Elven things

Post by Lysu Davanum »

Me, and Damien, where thinking about creating something, to do more with the elven things. Just to help elves in their roleplay, and make them feel more elvish. Well I found something languagal, although it is a ripp-off (I rather make something myself<--hard). Just a suggestion.

I guess the elven population has to find a common language, first.

Furthermore there are different forms like Quenya, Sindarin, Drow... wich one should be spoken?

And how should this be handled ingame? Should all the PO's of elves learn a quite difficult language?

P.S.: I used the following Quenya language guide when I tried to express something in elvish: http://grey-company.org/Language/Files/phrase.pdf

I personally think there are better ways than making a language of which most players won't bother to learn. Why not, by researching common folklore, come up with cultural norms for elves?

For example, throughout mythology comes the belief that people who know your True Name (either the one given by birth or the one chosen for you by the spirits, etc..) have power over you. Possibley this could be true in elven culture. The key is making it unique within the elven community with specifics, such as:

What is a True Name? Is it chosen by the gods for you as a unique identifier of your person? Is it merely your birth name? Must a ritual be cast upon you to make your birth name or another name your True Name? If so, what are the disadvantages of not having a True Name?

What power does someone have over you if they know your True Name? Can they track you magically if they know your True Name? Do you become the subject of spiritual attack if your name is uttered? Can you be forced to go to a certain location if your True Name is uttered a certain amount of times?

Is there a reason why someone would give out their True Name? Is it common to give your True Name only to friends? Is it required by Elven government that you register your True Name?

This is only one example, but if you look into common folklore and practiced of the middle ages you'll find more interesting ideas.

I would also agree with Moskher Heszche. Some day, languages will be implemented technically. If you choose to speak elvish, everyone without the proper knowledge of this language will than not understand you.

This doesn't rule out the possibility to speak your own "dialect" with those willing to speak it, but do not expect that every elf will understand you. I would rather not like to see this as a requirement to be an elf.

I think you will have more success in creating a unique culture by having a common remembrance at times long gone, which result in festivals, habits, views and opinions, ... . Here Damien is the right person to step on his very toe, as he is in the process to write the mortals history. Sorry Damien :D

Even in the case where a custom or tale disagrees with the "official" history, it can still be valid, however, considering that real tales, myths, and folklore often have little to do with the accurate history, so don't worry too much about stepping on Damien's toes, I would think.

I don't like that too.

German speaking people who do not speak english so well complain about english in Illarion. I permanently hear "I can't roleplay in english" and such.
However, english is easy to learn. You have clear grammar, rather easy vocabulary and a lot of people and websites can help you, along with dictionaries.
In this case, I do not see any grammar. I do not see vocabulary. This is a completely new language with only a few sources and nearly noone can help you learning it.

It may sound cool if you know 3 sentences of it (not understanding the structure, grammar and the individual words at all), but as a usable language: Never.

Not so long as you might expect. We could, if we wanted to, implement it within the next 2 hours.

Martin, question;

Are languages truetype translation, or just added skill? ;)

I do not understand that question.
