I found out, that some people are in doubt about the positions some people take in the game.
First there are GM's (Gamemasters) in the game. Their job is:
- carrying out quests
- help players
- build something interesting online
- find and talk to players that disturb gameplay. If they don't listen, they will give me the names of these players so I can do something about it.

Currently the GM's are:
Elurín
Latharan Caine
Neonfire
Baldur
Alatar
Bror
Ciryon
Galdriel
Randorr

Baldur and Bror are also Programmers

Sturm Feuerklinge and Bror are moderating this board. This means, they check, that the messages are posted in the appropriate forum, proper language is used, threads stay on topic....

where's the problem in playing an evil char (=character) and being gamemaster (=player behind a char)?
in pen&paper-RPGs, most time the game-master plays evil characters and creatures *gg*.
please note, that there are two very different things: a character and its player...

martin, who plays ciryon

To be a GM I believe you must be able to speak german,
and to ROLEPLAY extremely well. And you must be honorable, and know much of Illarion.
As a merchant I only hope, in the future, I may be bestowed with a godly power.
Until then, I shall give my mortal advice to other mortals :)

What about the GMs that summon monsters to attack the town?  Is that honorable?

We will get new GMs if the old ones are exhausted ;-) , the playerbase expands a lot and new possibilities for GMs are introduced.
Speaking german is not needed to be a GM. It is much easier for us to post german only on the GM boards, but it is no requirement.

i always wonder why everyone, or at least a lot of people, want to becom a GM.
why is that? there's nothing you get for it! you have to do things you don't really like to do (tell ppl to change their name, read stupid e-mails of stupid players, answer questions, ...) etc., there is nothing that makes this job worth doing it.
it seems to me like a big car: it isn't faster than a smaller one, you don't need a big car, it is more expensive, it swallows a lot of gasoline -- why should one want to have it? just to show off? hey, you don't get money! not even illarion-money!

i never understood people who asked to become a GM. can someone explain it to me in simple terms?

Maybe I can.

Many people who want become a GM think, that they could do more. They want have a great Char. They think, if anyone attack them, they could kick this one. They think, that they have more fun as a GM. They dont know, what it means to be a GM.

I don't think you need to be a GM to kill pk'ers...  I mean, yeah, it'd be damn fun to sap PK'er's skills permently, but so?  PK the SOB(Son of B****... you know what to fill in...  :P ) a couple times and you'll have the same feeling!  The only thing I think ppl want to be a GM is they want power...  I think I have just enough power...  Sheer force that helps me whoop anything here, I'm happy with it...  Summoning may be cool, but so what?  Summoning is only made for events, I dont think they need anyone to help summoning for the special events, the admins'll have their own fun...  I really don't see the point to become a GM, but hey, correct me if you think I'm wrong...

I think Most people want to be Gm's because they think they will have the power to summon up monsters to fight with them or edit their stats to max.

Me?  I wouldn't mind being a GM... JK!

My two cents

I think there are enough active GMs, but since they are all from Germany or Europe as far as I know, then they all go to sleep at around the same time so unless they don't need much sleep there usually aren't any GMs during those hours. Therefore I think having at least one GM from North America would be useful.

ps: If i were a GM i wouldn't want to make it public knowledge anyways.

i think, terri (and some others of course) got the point: most of them want power just to have power. it's the same in IRChats: people often demand to get "voice" or even op, when in fact you can't do anything with "voice" in these chats (because of the settings made for this chan) and the ops don't do anything at all because there isn't something to do.
nevertheless, people who know all that want to be op (or get voice), i never understood it.
it's the same here: as a GM you can't edit your skills, and even if that was possible: what should it be good for? this is a roleplaying game, why the heck should it be fun or cool to have all skills pushed to the maximum? to kill monsters more easily? BTW: GMs can't banish someone from the game. if we observe misbehaviour, we send a message to bror who then decides what to do.

i think it's power. "hey, boy, i am a GM! look at me, i have *power*, i have *influence*" (even when you don't actually know what power ;) ). it's the same with voice/op, it's the same with big cars, it's the same with big.. oh, well, those of you who know what i mean know what i mean (btw: mine is bigger!!! ;)).

Thr reasons mentioned above seem to be the intentions of the most people, applying for a GM position at least this is, what you could read from their emails.
So if there are new GM positions free, I will rather concider asking a person, that is on often, shows good roleplay and works constructive on the board, than picking one of the ones that have applied (I will take a look at them too, because some of them have written emails that aren't full of greed for power).
GMs should have a certain age too. Since I can't know the age of someone in the internet I mean they should show a certain "adult behaviour" that makes me think they are 18 or something, even if they are 15.
Now for those who think "Great, Bror want's me to work on the board. Now I will reply to every thread and repeat the ideas that have been given before, write postings like '*ggg*' and replies like 'Yes, thats my oppinion too' - just to get my post count up" - This would be more of a reason for me not to concider you.
There is also no "ass kissing" required (its only optional ;) ). So it won't help you to write every few days how good this game and its staff is and to have the same opinion like me.
Anyway if you have TOTALY different opinions on roleplaying, i.e. you wan't to turn Illarion in a hack 'n' slash game, you won't be a GM either.

And that's another problem : Many people expect a rpg game to be a hack'n'slay- game. And that's a thing you have to work against as a GM too. Your job would not be to ban or kick these PK's... no, you have to explain Roleplay to them, and some of them really get the idea.
Oh well, too few... most just love being powerful and mighty and mock others around.
