Ancient will not be required to talk to the NPC, in fact he will teach it.
If I make the NPC depending on Ancient, I feel like repeating the exact same mistake that was done with the Magic System at the beginning.
It seems like the mistake with the magic system has been the wait for teachers........the requirement being a max of three students. This is where the bottle-neck is, the slow-down. Some that have students now, no longer teach, and the process is slow. Therefore the new char waits for a teacher. But getting the runes as described above should greatly speed up this.

My only concern however, is the "specialty" of the Ancient language. I can envision it being as common as elven was to humans before the game was changed, or is there a measure in place to prevent this? Such as only a mage char could learn it?

Intelligence is required to learn this.

The proposals/intrest seem to die down.

I assume I can add random items and numbers into the missing gaps?

No here are my ideas. But beforehand are you completely sold that the NPC will teach ancient? Everyone on Gobaith could learn ancient if that was the case....... no other language teacher is out there........ Is there anyway around such a decision? As for the items

MES - Diamond + 20 Sun Herbs
PEN - Diamonds + 2 Life Roots
ORL - Smaragd + 25 rotten tree bark
KAH - Topas + 50 honeycomb
RA - Ruby + 100 ashes
HEPT - Bluestone + 25 bottles of water
KEL - Amethyst + 5 desert sky capsules

Perhaps Glass ingots too What do you think of these numbers too high or low?

No mage can hold 25 bottles of water. At least Taer couldn't

True True perhaps:

HEPT - Bluestone + blessed water of Irundar?

Bad, since some of the characters who want to become mages have allready done the quest and used up the water. And from what I know, you can only do that one time.

Edit: Also, I would suggest 100 desert wind capsules for KEL, since it's the strongest of all those above.

You still have to learn that much young student... that much ;)

As far as I know Ancient is required to use Magic currently, I think it is absolutly needed to teach some basic skills in Ancient to the newbie mages.
HolyKnight wrote:Everyone on Gobaith could learn ancient if that was the case
Everybody with the brains (read: Intelligence of the Char) should be able to understand it.
So, no the min-max-warrior with intelligence 3 will not be able to learn Ancient at all.
(The NPC might still offer him a book with pretty pictures to look at though.)
HolyKnight wrote:....... no other language teacher is out there........
The thing is, I don't consider Ancient as a race language, thats why its not *that* special as the other languages.

HolyKnight wrote:Is there anyway around such a decision?
I am always open for proposals, as long these proposals do not create another dependency on the goodwill of already established/inactive characters.

HolyKnight wrote:As for the items

MES - Diamond + 20 Sun Herbs

ORL - Smaragd + 25 rotten tree bark -> ORL is the rune of creation, does a "rotten tree bark" really fit?
KAH - Topas + 50 honeycomb
RA - Ruby + 100 ashes
HEPT - Bluestone + 25 bottles of water
KEL - Amethyst + 5 desert sky capsules
A lot of herbs, guess the druids would like it. ;)
HolyKnight wrote:HEPT - Bluestone + blessed water of Irundar?
Since I plan to give either RA or HEPT this won't fit. You would need to come up with something that is equally hard/easy to get for RA.

I take offense to that comment Keikan, my fighter doesnt have 3 int he has 12, so I could learn ancient, just never use magic because i am short by 5 points to learn magic. So you had better fix that thought, maybe make it so to learn ancient you need to have the prescribed 30 points atleast in those three areas combined.

You take offense from what ?

If your character has the smarts to understand a logic structure (language is a somewhat logic structure most of the time) why not making him able to learn it?

If this isn't possible, tie ancient into essence rather then intelligence? Rarely would any char have higher then average essence unless they were a mage............( I have forgotten the number, but I believe 10 is average, so possibly essence 12 or above)?

Someone still needs to explain me why:

Ancient = Only Mage

and not

Ancient = Only clever people

How about

ORL - Smaragd + 25 tangerines + 25 berries
or
ORL - Smaragd + 10 birth mushroom

Tangerines and berries are fruits that can be harvested without skills, just need to know where to get it.

Since KEL is rune level 2, maybe it should be hard so...

KEL - Amethyst + Blessed Water of Irundar

HEPT - Bluestone + 20 Glass Ingots ( looks like block of ice xD )

KAH - Topas + 25 honeycomb ( lowered the number since honeycomb is rather heavy, not sure how many mage can hold 50 honeycombs)

EDIT: the intelligence requirement for ancient is high enough. I don't think it's easy to play a char that's not mage to learn the language. If he wishes to learn it and sacrificing other stats for their main job, then let them be. Or so my opinion is.

Why should KEL be hard to obtain?
Please explain.

Posted: Tue Sep 04, 2007 2:14 pm
by ogerawa
Because it's rune level 2 and KEL is part of a lot of spells. Means it's a rune that will be use a lot to cast other spells. It is part of offensive spells and teleportation.

by Estralis Seborian
But aren't those reasons to make it easily available? I mean, it is part of the most basic spells, like RA KEL, spells that are ment to be common among mages, or am I wrong?

by Keikan Hiru
Not very convincing. :P

First of all, I am not thinking in categories like "level1" or "level2". This is an academy thing, not mine.

Secondly, you only get one spell, this is either RA KEL or HEPT KEL, afterwards you are once again at the "mercy" of teachers.

If you can find other reasons beside "its a level 2 rune", we can think of making one rune harder to obtain as the others.
Otherwise, we try to give them all the same difficulity to obtain. Okay?

Edit:
Estralis was seconds faster.

Dunno... somehow i'm thinking the other way around... *shrugs*

KEL - Amethyst + Mana Potion ?

Since you want it easy and so the new mages would know where to buy such potions as well? There are NPC selling and can be bought from fighters as well. Would cost around 50 coppers (average NPC price), shouldn't be that hard to get i guess.

Why did the academy close anyway?

i admit i only learnt 2 runes from there near its closing but i liked it not only did it teach the runes i Would of needed but also other things such as the gods ect. i thought it was a good system it was better for mages as a whole because in the short term there are plenty of mage chars who are basicly stuck untill the new batch of teachers are trained and if the teacher is on holiday or somthing you cant exacly get a subsitute teacher can you.

I have absolutly no idea what you want to say.

I think I can summarize it (I speak Johnian):

He liked the academy when it was properly organized. i.e. we had a lesson from each teacher and stuff in the classrooms altogether, then they'd do an exam and if you could pass and were good enough etc. you'd learn a rune. This way everyone could learn who bothered to take an interest and in bulk.

i just asked why the academy closed in the first place?

Posted: Mon Sep 17, 2007 7:51 pm
by AlexRose
Because it became inactive and some of the teachers have lives and cannot hold a lesson all the time.

About the ancient thing. It's the language in which the Runes are written. You can "form what you want to do" into words with it, which makes it pretty mighty in rp.

only with speaking ancient you can cast absolutely nothing
