The sailor was in the corner heard the Dwarfess cry and threw his dirk at Grant and sliced his arm.

The strange goo was in Grant's left eye and he couldn't see out of it. He hoped he wasn't going to lose the sight through his eye. And the gash in his arm was hurting him badly. Nevertheless he still has 1 good eye and a mighty sword with which to cut the sailor down with.
He swung downward getting the man's right leg cutting it off from just a few inches above the knee cap. Then swung right to left cutting the man in half. His intestines and stomach acids spilt over the wooden deck and some onto Anora and onto Grant's boots.
The man's face looked up at Grant's, Grant spit onto his face and cut Anora free.

Just as discusted with herself for not being alert as she was at the man, she took up her battle axe. Bringing it over her head, she swung it hard, severing the man's head from his body. She picked up the foul head, its eyes still peering sightlessly from its sockets.

"Good job, Partridge," she gruffed as she past Grant on her way out of the room carrying the head with her.

Shocked that all she said was "Good job Partridge" Grant sat down on Anora bed. He'd saved her from being taken advantage of and being killed...
Then there was his arm with the large gash in it from the last crew member. It would take near to a week to heal with potions. And his eye with the strange goo covered over it. He might go blind in his eye now... And all she said was "Good Job Partridge...." Grant dwelt on the subject for about 5 minutes before he got up and went up deck to see if anyone knew what was covered on his eye.

After the other mates were freed and the ship secured once again, one of the brothers, Peter, looked at Grant's eye. He fingered the dark brown substance and brought it to his nose and sniffed it.

"Ah, just chewin' tobacoo, I think,"

Just then, he noticed Anora coming up with the severed head. She held it up high to the men. "We don't react well to those that threat the Dahud or her crew," she said calmly. "Grant has proven himself part of this crew. If another comes forth to threaten any of us, his head shall be added to my collection." She took out a small dagger and cut a large chunk of hair before having one of the men climb the mast, hanging the gawdy thing from the pole. Shoving the chuck of hair into her pocket she marched off to find the captain.

Grant let out a sigh of relief as it was just chewing tobacco. "There now, dunk your head in a bucket of water and it'll come right on out." Peter said.

"2 more days til we reach port..." Luke said. "I can't wait to sleep on an inns bed and not this boats bunks."

Grant walked back to his own bunk and feel asleep right when he hit the covers. And the small red snake once again went under Grant's covers protecting him against any that threaten.

Carpathia, was nay to be seen on deck. His shirt tho, was drapped over the bow of the ship. He lay suspended in the scramble net, under the small carved figure head of the ship bow. Such craftmanship he thought as he gazed up studying the carved figure head, the sounds and smell of the sea calming his mood.

'Should never have taken them abord,' he said softly to the sea. 'Didnt like the look in the mans eyes... you can tell alote about a man from his eyes.' He chuckeld then thinking of his own misfortune. 'If they have "eyes",' he spoke aloud with a smile.

'aye aye' came a faint voice from above him. John tilted his head back to see a pixie hovering just out of reach, her little face a glow with a slight grin.
'You are the captain right big man?' she asked her face still a smile her voice polite.
'Aye I am, what of it' Carpathia replyed
'Yay,' she clapped as her face beamed. 'We want you to let the othe pixies go!' Her voice now was more to the point.
'We?'
She poited with a smirk abover the captain, who followed her direction with his eyes. Above him was a another pixie, male this time sturgeling to hold a dagger twice the size of the creature, the blade of which was poited down at the captains face.
'Give us the key to your cabbin door or you wont have eye let alone an aye aye,' she giggled again tho the sound was wiked
He looked at them in turn, the male pixie now tired looking and jerking up and around in his hover trying to bear the weight of the dagger.
Slowly, he put his hand into his pocket and pulled out a key whcih he held out above him. The female rushed forward in flight snatching the key and flying up out of reach.
'Lets go,' she squeeled with delight. The male slew to the side and dropped the dagger before shooting strate up, not ready for the sudden weight loss, before they both flew up and over the deck.

Carpathia shook his head and closed his eyes. How they going to open the cages he suddenly grinned as he reached up for the small keys around his neck.

Luke and Brodie both hadn't gone to sleep like most the rest of the crew. They were in the diner eating left-over bread and drinking wine. It was near to 2 a.m. When they decided to hit the sack.

"I aam reeeady to sleeep." Luke slured he clearly had a little to much to sleep.

