Error Message - How do I correct this?

I am trying to show this game to my relative, and I unzipped it, all the components are together, we made a character and when we started the game it reads:
"DDERR_GENERIC" after a black screen (The pointer never became small either)
What is the problem?, I have never seen this before.

You are probably running a too old version of DirectX (it's a DirectDraw Error)

I have tried it before with an older version of DirectX (it didnt work of course), but it did not even load to the black screen. It never even got to the first message box. I am quite sure that it was the same message, but it never got that far. (Then when I installed DirectX it worked)

hey that happened to me too well it still is hehe it says something about draw and something i thought had to to with directx but how do i get directx8 or whatever the newest one is?

It is either an uninstalled DirectX 7+ or it is a graphics adapter, which doesn't meet the requirements (try switching it manualy to 1024*768 pixels with 16 Bit Colors (65.536, 64K ))

newest version is 8.1 i believe, just follow the link in the Download menu at the left side of the illarion page
