We are aware of this problem. The starting island will be improved.

Just walk up to the guy on the island and say "I want to become a craftsman / magician / fighter". It does not matter what you say, you just get some equipment, you don't choose a class or whatever.

equipment and starting skills. when you start as a craftmen you gain startingskills in the crafts smithing, mining and carpentry

I talked to the guy, or well I TRIED to talk to him. I wrote "I want to become a craftsman." and he just stood there like I hadn't said anything... The only time he ever says anythe hign to me is when I try to use him, and he said not to do that.... What am I doing wrong? I walked all around the island and I have harvested some apples and cherries and even some logs, but that's about as far as I can get.

You have to stand right beside him or right in front of him and speak it like he does. "I want to become a fighter". You can't just stand anywhere. ;]

EDIT: fighter, craftsman, whatever you want to be.

I have say hello, then he says "hello, i am blah blah blah, tell me if you want to be blah blah blah" then you say "i want to be a ____"

I have stood right in front of him and I have said hello, and I have tried Hail, and even used his name *can't remember off hand what it is*... But he only stands there not saying or doing anything unless I try to use him.

As already stated, you don't say hello. You stand in front of him, directly in front of him on the exact next square and say I want to be a craftsman. Its that easy. As soon as you log in it tells you what you need to do. I want to be a craftsman. I want to be a fighter. Or I want to be a magician. There are only three choices, you can't mess it up.

I was right in front of him, facing him, and typed in all 3 different types and he still just stood there like I wasn't even there... I know I am not this incompetent... I feel really stupid trying to tell this guy that I want to become a craftsman or a magician or a fighter, but apparently *I* can mess it up since it's not working for me.

Did you, by accident, play arround with the ingame languages?
The NPC might only reply to "Common".

You may also want to show us your log file, which is located in your characters directory (in case you checked the "save log" box on startup).

I'm not sure how to change the ingame language, also it says human and the only person on the island is Elinas the elf upstairs, so i was standing in front of him and telling him... Is there another person somewhere else on the island??? Here is the log

Ok I tried the !l common and that didn't work, and I tried the !elf but that didn't work either, HOWEVER I did walk onto the dock, as Nitram suggested, and I got off the island... I still think someone may want to look into the elf guy cause he was not really responsive.

!l elf to the elf language.

and so on.

Now think about which language the elf could speak.