"Aye laddie, meh too." Brodie said completely sober though he had more to drink out of the two.

They made their way to the crew's bed when they heard a buzzing of wings, like big bees, and it was coming from the Captain's room.

"'Ear that?" Brodie asked.

"Aye..." Luke said a little bit more sober.

The two of them went to the captain's door and pushed it open just enough to see. They saw two pixies flying around, one carrying a key the other trying in vain to pull open the cages with pixies in them.

"The key doesn't fit!" one of the pixies said.

"The Captain tricked us!" the other said.

"Back to the captain!" the first said.

"Aye aye" the other replied.

The two pixies flew through the small crack which Brodie and Luke were peeking through, they flew so fast they didn't even see the two men. Luke and Brodie both went off in pursuit, Luke stumbling over his own feet in the process.

The same night the pixies were trying to get free was the night when the army of snakes attacked the Capital of the Kingdom, Herion. They slithered through the sewers.
Now, Highlander Elves are known for summoning powerful creatures, and for transforming average animals into monsters 10 times their average strength. They changed all the rats in the sewer into giant monsters the size of dogs.
The rats attacked the snakes as they we're nearing the sewer under the clock tower. The two forces fought bitterly. Both evenly matched, although most of the snakes were larger then the rats, nearly 10 feet long, the rats outnumbed the snakes greatly.
Finally the rats retreated, defeated, most of them dead. The snakes moved on, only 37 left now, all the largest of the lot, at least 15 feet long. Their goal was to get into the clock tower, that was where the queen was being held prisoner. Once under the clock tower they would slither up into and save the queen, that was the mission Drey Joi gave them, they would complete if it killed them.
They got to the end of the sewers. The last room was a octagon shape, most of the walls covered in shadows. In the middle of the room was a ladder leading up to the Clock Tower. They just needed to get up the ladder, but there was a shadow between them and the ladder. A lone figure. Massive.
It was 12 feet tall. It's skin black and as hard as iron. It had a pair of yellow eyes. It's muscles on it's hind legs and arms huge. It looked like a wolf standing up, only its face was that of lizard. It's teeth razor sharp. Its wings as hard as its skin. And it's tail 8 feel long. Its razor sharp claws would cut through stone. It was a being of another world and time. It was called a Wolfstake.
It gleamed its yellow teeth in what looked like a smile and attacked the group of snakes. The Wolfstake roared and the snakes hissed. They bit into the Wolfstake's skin but their venom had no effect on it. It was unstoppable. It's claws cut them in half.
They tried coiling themselves around it in an attempt to suffocate it to no effect. It simply flexed and they had to stop. They had no chance, and all of them were slaughtered...

Images flooded through his dream. The town destroyed. The once unbroken streets now filled with cracks and breaks. The once green and beautiful City's park now withered and brown. His brother hanging from a dead tree. His father's body burned in the city's square. His sister being ravaged over and over by the Highland Elf Prince. His mother chained to the walls at the top of the Clock Tower.
The images were strong and he kept moving in bed trying to escape from the images but he could not. They haunted him at every corner. He turned another corner in his mind a new image came, one he had not seen before. A creature born from nightmare. Tall and masculine. It's wing expanded and it's tail whipping at him. He closed in all around him. And he stood alone to face it. He alone could fight it to save his sister and his mother.
He swung his sword at it, it's black body was split in half. But it came back together. Every body part he cut off would grow back from the infinite blackness that was it's skin. It's claws came down on him and he was awake.
Sweat beaded off Grant's face. His icy blue eyes searching the room around him adjusting to the darkness. 'It was all a dream' he thought. Though he knew deep down inside it wasn't a dream but a vision. It was real, all of it. And he would have to stop it all...

The pixies fluttered over Carpathia.

"Wheres the keys for the cages!" one asked angrily.

"Don't want to lose your eye aye aye!" the other joked.

"Where keys Captain!" the first asked.

Reluctantly Carpathia took the necklace of keys off from his neck and threw them back over his head onto the deck. The fairies darted for them and it took both of them to left it up.

"What do we do?" Brodie asked Luke.

"I guesh we could stop 'em..." Luke slurred.

"Right... lets chase 'em off." Brodie said.

Luke nodded and they both stood up tall and ran at the fairies screaming at the top of their lungs. It was a comical scene to say the least and it didn't scare the fairies off at all.

"What they doing?" the second fairy asked the first.

"Are they possessed?" The first asked.

"Lets free friends and leave, these people crazy."

