Drought? What drought? A rant from the heart.
To all game players, except a hand full:
Sorry to interrupt your tailoring, auctions or whatever the heck it is you occupy your time with these days, but I'd like to draw your attention to the drought. It's a big thing which is affecting the entire island. People, and that includes women and children (go on, use your imagination, it's what it's there for), are starving. Yes there is meat, but no fruit, grain or fish. Your characters LIVES, and that of any family or friends they may have, are at risk!!
You business characters have no excuse either. Without raw materials you will go out of business. Your stocks will not last forever, and that includes tailors, if we are having problems then the pigs and sheep would not last long. What little money you manage to make will be being spent on the last few rotten apples.
Talking of rotten apples (should get extra points for the excellent link) I know some of you are RP'ing evil characters and that's fine but try to do it in a way that at least forwards what's going on. Grabbing a seedling and lobbing it onto the island is pointless. Yes I know people do pointless stuff in the real world but you and I both know how weak an excuse that is. If you can think of an original evil RP then great. If you just want to spend five minutes ruining hours of RP for nothing then sod you.
I would like the Gods to curse all who take the seedlings with reducing skills until the seedlings are returned. The skills would only stop reducing on return of the seedlings and not be returned to their former levels. I know this may seem harsh to those who lobbed the seedlings onto the island, but I think I summed up my feelings on that in the last sentence of the previous paragraph. I would also like to see all creatures other than characters die or leave the island till the drought is over. Perhaps then people might look around and go "ohhh a drought. Now I get it." I know I'm not going to get any of what I would like but then sh1t happens I'm told.
Rant over.

Nice Rant. I agree, even though forget to role play the extreme heat sometimes, My char. has stop the only job he was ever good at Fishing and barely ever fights now. He's depot ran out of food a few weeks ago and since then he's been buming food form athian and other mages or summoning one or too meals a day (orl kah).
Ever time he walks by the shrine and see the cut tree's he's sicken at what people do for money, fame, or what ever sick reason they doom the other of the island. When he see people runing around sale a huge amount of items all the time he wonders if the only thing they did before the drought was work, etc. etc......Ok I'm done now

Paul the purpose of the post was, I think, summed up by the use of the word "Rant". I also hoped to nudge people into remembering that the drought is still on going and most people should be suffering by now.
I'm not sure how you thought the post was IC! It's all OOC as far as I can tell. Hence the use of the words "Game players", "Characters", "RP" (though not a word I admit) and last and probably least "Sh1t". Sorry if this confused you, I'll try to make it clearer next time.

But this is not relevant to anything out of character!! As far as I know, besides the drought in the midwest, there are no major droughts affecting Illarion players, but I could be wrong. Please, seperate OOC and IC, because I found this post annoying. You can not sway Paul's opinions by trying to change it OOC.
I take it you are just baiting me and thats fine, I'm not doing a lot at the moment.
It is relevant to a lot of game players because their characters are not acting like there is a major drought going on.
I began the rant with "To all game players, except a hand full: " so that most people would see it was addressed to the players behind the characters. There is a drought in game and it affects all characters on the island, and so, by association, the game player is affected in that his character should be played to that effect.
I am not sure what else I could of done so this post did not annoy you. I shall try to keep further posts as simple as possible so you can follow the thread.

I think the reason people are ignoring the drought is that it has run it's course. It's damned near impossible to figure it out and people are getting tired of butting their heads against the brick wall. So they just give up and go on with other things until it is over.
I think a lot of people agree that it has gone on for too long now. If there is a solution that a character needs to figure out then whoever is running the thing needs to drop a few more clues or hints because everyone is tired of trying to figure it out. If there is no solution and it is just some plot that needs to run it's course than why should the characters do anything at all if there is nothing they can do to stop it?

There are a few people who have great fun taking the seedlings...
And a few people try to spend their time protecting the seedlings and find a solution to the problem...
But whats really strange is that most of the people seem to have fun hunting mumies, skeletons, training with scorpions, all days, weeks, years perhaps ?!?
As long as 90% of the players dont really care about a solution there will not be any solution, thats the real problem of this island.
I know this is a IC problem, but is it really so difficult to organize a permanent guard at the seedlings?
Im new here so perhaps I didnt get some aspects of this world...

the one who takes the seedlings dont seems to have a real live...
Its absolutely clear that most of us have other things to do than playing illarion all the time but we have players all over the world, and many important guilds ...with a good organisation between all the inhabitants of illarion who want this draught to end it must be possible to at least minimize the posibillity of loosing the seedlings.

Perhaps, people need some suggestions for how a character might react in a drought.
In a drought as harsh as the one the people of Illarion are experiencing now, malnutrion, dysentery, and death are wide-spread.
Symptoms of Malnutrion:
Weight loss
fluid retention (swelling of feet and ankles)
Anemia,
Osteoporosis (bones are easily broken),
Easy bruising and excessive bleeding,
Nerve damage: poor balance, muscle weakness, and numbness and tingling in the arms and legs.
Infertility: Untreated sprue can lead to infertility in women, lack of menses (menstruation), spontaneous abortions and low birth weight infants.
Muscle weakness: severe muscle weakness, muscle cramps, and numbness or tingling sensations in the arms and legs.
Symptoms of Dysentery
Abdominal pain
Tenesmus
Intestine inflammation
Colon inflammation
Nausea
Vomiting
Abdominal cramping
Fever

Come to think of it, the "mage must find a druid/druid must find mage" idea works very well. Druids lack food, mages lack potions, there can be a wonderful roleplaying link that they must have. And, this would give people motivation to solve this problem once and for all.
It's likely that the moderators don't necessarily have a set solution or discovery to work with, but rather, they're waiting for the players to react in a realistic and interesting manner; a prayer, or something.

I was a bit abrupt in my last posting, and may be in this one too, because I have classes to attend...
I was thinking a hunger system that can make you starve to death could be considered. Druids would need the mages for food, and mages would need the druids to make potions. Sort of a "Will work for food" idea. This is a drought...people suffer a famine.
If you're starving, your health can decrease as if you were sitting in two weak flames. Slowly, but surely. (From my understanding, strawberries don't have that great of an effect.)

This idea or variations have been proposed like stamina bars and such, and if you have an idea post in the proposals forum, but not this one since it has been addressed many times and contemplated. The contemperary stamina/hunger system is a simpler version of what is to come I beleive. They are working on a new fighting system, debugging the knockout system, so forth and so on. Just be patient.
