Failing in smelting

Post by Liles »

Why is it that you can again fail making ingots? I hated it before and I hate it still...So why is it back?

Sorry about complaining, it just this really ticks me off.

Same in carpentry... there now seems to be a chance of failing boards...

I hate that even more, its already as hard as it is...

works with the smithing skill.

smelting becomes a little harder - smithing alot easier. I think t is fair this way.

Not when you spend all day mining for 3 gold ingots then only get one then fail smithing it along with a gem.

And whats with making boards? Sorry nitram, but i see no logic why you lose iron forever when you smelt it. please, change that. it is really not fun when even your boards can be lost. collecting rawmaterials is hard enough.

not long ago the loss of iron by smelting was a big reason why the activity was so hated.

You seem to have missed out gold...Also, smithing isn't easy. Before I could get 15/20 copper plates and now only 5/20

its never impossible to fail, now. But i made it a lot easier to smelt ingots and saw boards. I think it's better now.

sawing boards WAS easy. use saw, chose board, ready. there was no need to make it more easy. but failing is really terrible now *sighs*. Shan is an archer, and she has it hard enough to gather her arrows, now you made it even more hard. Thank you. You really seem to hate elven archers *sighs*

People, please, take the whole package into consideration. One can fail in casting now, but mining was made WAY easier. Thus, at the end of the day, you need less clicks, believe me! Also, smithing is easier now; before, you had two hard steps (mining, smithing) and one easy step (casting), now you have 3 moderate steps. As Nitram said, this is fair and another step towards a unified "look and feel" of the crafting scripts.

OK, I did a little test now. With a moderate skill, I took 30 piles of ore and coal and casted 29 ingots. I failed once(!). Out of those 29 ingots, I crafted 15 helmets with some of them being "good and new". Before the change I'd be happy about 5 crappy helmets.

Please, please, please, check the whole system. You will find out, it is way better now! Really, I am the uber whiner here when it comes to low rates of success and I am satisfied. If you want rates of success of 100%, we'd have to get rid of the whole skill system.

One thing I have noticed: The food consumption during smithing is around 10 times higher than before. Is that intended (I hope it is not!)?

I also dont seem to be able to smelt ingots, I tried just about every combination I could think of. If it has not changed drastically then it is not working.

Liles, keep your gold nuggets until you're somewhat near unfailability.

Smelting shoulnt fail i say,its illogic, you use a moult so you cant possibly fail. And not only smiths must smelt ingots,my char aint a smith and get all his coppers by making ingots,if he has low smithing skill mean that he will have a hard time smelting?I dont like that smelting failing at all.

The chance to fail at smelting is around 2 % maybe.

Of course we can discuss about the realism here. But following is not true:
Smelting shoulnt fail i say,its illogic, you use a moult so you cant possibly fail
2 years ago i visited a geo-tourism area of the 'Donnerberg' (Rheinisches Schiefergebirge) in Germany within my studies. The old mines of the middle ages are the main attraction there.

The local management of tourism and museum of pitmans also try to show how people melt iron and copper in the middle ages and more. Therefor some 'freaks' tried to build and use a little furnace with the same materials and tools etc...

If i remind me right, they needed more than single year to organize everything. The little furnance (High of 1-1,5 m ?) was made for only 1 melting process and it failed. Our group of students, who visited the area only had the possibility to look at the results: Some bad melted nuggets of iron mixed with coal and other rocks.

The main reason was the lack of knowledge and experience to build and to use the furnance. It was the first try - so, propably that is normal. Melting of ore is not easy.

1st: Have you ever casted an ingot IRL? No, you didn't. Metallurgy was one of the hardest jobs in old times, in some cultures, smithes were considered mages. To quote Damien, a simple dagger was worth a cottage and a chain mail worth a whole village. So, rule out "illogical" or "unrealistic". We can talk about the game balance. And I want to repeat what I wrote: Consider the whole package. From nothing to final products, you need less clicks now and all rates of success are based on reasonable formulae. No 1% chance-bullshit anymore. Please, have you done a test how many clicks you need to get lets say 100 ingots now and before? Guess what: With the change in mining, you will definatly need less clicks, believe me. If you want to click more, feel free to do so but I hope all the others don't want to click until the mouse starts to glow from friction anymore.

Can' t say much about gold smithing, but I just casted 10 gold ingots in a row without failing. And that's without gold smithing skill...

The chance to fail is 2 %!!! That is a sgood as nothing, 2 ingots out of 100. what do you want to raise there?