Brodie ran up to the fairies as they slowly flew down the stairs, he was hollering at the top of his lungs.

"It didn't work.." Brodie said.

"Yesh it didn't... We should get the cap'n huh?" Luke asked.

"Oh ya!" Brodie said.

They both pulled the captain back on board. As the captain hit the deck the other fairies flew out from the stairway and out into the sky. The last they saw of them...

The next day brought loads of sunshine down onto tha Dahud crew. It felt good to sit out in the sun. They rested up and their wound slowly healed. Grissel was 100 percent again and Grant's cut in his arm was almost gone.
They worked of course that day, but it didn't seem as bad. They were happy because of their riches and they were glad to almost be on land. Near midday they saw the mainland. The captain estimated they would be at the port city by morning tomorrow.
And he was right. The next day they stepped off the ship loaded with gold. Grant had given his share of booty away, he kept what he brought with him when he boarded.
They all went to an inn and ate breakfast together. It was a warm breakfast and was much better then the watery tasting food they were used to.
Grant had told them he was going to leave the following morning after he had recruited all he could from this town. Grissel said he could go with Grant as he felt he owed Grant his life when he was injured in the raid. Brodie and Luke were both tired of the Dahud and thought that it would be an adventure to go with Grant and both joined.
"Would you guys want to come as well?" Grant asked Carpathia, Anora, Chris and Peter. "I promise, lots of gold."

The whole of the town was dressed in blue fishermen garb. They all had packs on their backs and a fishing pole near them. They were all peaceful fishermen. The children ran through the small town of Brenford not knowing how close danger was. If the Highlanders wanted to they could swing south and destroy this town to further their kingdom's growth.
Grant was trying to recruit as many of the fishermen as he could. But they didn't all believe he was actually Grant Herion their prince. And he really had no proof that he was. Except for the amulet around his neck with the kingdoms emblem (two dragon head's facing each other). But that wouldn't prove it completly.

"Listen townfolk of Brenford, your town is in danger! The whole kingdom is in danger! The Highlanders from the hills up north have invaded and captures our capital city! We need your help to push them back to the hills where they belong!" Grant cried.

"What makes you think we could possibly defeat those Highlanders? We don't got any weapons." a townsperson said.

"We can find weapons." Grant said, and the crowd around him was growing.

"What about numbers? Even if we all went with you we wouldn't be enough would we?" another asked.

"Well we must try! Do you really want to be a coward afraid to fight for your kingdom? If we unite know we have a chance of defeating them. If we don't, we flee and lose our land, our homes, our lives. Now please, I ask a your prince to join me and help me defeat this foriegn danger."

"How do we know you are who you say you are?" they asked.

"You just have to believe me, what would I have to gain if I was lieing, besides a beating?"

The crowd was silent all of them deciding what to do. Then one broke out of the crowd, he ran quickly, faster then Grant could react with. It was an assasin, Grant knew that in half a second. But he couldn't reach his sword quick enough. The assasin had his dirk in hand and stabbed at Grant, but then his body went limp and he was dead when he hit the ground. An arrow sticking from his back.
A Herion soldier with his bow had taken the assasin down. The soldier was rough looking. He had a scare on his cheek and on his right hand's palm. He had a black beard and towered above most men. Grant recognized him immediately as Commander Reynold.

"Welcome back Grant." Reynold said his voice strong as iron.

"Julieus!" Grant said happily calling the man by his first name.

"It has been a long time, too long." Reynold said.

"Yes it has, I seek your council. We must figure out how to defeat the Highlanders." Grant said. "But first I must finish recruiting these townfolk, if any are to join us anyways."

"Consider it done my prince." Reynold said and 10 other soldiers came out of the crowd and went about looking for volunteers.

The two men walked back into the inn and talked of numbers and strategy.

They sat in a corner of the inn. It was nearing midday and the sun was beaming down on the small town. Two men first talked of each other before the Highlanders invaded. Then they started talking of what to do...

"We have 426 footsoldiers and 25 men on horses. Yes, it is only a fourth of what our strength used to be. About 700 men died when they first came. The rest died when we tried to take the city back. We couldn't get past our own walls, fairly ironic. The bulk of our horse riders died when they had to face the Highlander's horse riders. Didn't have a chance. The 25 that our left are the best we ever had, know their horses and their horses know them." Reynold said.

"What about the other Commanders? Did they die?" Grant asked.

