Yes. Yes, yes yes. Please! Let some 'basic' magic be learnable on your own. So that you can go ahead and *start* learning before you find a willing and able teacher. Leave the current teaching system in place, but let some of the most basic runes attainable in other ways. Maybe the runes used for the 'first' spell of each 'school' of magic (commotio, etc.).

It limits your rp possibilities greatly to only be able to create a Novice Mage.
Maybe some people would love to play a little experienced mage seeking to share knowledge with those mages around now,
instead of being a little student knowing nothing and having to be nice and friendly and looked down upon by the mages already around.

I have an idea! Let's just hand out runes OR ask runescape for some advice!
Monster drops sound like a horrid idea.
F*cking realism sounds like a great idea.
What about runes that only come from the source. If a god of trees had a magical tree rune, why the hell not place it in a tree with a one in 500 chance of it popping out when some lumberjack chops it down? Or mabey the rune of rock or something being a very rare Mining find?
What if you got the rune as an item, then you had the /option/ to place it in your magical inventory.
Eh? Eh?

Sounds like we have some really good ideas here and it seems to be the consensus that at least some basic magic be available to anyone.
I am a little concerned where this topic is going though, as this is a 'Newbie Forum', how about if we continue this discussion in the Player's forum? There is already a sticky for Magic Discussions.
Thanks

Teaching should be available for those who want to be taught. The Gaurdian system was the best in my opinion. Why not have both? Let those who want to learn and not want to take a journey across the island learn from teachers. Let those who dont want to rely on other people search for the gaurdians to learn, let them sacrifice things of value instead of having to become someones friend in order to learn.
Even if you do know a rune can you use the teaching system to have someone help you learn the rune better, at the expence of thier own skill?
My 2 cents, though id like to hear athians.

Letting the runes be dropped by monsters is creapy shit, because only warriors would get the runes then

and in a tree? I mean what shell a lumberjack do with a rune hello

What about a combo between Teaching, Gaurdians, and Random findings?

Who said mages needed to be only magical?
I can see a mage farming or brewing potions to gain some income.

A mage who brews potions must be kind of a superman/girl, because you need blooming high skills in alchemy for doing such a thing

I don't think a normal mage (especially a wannabe) is able to do that, because even some of the good druids do hard with that.

Still leaves farming, sewing, herb lore (Selling certain plants to NPCs..), and on.
I could easily make a mage that gains about 5-10 silvers a day.

I don't know about 10 but 5 isn't too far of an imagination stretch.

i made 2 silvers off of ONE load of leather shoes. and came up with 6 coppers at the end of the day
a mage will have to have a decent income in order to buy mana potions
i remember with my old mage id go through like...10-20 mana potions a day and (thats when there was no fighting and i was just training) would get mana potions in bulk between 50-100 potions.

The learning thing is being overworked. At the moment, you must powergame hell out of your butt to be able to teach at all, and then powergame on because teaching reduces your skills again.
Our guys are working on that, so soon, teaching may be possible.
Mana potions won't help much with training.
