Town leaders

Post by Mephistopheles »

This is mainly an rp proposal, mainly having to do with the gms. Thats why I am not putting it directly into Mantis

So, remember the days where with hard work a player could rise above the rest and govern? Some were bad at it, some were very good. Many added fun. And Fun is what we are looking for in illarion.

Now don't confuse my words, I absolutely love the work some of the gms put into the towns, but there were many valid points spoken by long standing illarionites, like gms tend to come and go yet the leader stays the same. So how one gm played that char may have been different from the other, someone asked if the leaders even remember conversations they had a month ago. Also gms are often tied with other ig matters, so they sometimes just can't solely devote their time to the leader char.

My Proposal is as follows.

Do not get rid of the leaders, simply put them on the backburner giving way for character leaders to do the governing and law creation. Which ultimately the gm leader will have to approve of major things such as laws. Gem handouts and taxes won't need to change as those will go to the gm leader. Treasuries and such must be created by the players themselves.
Examples: In Cadomyr the queen comes out occasionally for tournaments and audiences, but often leaves the Hand of the Queen to rule in her stead. In Runewick the Archmage's most trusted professor governs while the Archmage himself does his studies. In Galmair, the Chancellor's govern while the Don lavishes in his wealth.

I think with a change like this, players will have more motivation to be involved in the politics and take control of where things go in their town. This way players can't blame the Gms for not being around. More guilds may open up, more possibilities on where to go with your character. Shoot for the stars!!

I hesitate to post because I feel like I have mostly complaints but after playing only a handful of times since my return I totally agree with this proposal. The conflict between the three towns is artificial and bland. I can't get excited over a discussion about which NPC is better since they're essentially the same and in all honesty it reads as phony nonsense in IRC.

Maybe a little off-topic and maybe also because I'm so new in the post-VBU game, but I don't really understand the idea behind scoring players on a leaderboard in a game when we're not really supposed to be in competition with one another. I don't see where this improves roleplay or atmosphere. Maybe I'm missing something but it only seems to underline the artificial and forced hierarchy of the towns.

So much of the richness of Gobaith seems lacking in this new game because of these three limited factions and the types of characters supported in the separate cities. For players that don't care about gaining power and political favor or characters who don't fit the molds, there doesn't seem to be much room to play around. The set up almost demands homogeneous characters which is pretty dull from an entertainment persepective. As a player returning to what is essentially a completely different game, the separate factions seem underdeveloped to me. The forums are pretty vague and uninformative which leads to the idea (perhaps wrongly) that the cities are all basically the same when it comes to trying to make that choice for the character.