"Yes, Terry and Junt died in the invasion. Rake died in the attempt to take it back. Leaving me in charge." Reynold said grimly.

"Well, you always were the one at the top anyways, the others always looked to you for guidance." Grant encouraged.

"Yes, well, this is our last stronghold. It doesn't have many fortifications, the wooden gates won't stop the Highlanders or their pets. But we must stop them here or else we are doomed." Reynold said.

"Pets?" Grant asked.

"Oh yes, the Highlander's army is really that strong, but their magic is incredible. We estimate their army's strength at 600. But they have these monsters, dogs originally, but magic put into them that tranformed their figure and their mind set. They triple maybe quadruple the strength of the animal they put magic into. We think they use just dogs, but I have seen bears and cats in there as well. And those make up the bulk of the Highlander's strength."

"How do you propose we defeat them?" Grant asked.

"Well, I am thinking a crazy idea, but an idea nevertheless. If the Highlanders had this strength all the time why are they just now using it?" Reynold asked Grant who had a "I have no clue" face on. "The reason they invade now and not before is because they just got new summoner. And I also believe that the soldiers and maybe all the Highlanders have been corrupted by the magic, they seem more aggresive, and stronger then they ever were before. Like animals really. They seemed mindless in the battles we fought them in."

"So you think when we kill the summoner they'll leave?" Grant asked doubtfully.

"Yes, that is what I believe, and it is the best we got." Reynold said.

"So where is the summoner?" Grant asked.

"I am guessing the castle, your old house." Reynold said. "I am also guessing he has that place protected with some of his stronger monsters."

"Hm. Now, I have a feeling you have a plan to go on the offensive." Grant said.

"Yes I do, but it matters what happens. You see at this moment the Highlanders are coming to this town. We are going to be trying a new strategy. We will have 300 men in three lines, all 100 men long. They will be armed with 6 foot spears. I think it will be a success. The enemy won't be able to get to our men as long as they have the spears up. The 300 men will be outside the town wall facing the monsters that the Highlander's throw at them.
Now I know that they won't be able to hold their lines for the whole battle and that is when the rest of the 126 men come in. The 126 men will act as archers and cover the 300 men as they fall back for cover in the town. Then it is regular defense and if it holds and we manage to defeat the enemy on the battle field today, we will push them back furthur and furthur until we are at the capital." Reynold.

"Right, well, I will be with you, and some of my friends will be here as well." Grant said. "But I think we should make the town's walls stronger while we still can. And I mean make them thicker and more durable that way we can have the archers fire down on them for a longer time."

"We are currently doing that. Gather your men Grant, the enemy comes in 3 hours."

The herion soldiers in their dark blue tunics worked hard at making the town's wooden walls just a little bit stronger. The townfolk were helping as well, about 150 men and some teenagers volunteered to help defend their town, which was practically all the men and teenagers in town. Granted the volunteers didn't have weapons, mainly just long knives and maybe a quarter staff. But beyond that they had no armor or shields.
Grant talked with his friends...

"I am sorry that you got caught up in this..." Grant said. "But I couldn't help it, now, the women and children are staying in Brenford's Inn. You can stay there while the battle rages."

"Patridge, you think for a second I'd sit in a Inn during a fight like a mouse?" Anora said. "You got another thing comin' if you do. I'll fight."

"We'll help out to Grant. I know we can't use the cannon during the battle as it would take to long... But we can use our crossbows." Peter said. "We'll definetly help you."

"Well patridge, you sure did a good job of getting us trapped in this port town... Knew we should of gone up north... Well, doesn't make a difference now. I'll stand and fight, for at least this battle. I am not sure about the rest, I don't think there is enough gold in the world that would make we fight in a war..." Carpathia said then gave Grant a nod. He walked off with Peter and Chris, they would fight with him in the battle.

Grant and Anora walked over to where Grissel, Luke and Brodie stood. The five talked about the battle and their plans, they would all stick close to Grant as they thought him to be a target of any assasin that may sneak up behind him in the battle. Then they heard howls.
Soldiers ran up and down the near deserted streets.

Reynold saw the approaching Highlander army coming and quickly ordered the 300 men to out side the town's wall. The men stood bravely against near to 2500 beasts plus 200 Highlanders.
Then the Herion soldiers beat their spears on the ground as one. 1 solid beat heard for thousands of feet away. And they chanted the war cry of the kingdom: "Herion! Herion! Herion!" The battle for Brenford began!

