Archery Freeze Tag (It's not about a game :P)

Post by Friendly Stranger »

Not sure if this belongs here. Not so much a proposal as a "why" question, but I'll present it as a proposal.

I propose that archers (at least with a certain level of skill in distance weapons) actually be able to move while attacking.

I hope I'm not making this as a "complaint" because it's not meant to be, but my thinking is thus:

Currently fighters of any sort are stopped for a very long time after performing a single attack, and I can understand the thinking in that (though it doesn't happen in r/l), but I believe one of the purposes in having archery at all is the range that you can attack from. This is a good thing, and might make archery worth training despite the large amount of work in making one's own arrows; however this advantage is, for all practical purposes, lost either the first or second time the archer attacks. Since the bowman is stuck in one place during and a while after his attack, if the other fighter is a melee fighter he has plenty of time to reach the bowman after the first attack. In reality a bowman would be able to mvoe and attack at the same time (provided he had high enough skill to actually hit the target while moving, but then in real life one can also swordfight while moving).

My proposal, once again, is that archers with high enough skill may move while attacking.

Whether this proposal is accepted or not I will coninue to be an archer. They can still support from behind other warriors, but to my thinking they would be quite ineffective alone versus an armed and armored warrior.

Like? Don't like? Hate? Say it. I can take it like a man. :D

I like, but if not feasible, would at least like the stop time shortened. After shooting an arrow, it seems you must stand forever before moving which as you say, gives archer no advantage at all.

You could make it that he can walk, but he has a much higher chance of missing when he does this, or isn't facing the target.

I know this is crap and i would like to change this but thats not possible
now.

The reason for the freeze are the "actionpoints" of every character. Those
actionpoints are the indicator of speed as well as a spam protection. Every
action a character does ( really everything. Moving Items and talking as
well ) need actionspoints. The "agility" attribut of the character says how
fast the amount of actionspoints increase.

The speed of all weapons base on that actionpoints because we have no
other chance to controll the hit rate but to freeze the attacking character
for the time they shall not hit. Thats the reason you can't even talk
between two hits.

Technically its exactly the same as the paralyze spell. And currently we
have no chance to do it in any different way.

What about decreasing slightly the action points of the victim?

I don't think that works in the end.

This would be very exploitable.
For example could ganging up against an opponent, with every of your hits decreasing his APs, lead to a scenario where your enemy is always below 0 APs.
This means he could never do any action again.

Imagine 8 characters killing dragon, or demon, after another, simply because they inflict so much AP-Damage that the monster can not do anything but stand there paralized.

And I don't want to think of the complains of players whos character just got zerg'd by monsters or other player chars, without any chance to retreat or repel the attack.

The problem is the AP system itself, and that I controlls basicly everything.
This needs to be addressed properly and split up into:
  • walking APs or a real speed value
  • attack speed
  • other action points (crafting, drinking potions, casting spells)
A work arround would probably do no good in this case.

When was the last time you saw an archer fighting from the front? More than likely...quite a long time, or never at all. There is a reason why archers stay behind the melee folks...it's suicide.

An archer should be able to take someone out before they have the chance to get close. Not fight while in a brawl. I say increase the attack speed, if possible, with higher skill levels.

This would need testing though.
