RPing is good - but some ppl are overdoing it...

Post by Peace Keeper »

I RP alot, it's what makes the game interesting.  However, I notice some people who seriously need hel because they're overding it WAY too much.  I've talked to a couple GM's and lots of older players and here's what I conclude from what I found out and my personal believes...

Character Numbers are to be considered INGAME, therefore you can use it to talk to people.  Don't go "Heah? What number?  I don't see any lables around me with a number?  #me looks around for a number tag on my armor." when ever people refers your player number with you.

Entertaining ways of RPing with the NPC's ok, makes jokes and all that stuff like what korn did with "dude, where's my horse."  But overkilling it like "Hello there lizard man, would you like to see some of my new items?" "[NPC]Use me to sell an item." "I've made some new stuff yesterday.  Let me sell em to you now..." .  That's obviously overkilling it to my standards.  You know well in advance that the NPC is not a char and is not going to reply to you.  Why do you even bother???

Evil RPing is good, and much needed, but there's no need for heavy advertisments of it going around...  Take our season buddy Santa for example.  Quit going around and beg people to Hail Moshran and kill em!  It's not gonna get you any believer, instead, people are going to say "hey, this Mosshead god is telling his servants to kill people to preach, who knows when he's gonna turn to his preachers and kill em.  I'm not in..."  Just preach normally, go around and ask if they'd like to join.  If you really think killing is necessary, kill those who choose to be AGAINST you, not those who don't desire to join...

Just thought might want to clearify some of those up.  Reply if you agree or if you have other calls for it.

Of course the NPCs cannot reply. But to treat them like intelligent beings is very good roleplaying. Of course you don't need to when noone is watching (hehe but why not?) at least, it can be a lot of fun.
People who are "overdoing" roleplay a little are definitely no Problem. It is great if you can explain "afk" ingame with another expression.

The numbers are a technical game help (recognizing a "face"). So DON'T use the numbers INGAME. Find other descriptions. Of course you can say "his face looked like 4959" or something. But "Have you seen PLAYER number 4959" would not be good roleplaying...

@peacekeeper: judging from the things you said, I would have to say that you don't know what roleplay really means. You said character numbers are "in game" therefore its roleplay? No its not. Roleplay doesn't just mean anything that's in game. There's more to roleplay than simply not mentioning things that are outside the game. When you roleplay you interact with  Illarion as a world, not as a game. I don't have much time to explain roleplay here but I would have to say that you try to roleplay more than you actually succeed. But at least you're trying.

Another example that you might think is overdoing roleplaying is to walk off the screen of the person you're talking to before you log off. That's good roleplay, it makes more sense then letting everyone see you disappear for no reason since we're not all mages.

Those people that "overdo" roleplaying, they're the good roleplayers. We need more of them.

We do need more people like that.  I know that I do not have a conversation with the NPC's every time I go in the shop, but I do try to make up for it ;) . It seems like it is a lot of effort, but it really isn't, it is easy in fact, just remember that you are your character.

@Dyluck:
I do roleplay, except I putted the number thing down because it's on a similar case.  There are morons who use the chance to over roleplay and just litterly get BEYOND your nerves when you're refering to the # on cases like "have you seen the elf goes by 123456?".

@Everyone Else:
Yes, NPC role play is made for entertainment purpose.  I'm cool with it, I said it in the first post also.  But over killing it like you just ramble on and on and on and on and on and littlerly on and on and etc.  Its much not needed...  Keep in mind that yes, we all would like to talk to a life shop keeper or other NPC from time to time, but other people's view gets flooded as well... Don't go on and on and so forth without stopping until you leave...

Hmm. Now this exceeded my understanding of english a little. Gotta read that again. *Grml*, still don't get the very point of it.
Roleplay is a thing that can be overdone too. Sure. But NOT by roleplaying. An "overdone" roleplaying would be, for example, if you sit in front of your computer with illarion on, and your mother comes in asking you if you want to eat something, and you reply "Of course, mylady, i think all the smithing made me hungry."...
But IN game ? Well, just try to roleplay all the time. And try to get other to roleplay too who don't do it. Avoid OOC comments in game, if you have to talk important ooc stuff, then use the #w command for whispering it so it does not disturb others.

Of course it could be a method to ignore every ooc stuff that others say. But thatcould just make a person without roleplay experience mad. So be ready to explain roleplay to others.
In some time, illarion will get an email account system thing. That means, you will HAVE to write a character story, and you must prove to be able to AND want to roleplay, in order to create a character / be allowed to play the game. Of course some of the non-roleplayers and powergamers will not be able to play anymore then...hehe...

I just got this idea in my head...lets call Illarion not MMORPG  (Massive Multiplayer Online RolePlay Game) but MMOCORPG!!!! ( Massive Myltiplayer Online Club Of RolePlay Gamers!!!)

So everybody who like roleplay will come and who dont like roleplay...well... will go play Runescape!

heh

i think i better go to sleep...