The 300 Herion soldiers stood bravely still as the Highland Beasts raced towards them unorganized and crazied.

"Raise your spears!" Reynold's yelled, he was on his horse running up and down the lines of men.

The soldiers raised their spears and got ready for the beasts. They beasts howled in fury and attacked, they leapt at the soldiers and were impaled by the spears. They kept coming though, they only saw the soldiers and cared not for the spears.
The new strategy was working well. Very well infact, great numbers of the beasts were falling while the Herion soldier's death were kept at a minimum. But soon the beasts simply forced the soldier's lines to faulter, there was to many of the Highland beasts and to little spears. And the lines broke.
The soldiers withdrew their broadswords and short swords and fought the beasts. But now many soldiers were falling and Reynold saw this. He ordered his men to retreat back to behind Brenford's walls.
Grant was there along with his friends at the gate. The large wooden gate was craned up slowly. Finally it was high enough for soldiers to get through, they ran back. Some beasts ran past while the gate was up but they were quickly killed by the swords of all the men around the gate.
In a short time all the soldiers were back inside the town's gates. But the beasts were still around and very numerous. They tried to jump up the low 10 foot wooden walls. But the soldiers now lined the walls and were pushing and hacking them back down. The defenses were holding and the beginning of the battle looked good for the Herion army...

The Highland beasts sieged the soldiers in Brenford. Their black hides littered the grassland surrounding the walls. The Highlanders on their horses watched from a safe distance as their pets killed and were killed.
The beasts were the ones dieing the most, they seemed unaware of the javalins and arrows that rained down on them. Occasionally they would jump high enough to bite a poor soldier and pull him down with it, but that didn't happen often.
The siege seemed to be failing, the beast's lines were being thinned out. And the Highlanders saw this and knew they needed something stronger to fight the Herion soldiers. And they did. A Highland elf dressed in black robes raised his hands, clouds materialized out of nowhere, and lightning struck the ground 100 feet in front of him. And out of the lightning stood a monster born out of nightmare.
It looked insectoid. With 8 green slimy legs, two pincers and a stinger. It had 4 eyes and it's green skin was thick and its muscles were strong. It was 20 feet in length and it's body was in 3 parts, head, chest, abdomin.

"What the hell is that!?" Grant said.

"A monster... One we can't beat... I'm going to have my men fall back to the town square... Maybe we can take it down if we are all together...." Reynold said. "All men fall back to the square!"

The soldiers leapt off the wall and ran back to the square. They saw the monster and instantly feared it and it's strength. All of them ran, all but the Duhad crew. They gathered infront of the wooden gate of the wall, waiting for the monster to come....

"Listen, we can take it down together, the Herion soldiers don't have the same experience and skills we have. Chris and Peter keep your crossbow's firing, always have a steady fire on it. Grissel, use your spear to strike at it from a safe distance, but watch it's stinger. Brodie and Anora, use your axes when it isn't paying attention to you, you both have to get very close to hit it and it will take longer then with a sword. Luke, wait for me to strike first, then you, then Carpathia..." Grant said gripping his broadsword tightly, it glimmered slightly.

They could hear the yelps and cries of the Highland beasts as the insectoid walked over them and on them. They seemed to fear it. They heard the way it walked, slow but steady. Then it hit the wall's gate, it didn't climb over, it just walked through as if it were paper.
The whole crew was stunned, frozen with instant fear, perhaps it was the magic working, perhaps it wasn't, but it turned all their stomachs into ice. All save Luke, who charged the insectoid with his broad sword. He ran straight at the monsters face hacking at it, cutting it slightly, then jump to it's right side and swinging his sword at one of it's 8 legs. He didn't cut it off, but did make a large gash in it.
But the insectoid barely felt it, the magic flowing through it dulled the pain. Peter and Chris fired their crossbows at the insectoid's eyes, missing, but the bolts went deep into it's skin. Then the stinger whipped down at Luke, but with quick reflexes raised his sword just into them block off the attack, then he leapt out of it's range. Grissel struck at it's side with his spear, but the stinger came faster then he could ward it off. The stinger went into his body, and sent him flying, he hit the wooden wall barely alive. Carpathia and Grant leapt at it next.
It's pincers tried to cut them in half, but they blocked with their swords. Brodie and Anora both waited for the right time to strike, circling the insectoid.
Luke leapt up upon the monster's back and began to hack at it, the insectoid whipped it's stinger down on Luke, who wasn't ready. The stinger went into Luke's left shoulder, it went deep and the stinger lifted Luke up into the air. Poison ran into his veins, strong poison, it threw him away and he hit the ground dead.
Brodie roared with anger and swung his heavy axe into the insectoid's legs, severing one and nearly going through another. But his axe was stuck, he withdrew a hatchet and dove under the insectoid hacking at it's under belly.
Anora threw one of her hatchet's at the insectoid's stinger then swung her axe downward into it's abdomin. Her axe went deep and the insectoid made a high pitched squel, they assumed was a cry of pain.
It's stinger swung down at Anora barely missing her, she leapt back. Then it began to stomp it's feet in an attempt to crush Brodie under it. But the dwarf rolled out from under the insectoid and into safety. Then it charged Grant and Carpathia who were still fighting the pincers. Both the men were hit aside by the pincers and the insectoid ran toward Peter and Chris. Peter shot a bolt into one of it's eyes, but that was his last, the insectoid's pincer's came around his body and severed him into many peices. Chris yelled in anger, but he was stopped by the stinger that went into his belly and he too was dead.
The Duhad crew was in trouble...

