’t show immediately, hidden between all those other ones inflicted by cruder means .
The final ones close to its heart had been tricky.. gluing the first one to the big artery… and placing the others just above.
She remembered with delight how its eyes begged for the final relieve, but of course that was never intended.
And after that there was no choice left to it. It did what she wanted, not that she had to steer it all that much in a lot of cases.
Just a nudge here.. and a thought there. It’s memory she was able to blur. She could not erase it completely and she also did not want to.
Ever it would quiver before her, feeling what she had done… And when the time would have come, it still would have crawled up to her feet for the final play.
All wasted now due to those fools.

Re: A new Riddle ?
Gwen had grumbled and withdrawn, muttering Cadomyr need more bathtubes.
Chirch splashed contentedly in the warm water.
Yridia closed her eyes and called softly across the room divider, “If you need anything, just call me.”
She went over everything again in her mind.
Those enchanted shards with the runes made her nervous. The idea that the poor lizard had carried them inside him for years... controlled without knowing it.
With the help of a language potion, Aswe and she were finally able to communicate with Chirch.
He was confused, nervous, and had trouble understanding how much time had passed.
No wonder—he had barely survived and had been feverish for a long time. He kept looking at the gap between the room dividers.
Yridia was able to calm him down.
“thisssssszz one.....doessss whysssss zzzat?” he asked in surprise—his speech was still very slurred and heavy on the hissing side.
”whatsssssss happpenneddd to thisssz one?”
Yridia told him where and in what condition he had been found, probably by S'rrt in the partially destroyed villa of the former countess.
“This one was in the desert when Szzaw Zzze Curzzzzed Onesss. Zzenn Tzhzisss one sssstoped..... and Zzen has no memoriessss.”
Aswe showed him the runes after he began to regain his sense of time.
Chirch showed a strange mixture of panic and fear without really understanding what the shards were.
They explained to him where they had found these shards all over his body, some old and ingrown and that they had probably been used to control him.
Chirch seemed to remember something from long ago:
“It'ssss dak... it'ssss hot...ssss hot plazzzee zzzings movessss in ze dak.... and thissss one cannot movess. ssss Ssss?
ssssarrney ... wassss zzer thisss one zzinkss.. wassss not zzzere zen.. thissss.. zzzey wassss togezzzer an zzzzen wasss dark.”
Yridia asked if he had been tortured in the same place both times.
Chrich thought hard about it, “zzz wasss zzzey wen zzzzere for faizzz.
sssssmite zzze faizzless... zzzzen zzen... wassszz trap the sssarny one wasss.. gone"”
The conversation focused on darkdwellers and spiders, a trap and that he lost Ssar`ney — Akaltut!
No wonder he was so pannicked spotting Clairette ....
“sszzisss one was... chracks sshrr sss zkkkasskhsssl”
The language potion lost its effect and she briefly discussed the various possibilities with Aswe, including Prea. But Akaltut was the most likely culprit
.
Chirch allowed himself to be given something to drink, then slowly got up and the two elves helped him to his depot, where he devoured fish before heading to the bathhouse.
Slowly but surely, he was on the road to recovery....
Aswe wanted to check on the injured Clairette, and Yridia urged her to keep the rune shards safe. They should try to figure out what they meant....
But first, she wanted to make sure Chirch was completely healthy before taking any further steps.
