A couple of newbie questions
Well, I've been looking for "real" role-playing online for a while now and just stumbled upon Illarion. I like what I've seen so far! There's a lot to learn, of course. And I've read the manual and searched the Wiki and these forums, but still have a few questions which I haven't yet seen answers to.
Firstly, a technical question. I'm running the client under Linux (java 1.5.0_14) and the interface is often quite slow - sometimes I have to wait a number of seconds before my avatar starts to move or a menu appears. Is lag to be expected, or can I improve performance somehow? I'm in Germany, on a decent DSL line, so my network connection should be alright. My PC's quite new too, so that shouldn't be a problem, but I'm not so sure about 3D applications under Linux...
Secondly, about combat. Do I understand right that all I have to do is start attacking something, then follow it around until it dies? (This bit gets quite annoying when the client isn't responding to my keypresses!) Is there a way to see the "hit points" of the enemy, so as to gauge how effective your hits are and how strong the enemy is? Is there anything more to combat than that?
I'd like to play a martial artist, so I guess that Wrestling is the skill I'm working on when I attack bare-handed? Can one use armor to parry, or am I limited to dodging when I've got nothing in my hands?
Lastly, about skills, is the swirly effect that I see from to time when I'm using a skill showing improvement? So if I keep doing that, eventually the colour of the skill will change?
Thanks for any tips...

Are you just from germany or can you speak german, because you could speak it here aswell, but anyway about your first technical question I sadly lack informations, let me answer the other ones then.
Combat: Yes you only have to "start" the figthingsystem, anyone targeted is surrounded by a red circel, you need to get into range, which depends on the used weapon and your char will attack its target.
Monster Hp: No unless you are a gm, who can check the hp with a certaint tool, you can't see any "hit points", but you see if you hit your target, if a small blood animation appears.
Skill: Yes wrestling is the skill you train with bare handed figthing, but parrying, dogding and tactic only seem to increase if you are attacked aswell, you can use armor to decrease the amount of damage you receive per attack, but if you wear too much armor, your dodging skill will be turned off.
The Swirly indeed means an increase of your Skill, normally you get one skillpoint per swirly, but remember you can't skill up on onlykilling pigs or sheeps, if you want to increase your skill further, you got to fight monster or chars, but don't walk around and simply attack chars, that is considered bad rp.

We only have informations of the gameplay in Debian based Linux Systems. Sadly everyone playing on such a system suffers a very slow response time of the client. But for me, the usage of the keyboard works quite fast. The only problem I suffer is the mouse. After a click I have to wait some seconds before the click really took place.

I don't want to come across as a whiner, but I'm annoyed enough about a couple of things that I'm wondering whether it's worth keeping on playing Illarion, and figured discussing this could be useful.
The "couple of things" are two out-of-body experiences (i.e. deaths) yesterday.
The first occurred when I entered combat without realising I was holding scissors in my hand. Only when I was resurrected did I see them there, and figured they probably weren't a very effective weapon. OK, a stupid mistake on my part, but it did leave me wondering why such a stupid mistake is even possible.
The second occurred when I descended a ladder into a room which I'd been to many times before. The space at the bottom of the ladder was occupied by a monster, and I ended up a distance away from the ladder, surrounded by monsters, with no way to get out. This didn't seem very logical - surely if I go down a ladder, I should end up in a place where I can go back up again? On a related note, I've noticed that a monster standing behind the ladder will block the player from using the ladder.
I don't take character death lightly, and these both seemed very unnecessary to me.

Yes that's a very horrible bug which has been around for more then a year. Next time, just log out, and either wait for them to clear off, or tell a GM, obviously explain to them the situation, because logging out otherwise is frowned upon.mt wrote:The second occurred when I descended a ladder into a room which I'd been to many times before. ADDED: Yes you can use scissors as a stabbing weapon... so yes, its very possible.

Hmm. You could try to push the monster away from the ladder, if you've got enough time. To push, simply drag them with the mouse while holding the left mouse button, and release. As far as I know, you can only push them one square at a time, though, and it's a slow maneuver. Also, about training in armor for a martial artist. I will have to admit that I do not know whether that is a good idea or not, but I would guess that it isn't a very good idea if you later try to fight without armor, since I've heard that fighting with heavy armor slows down the Dodge-training. Anyway, a martial artist in metal armor? I really don't think that is a good idea. Since you want to play a character that fights unarmed, you should know that, as far as I know, that unarmed combat is weaker than armed. If you know that and still want to play a martial artist, I think you shouldn't use heavy armor at all. I hope to see you in game some time.
That's a good tip. I'll give pushing a try next time I'm in combat.
I realise that a martial artist will probably be weaker than a player with weapons, but that doesn't bother me. Likewise, the idea of a martial artist wearing plate seems totally wrong, and I don't plan on doing so.
Regarding the scissors incident, I can see why it should be possible. It just seems to be that it's an easy mistake to make, and ideally the game would protect, or at least warn, the new player against such things. Still, it won't happen to me again!

I like you already.mt wrote:That's a good tip. I'll give pushing a try next time I'm in combat.

Pushing the monster away won't help in most cases. There is a "lag" after pushing, for the pusher and the pushed one. So before you can step on the ladder, the monster will block the ladder again.
Yesterday I had an idea how to prevent monsters stepping on ladders or other "exits". But I had no time to script it. Today I'll give it a try, hopefully the TS will be up again...

Also, if people attack you when you're unarmed... Well, that's generally seen as the coward's way.
True, the monster will often just move back to the space. However, sometimes, if you're quick enough, you will be able to move into the space where the monster once were. If you can't defeat the monster, then move it and try to escape. Also, in the beginning, I would recommend not fighting anything harder than mummies.
Hope to see you around in game.