The 4 remaining crew members of the Duhad were scattered. Brodie had only his hatchet, his axe was in one of the insectoid's legs. Even missing a leg, another badly wounded and it's abdomin slashed the insectoid seemed not to feel any pain.
But Grant knew if the men of Herion faced this monster they would freeze and die, and that was why he must defeat it. So he gripped his broad sword tightly and stepped infront of the insectoid. He bravely faced it, it's pincers came at him but he parried both and cut one deeply. Then the stinger came at him, but his sword blocked it, it came again and again he hit it away. Then both pincers and stinger's came at him and he parried all of them, though he was in the defense position now and not offensive.
But he was keeping the insectoid's attention long enough for Carpathia to strike. His sword was razor sharp and he cut deeply at the base of the stinger, nearly severing it, but not quite. But it was now useless, the insectoid could not move it. Anora, Brodie and Carpathia all attacked at the insectoid's back with Grant kept the pincers from strikeing them.
They cut deep into the monsters green skin. Hacking at it with axes and swords. The monster screamed out in pain. Anora hacked off a pincer, then the other and the insectoid was useless.
They killed the monster and it fell to the ground with a loud thud. But the beasts that feared the insectoid saw it fall down, and quickly lose their fear knowing they outnumbered the enemy greatly and attacked the 4 members of the Duhad.
They gave ground quickly, falling back to the town square where the Herion soldiers waited. All the while hacking the beasts. Then they reached the square and saw the soldiers with bows, instantly all of them hit the ground and heard arrows fly over their head. The soldiers were firing at the beasts, careful not to hit their prince or his friends.
The Duhad crew crawled quickly to safety, but the beasts were racing at them, trying to kill those that killed the Great Insectoid. Anora and Carpathia rolled to the Herion lines but Brodie and Grant crawled quickly and soon they were behind the soldiers and safe for the moment.

"Welcome back." Reynold said atop his mighty steed. "I thought you would try to fight that monster, just like your brother. But tell me not of it now, we must defeat these beasts, come Grant, join me on horse, you and your friends, I have more then enough horses, join me and the horse riders and lead the assult against the beasts."

Grant and his friends all got atop their horses, Anora seemed the most uncomfortable of them all on the horse. But she didn't say anything. They followed Reynold who held his sword high into the air and pointed at the beasts and yelled "Charge!". Then they were galloping, faster and faster they went, swords drawn. Grant was right behind Reynold as they hit the beast's lines.
They stabbed and hacked at the beasts atop their horses pushing deep into the beasts. Their horses stomping on the beasts when they could. The foot soldiers chanting behind them "Herion! Herion! Herion!"
The horse riders carried short swords, two of them and rode their horse without holding onto the reigns. They cut and hacked mercilessly at the beasts and the beasts fell all around. Soon they had the enemy on the run.
They chased the beasts down and killed them. A handfull of horse riders fell during the charge, but few. Then the 24 remaining men on horses charged at the 200 Highlanders and the summoner in the middle. Reynold lead them and Grant was at his side and Carpathia right behind Grant and Brodie and Anora side by side. They all rode wordlessly knowing what they would do.
The horse riders sheathed their short swords and grabbed their bows and arrows. The fired at the Highlanders and a few fell off their own horses. One of the Highlanders, the summoner Grant assumed fled away while the rest charged at the Herion horse riders.
Grant rotated his sword and got ready to meet the Highlanders face first. The two forces were 100 yards away, 80, 50, 20, 10, 5, they could smell each other's sweat, 1. The forces collided and many fell. Grant parried many swipes and knew he had gotten at least 4 men. The two forces ran through each other and began to turn around. Grant looked around him. Reynold was there, Carpathia, Anora, Brodie as well and about 14 horse riders as well. The Highlanders had lost at least 30. And now the Herion foot soldiers were catching up to their leader Reynold, and the Highlanders were trapped between to the two part of the Herion army.
The foot soldiers moved in closer shouting "herion! Herion! Herion!" Then the foot soldiers met the Highlanders and quickly they cut into the Highlanders, and Reynold lead the horse riders at the Highlander once more.
The battle was bloody and many died, but all on the Highlander's side died. The remaining foot soldiers and horse riders marched back to Brenford to rest 1 day and count the dead and heal the wounded. They were sad for their friends, but they were glad for their victory, and found their Prince Grant Herion to be a hero as their leader Commander Reynold...

