Narmir's idea is by far the best.
I think we should make another topic with a poll, putting all the best ideas, and seeing what the people like best.

All good names, but that puts magic entirely in the hands of the VMA. We'd need a bit of diversity

I see no problem here :p
you can give it to Ules too, he isnt in the VMA

. And most people who knew him before the wipe, and some after know he is a mage type

.
Actually, I particularly disagree with giving it to just specific characters as it adds some sort of OOC bias into the mix, no matter how good the rpers are.

A second, less likely option is a peer review of mages. I don't have a clue how you might get that to work, but I think the following, and possibly more, would make suitable mages;
Isilwen
Athian
Misjilah Mehialho
Jeremy Willowbrook
Allura Avery
Samantha Meryadeles
Marie Tolong
Diraquin Cirmoya
Tyler Ardson
Sideon Vilarion
Nalzaxx Nerenghast
Rhiannon
Cain Freemont
Silas Farron
Ules Felko
I haven't included certain characters because I haven't had a chance to interact with them enough to make a judgement. (and I haven't included my own character.)
which character do you play, i never knew you saw my char (Ules), or is your char a Korwin or something, and i just never got their name, while you overheard mine. heh, sorry, I just tend to feel giddy when people think im a good rper

All this discussion will not really lead to somewhere, for we already have a system how to work this out.

imo magic should be shared with those who want it and who are mature enough to handle it (I.E. roleplay it) Magic should also be made to be able to be taken away form those who misuse it. I also think that the academy should stay and that lessons should be given to help advance your skills with the runes.. gm questing isnt a bad idea but as was mentioned already it would take a very long time to accomplish.

Right i will kick this off by saying I have been most notable for my absence. My computer has been broken and those who have missed me on MSN can expect me back tomorrow or next day....
That said, i know i am hitting a dead point here but what ever is done with the magic system i hope it is actually aligned with what the players want to see in game.
The exact problems that have caused the academy to be tossed out as an idea. Where mentioned by myself in a two posts the staffs response...
You don’t like it go and find another game. So that is what i have done and even with my return to being online I shant be returning to Illarion.
The reason for the magic academy was we cant trust all the players with magic. Well i suggest you make people write a 2k word application to be mages or simply moderate and remove people who cannot role-play in accordance with your standards. As frankly I do not need to be "policed" in game i play for fun. The magic system was for me the final stroke that made it clear it was time to move on.
Of course i have other complaints but that’s not the point of this post I loved this game and played it with passion daily nearly for over a year. When the game ceases to be enjoyable for me something has gone wrong and it is not my wish to rp.
If this community put as much energy into role-play as they do bickering on boards. if quests and GM involvement where a nightly event and if everyone who played this game put as much energy into uplifting the game as they do whining no fair and so and so cannot rp. I imagine i would still be here...
How ever really a lot of the fun is sucked from this game by a wicked skill gain, and the fact that once you get them you hit a glass ceiling where the staff decide they won’t support much in the way of advancement. Such is my experience.
Any way i have loved it here, amazing times many great people I really hope this game goes from strength to strength as its a great place. I will be back one day, I am nearly sure of it just wont be in the near future.
Have fun, enjoy it and i hope this game exceeds all your expectations

I blame the Devs/GMs are making a skill such an important part of a RP game that doesn't focus on levels or skills.

I like Falco's ideas. They seem easy enough for even the stupid people like me to comprehend. However, that may not be a good thing...
However, I had an few ideas, but you all may not like them. Or, at least one of them.
Idea #1: Do away with magick altogether. That may cause problems, but it would stop this debate.
Idea #2: Make magick completely RP. That would be a lot more challenging for some, but it would give people a chance to be creative.
Idea #3: First, the Devs/GMs do some research on what real magick is like and has been like through the ages. I could possibly point you to the right direction. I know a lot about it myself, and I could really help. After that is done, implement it in a somewhat realistic manner. That would possibly require more coding though.
Idea #4: Let me try programming some stuff in a style called "voodoo programming". That'll be fun! Of course, I'd probably crash the server... Won't that be fun?!
I've said enough, I must find that spell my friend mentioned on how to change your eye color...

magic must be implemented, no rping it, no doing away with it. I don't care how it's introduced or how crappy it is, it must be done

it is now everyone shush. this topic while good for discussion has become invalid. the discision on magic has been made and hopefully within a short time we'll start to see more mages. just be patient, even people with runes will need lots of practise before they have enough power to share with others
