Languages

Post by Val De Gausse »

Ok this is a question about th e game. Is the language system working. I mean what does it do? Since mine says I am fluent in elf language, but none of the others, when I hear orcs say stuff is that translated to what i "Hear"? I was just curious.

I don't think the languages are implemented yet... if it is, I haven't seen any difference...

In my opinion the learning of the other peoples' languages will be very funny. But on the other hand there will be a lot of confusion at the beginning and I think it will be very strange if you can't talk to your own husband/wife or to some of your friends...
"Oh Darling, you asked me to wash the dishes? I'm sorry but I really couldn't understand your terrible human dialect..."

I think the proplem of the system will be that you can still understand the "#me" so you can only do "#me says:xyz" i think there must be a solution if the system is on.

Well tahts why we rolplay, i think most poeple would adhere to those rules,
i think you could start off with comm/on and your native language, you can switc/h between the languages you've /mastered to tal/k to /your races, and to/learn m/orelanuguages you ahve to buy or find a dictionary for each letter of the lagnuage, so you could buy elf A.You can understand the letters youve bought but you cant speak the language till you ahve them all.

I think certain races should have sub languages, like halflings have had some interaction with humans, so they should have some skill. Same with elves, they should also have some knowlage of the human language, and perhaps other languages from their vast experiences having lived so long. This could always be determined by your intelligence.

Even with the risk of sounding repetative: Couldn't this simply be roleplayed? ;)

Of course people could really make up their own languages, and you would litterally have to learn them, which would be fun since it would bridge the gap between german/english players. However Caranthir, the gm's apparently planned it to be an in-game skill.

I like Caranthir Idea, Except it should be a certain language for each race. There can't be 5 different elf languages. And they should be simple and agreed upon by all the members of the race, if they participate.

I don't think Caranthir meant to actually speak in certain languages.
It would be a little bit too hard to force all players of elves to learn a language. Roleplaying would rather mean to mark sentences as spoken in certain languages, or like that.

Well, naturally Devoted players could establish 'real' languages if they'd want to. This would be good for the reasons that Grobul already stated.

Some players have already tried this to little or no success, however if you get an amount of people to use it, you can have a language others cannot understand and you can talk behind their back, right infront of them!

Yep. I remember my attempt at creating the lizardman language Haslus, but no other lizardpeople besides me spoke it, because they found the grammer format too tough.

So what I do is walk up to a fellow lizardman, type #me speaks in a language with many hisses, then whisper the translation. Much easier.

Well im going to have a human charecter so mine doesnt really matter, however it would be confusing for everyone to come up with there own langwadge. I guess someone could put out an on-line dictionary, but that would take FOREVER to do. Unless its in game im not really sure there would be a feaseable way to come up with langwages for everyone. I could however see a mix between in game and live translations where elf charecter text came up as elf and other players (besides elves) had to translate it.