Anora nursed her ale in the tavern, candidly retelling the tale of how the Giant Insect had fallen to the the unstoppable Duhad Crew. Her drunken words were mixed with tears as she praised her fallen shipmates' last heroic deeds.

She raised her mug to Grant who sat several tables away speaking quietly to the Captain of his army. "We be near even, Partridge." Following her lead, the other Duhad crew members and surviving soldiers raised their mugs in tribute to the returned Prince.

"But if you ever make me ride a wild beast of a horse again, I'll pluck ev'r last feather from ye head, do you understand Partridge?" She laughed jovially and drained her mug.

The murmering and talking among the soldiers turned from their victory to the next battle. "What is our next move, Prince Herion?" one yound man asked aloud.

Carpathia sat alone, his back to the rest of the jolly cheer in the tavern. Swiging deeply from his ale he stared at the dark stained wood of the table. The rub and slide of many a hand and tankerd, varnished with spilt ale had crafted a table top, tho dimpled and pock marked smooth and pleasing to the toutch.
He stroked his hand over it and closed his eyes, examining the feelings eminating from his finger tips. Such a simple pleasure in life he thought as he drained his tanked of ale.

Standing he made his way to the bar. The maid at his request filling and returning his drink. On walking back to his seat a roar of laughter came up folowed by a sudden movment of the humoured group. Carpathia, pushed by a strangers body fell hard, his arm catching a seat man sending his tankerd, contents and all, over the head of the unfortunate publican.

'What in the name of Ogers balls!' was all the Duhard captain heard before being hauled to his feet and punched in the face. John stagerd back a step but kept his balance. Realining his jaw with a click he sized his oppent up.
Broad shoulderd, his build large and strong. Carpathia took one look at the man, his face rough with stubble and jaw bearded before charging him. They both fell to the floor, smashing into a table before rolling off knocking people aside. The brawl had begun

"Well, the plan is too..." Grant trailed off as Carpathia and a large rough looking man began to fight. Grant ran to help Carpathia but was caught by two soldiers who said he couldn't get into a fight. Grant ordered the two soldiers to help Carpathia in the fight. He could only watch the fight from afar...

The bigger man was the first from the floor, after sending a heavy thump to the side of Carpathias head, he stood and kicked him in the chest. The Captain took the blow all be it eased by the blocking of is arms. The tavern in the short space of time had eased back from the men, cheering and shouting as the Captain rolled under the table to stand on the other side.

The big man grabbed the end of it and halled it over out of the way. The two soldiers sent by Grant to stop the fight were now firmly in the gip of a few crowds people and unable to do anything but watch. Carpathia, picking a tanked up from the floor swung his arm back before smashing the metal tankerd into the bearded face of his on comming opponent. The handle snapped on impact as to did the mans front teeth. He his eyes glazed over for a second before he shook his head and reached out for the Captain.
John, taking a stuned glance at the tanked by his feet, now indented with the shape of the mans jaw, ducked under his powerful arms and barged him into the crowd. Again they fell to the floor as people added their own kicks and digs.

Carpathia rolled over away from the man and struggeld to rise, as people in the crowd both helped him stand and pushed him down. Again the crowd parted giving the brawlers space to continue.
The big man with his back towards Crapathia strugled to rise from his crouch. Sezing the opertunity, John lunged for his head, grabing his face from behind with his hand and slaming his fist in repatedly into the other. The bearded man droped his shoulder and rolled to his side, his head tearing free of Carapthia's grip.

