Powergaming Newbie's

Post by Faramier »

Is it just me or is the new influx of players strangely experienced? I saw one mage casting a 4 by 6 rectangle of flames and then showing off how good he was with ice bolt. Then another player said how he could kill skeletons and another how he wanted to go into the demon cave.

Apart from the mage who is obviously powergaming, theese where all 48*** people. I couldnt kill skeletons that early on, and I hadnt even heard of the demon cave.

Has anyone else noticed this, or any other suspicious circumstances.

say they want to go to the demon cave doesnt mean they are powergameing, maybe he over heard someone talking about it? or read it on the boards.

but the others might be powegameing, what do you do to punish them though? they just came to the game and dont really know how it works, maybe something like 2 hours of jail time

I have went into the Demon Caves and I have only been here for 1 week and 3 days or something like that. I even ran through the castle ((sorry I cant remember the name)). Of course I went in there with Salathe who can fight demons. So going into the Demon caves doesnt mean your going to kill demons it just means your going to check it out and have some fun running around hoping not to be killed((I was in the castle))

Just a side note: Just because players have "low numbers" and good skills doesn't necessarily mean they have powergamed.

Remember, powergaming=Increasing skills without Rp reason. Working continually on a skill with a Rp reason isn't powergaming it is roleplaying.

First of all I want to say, that I don t think it would be fair to punish any people for possibly-powergaming in the past, but without powergaming its not possible to become able to fight a deamon (or even stand his attacks with 2 shields) when your char is 48***. I trained quite a lot when I started playing, but it took me about a month to fight deamons, and this happened before the skill system was changed, so in my view an 48*** fighter can t fight a deamon without having powergamed...

@Elaralith: You are right, but there are only very few players who rp in a way that they aren t powergaming when they train a lot, mostely mages often "train" for hours without saying a word and just clicking on the map.

Well, I must say, I have seen many numbers higher than me that are far better fighters and casters, and that really does upset me a bit, simply because I have worked my butt off within the limits of my character to train and made a point not to powergame, and then see a person who has been here a week walk around like arnold swartzenager.....starting to make me feel like "if they dont follow the rules, then why should I?" but of course, im not that bad. But everyone does need to face the facts....Most people in the game do not wish RP a weak person...most of them are "strong" characters. Unfortunatly most of them think that way....also, if their high number and great power bothers you, think of it as they were skilled before they came to the island.

Not sure but it seems like skill is easier to gain, I REALLY REALLY WISH people got tired while fighting, this is a little upsetting as digging I think is somewhat easier than constantly fighting two or three mummies at a time.

No, that wouldnt be a good idea, New people would be killed by monsters not knowing why, then there would be town attacks, people might be tired, they would all die, it wouldnt do very much

And just because someone has a higher number, and is better means nothing, and getting mad over it is pointless

.....fooser it says you are tired and hungry after a WHILE of digging, herb loring, smithing, but you can still perform these actions until the point where you are exasted and you must rust. I think after killing about 20 mummies a person with fair constitution would be tired (depending on their skill). Maybe it could be dependant on your swings as well, and heavier weapons give more fatigue, depending on two handed or one. Like a firesword with a shield and a two handed sword would have about the same fatigue, maybe the two hander a some less. I think it makes perfect sense that people would die when they are tired and hungry.

Well, someone could come back from the mummies or skeletons, then a town invasion occurs, and they get run over, sounds messy

Yeah? This sounds completely logical to me. Fighting does wear you out, probably even faster than normal working.

I totally support Gro'bul. Fooser...people may die during the town invasion? Well holy moly, we better just make everyone invincible then!!! come one, that was sooooo unintelligent...A town attack is...A TOWN ATTACK....the monsters are not coming in for tea and cookies, they are coming in to kill you and eat your flesh. I loved the rotworm attack because the town had to actually fight hard, and many died...as opposed to every other town attack when you hear "skeletons are attacking" and one tough person goes and kills them allso...umm...YEAH!...lol, my ranting got me lost :P

I didnt say invincible, but you should at least give them a chance....and everyone keeps wanting more restrictions "Restrict that, make this a skill blah", I have a better idea, lets just make Illarion a turn-based game where we can do 3 actions a day and just walk around the rest of the time

fooser, what will ya say when the armors and weapons will have the ffect to wear out while fighting? that could be, and iam sure it will be because it will be a good thing for the game.

see, ya get 6 (or seven?) messages when ya getting exhauste while work, iam sure peoples who fight a mummie will be able to kill one in 6 or 7 hits, right? but he could carry some meals too, so he were able to eat something, kill the mummies and walk after THAT into town.

Yeah, "ewwww" is right, and there is nothing wrong with wearing out armor and weapons....the problem is that smiths will be too tired to make new ones heh

Ya know what, I love the eating idea..it discourages the powergamers, but doesnt stop them completely, but still helps. Sure it is annoying to dig some and get hungry, but I get all mad and cranky when im playing illarion on the computer and I really have to go to the bathroom, or my doorbell rings, or my cell phone rings, or i get hungry. Just be glad you dont get a message like "A bird poops in your eye and you can no longer work the rest of the day" or like half the screen goes black...hehehe...

They dont have to be a hero and protect the town. People should try running if some big demon kind of thing comes towards you.

They do get warnings...all the time I get a universal message "You hear the sound of war drums in the distance"
shoot, the last skeleton attack gave me a message of "Skeletons attack now!"
How much more of a warning do they need.... like should all the monster come up and ask everyone if they are ready before they attack? :P

Oh yeah I want GM's to control monster(s) and personally come up to me and ask me if I want to protect the town, If I say yes, then they can fully warn me, with exact times, dates, and size of the attack force

Heh, the skeleton attack spawned ontop of me, it was a fair attack, it would of worked better if I hadnt been there, then they would have got into town and surprised people.

The point still remains, this new "group" of players as in the majority of the new ones, are powergaming, its just this new group, what went wrong and how do we fix it?

If you encounter players obvisouly powergaming,
e.g.:

- Casting repeatingly Spells on each other.
- Combat Training Characters without Roleplay-Elements
- "Hit me to raise my Parry" - Talkings
- ect.

than just send us an eMail at violations@illarion.org and we try to handle the matter.

The town gets attacked?! Neat!... Well, neat, but kind of scary too...
Would training so you can protect yourself be a valid reason to go out and increase your fighting skill? It technically would be in character to train like that if your character is afraid of being attacked unprepared.... am I right? >.>

Of course, with my character's strength, I would probibly have to find someone to come with me so they can watch my back.

*Pictures Epton the character trying to hire a self-defense trainer.*

I think thats a good rp reason. When I was starting a character of my own, he was a peaceful farmer minding his own business. Not soon after I started planting large crops of grain and cabbage, theives came poking around and stealing my crops. My fighting skills weren't enough to hardly kill a zombie. After being stolen from several times I would go and train for a while as part of my new schedule. Eventually theives decided it wasn't worth it anymore.

ya have to differ betwen normal rp training and powergaming training. if ya fight zombies and skeletons to get better its a good training and it seems rp-like but if ya fights flies without armor or each other with needles and if ya just let hits ya from zombies without try to kill them, thats powergaming. and ya shouldn't train too long at a time.

I think if this is done without Rp reason that is powergaming but with Rp reason it is acceptable. It is just like fighters with Rp reason "dueling" to enhance their fighting skills like parrying. For mages to cast spells on each other is the "wizard's" way of training.
