First, go to the NPC on the small island and say "I want to become a [fighter/magician/craftsman]." You'll get some items and money and will be warped to a town called Troll's Bane. It does not really matter what you choose for you can choose any profession later on.
In this town, you might meet NPCs and also other player character. The NPCs respond on "help" with a list of their commands. Other player characters usually respond on "Hello." or "Greetings, peasant.". Just ask them to show you the town for you have never been in Troll's Bane before, ain't I right? Stay in character, if you have problems with the commands, whisper (#w infront of the text you write) in brackets like this:
#w ((I am new, can you help me in picking an apple from this tree?))
But stay as long as possible in character, meaning, try to express your questions in a RPed way:
"Hello, I have just arrived. I overheard this is a dangerous place, where can I purchase a sword to defend myself against villains?"
instead of
"i'm a n00b. i wanna buy a sword to PK. which NPC sells 'em?"