The big man with the aid of friends in the crowd stood again, his face now bloodied and swolen. He eyed up Crapathia with grin and steped forward with a nod. John steped in to meet him but found he could not.
'Bividan never looses you salty bastard' came a voice from behind, then a then tallon of fire seard inside his back. He fell forward right into a murderous swing from Bividan. Carpathia was pitched from his feet into the crowd. They caught him and pushed him back into the brawl.

John stagerd and spat out the metalic tasting liquid from his mouth. Bividan looked at him.
'Your finnished now sea dog' he shouted as he stepped in. Carpathia went to reply but all that came out was a gargle, this supprised him as he cought and spat again.
The big man sent a swing to the captains head, he ducked it then slammed his fist as hard as he possibe could into the big mans crotch. The crowd went silent as Bividan's eyes rolled back into his skull, he swayed forwared then back then forward again before toppeling onto his face with a thud that made the floor boars tremble.
The captain dropped to his kness and shuffeld over to Bividans head, he grabed it by his hair and pulling it back, smashed his face into the floor twice.

The crowd just stood there stunned as the captain dropped the head and pitched to his side. He went to speak but again all that came out was a gargle, he spat again and cought. He lay there on his side trying to reach for his back, he could feel the cloth of his shirt sticking to his skin as the pain pulsed with every heat beat through his lung. The effort was getting to much and his arm began to feel like it was made of lead. He let is rest at his side as he scaned the silent crowd infront of him for a friendly face.

Brodie pushed his way through the crowd with two glasses of ale in his hands. He saw most of the fight atop a chair. He reached John and handed him a glass of ale and said "Nicely done." Then drank some of his own ale.

Carpathia smiled as Brodie came into view, blood ran from the corner of his mouth over his chin.
'Nicely done,' said the pirate, his words echoing off into infinty as he handed down a tankerd of ale.
John, his vission now bluring tryed to raise his arm, it twitched but that was it. He tryed to speak but no words came from his mouth, just a throaty gargle and a choke as more blood, bright and frothey ran from his lips.

The captains eyes once bright and alive flickerd as his body lay there still. His shirt now with its fill blood leaked it onto the floor boards. Again the Captains arm twitched and slowly rose as if to reach for the out held drink. His finger inches from the tankerd closed and griped tight into a fist then slammed down with a crack onto the back Bividan neck.
With a deep gargeld sigh, the arm went lip. The life that bruned so bright in the Captains eyes, daring and youthful. Faded like a candle flame at the end of its wick.

His eyes looked on, through all and everything. As his face pale and rouged with blood, was not with out a sly grin.

Brodie looked at Carpathia seeing the life fade from the captain's eyes. He sadly watch the captain he knew die.

Grant saw and broke free of the soldiers grip, he ran to where the captain lay still. He didn't know why he felt sad, he barely knew the man and yet the two of them had been through much for the short time they knew each other. Grant put a hand on Brodie's shoulder and looked at the ground.
Captain John Carpathia fought his last fight.

They took Carpathia's body and buried it. But they could not linger in Brenford a second day. They had to push forward.
Grant rode on a black horse next to Reynold. There was an even 400 soldiers with them, they left 25 to protect the town incase of any attack, but they could spare no more.
They marched to the capital city of the Herion Kingdom, Tersis. It took them two days. Reynold knew that his men could not break through the city's walls so instead he hatched a plan. He would send Grant and his three remaining friends through the sewer way under the wall. Once they reached they got under the Clock Tower they were to climb the ladder, save the queen, exit the tower and go to the city's gate and open it.
Reynold would have sent all his men, but he knew that many evil creatures were in the sewer and it was more likely a few would slip past them instead of a whole army.

Getting into the sewer system wasn't very tricky, they had to go up the river to the city and sqeeze through the gates. Inside the sewer's was darkness and many dead snakes and rats. The 4 members of the Duhad crew, Grissel, Anora, Brodie and Grant went silently through the sewer system. Grant had a map and knew exactly where they were.
They heard many scampering of feet but never saw what it was that made that noise. After a few hours of going through the horrible smelling sewer's they got under the Clock Tower.
The ladder leading up to it was right infront of them, but so was a shadow, the Wolfstake. It's lizard face hissed at them and it spread it's wings. Grant withdrew his sword, Anora and Brodie held their axes and Grissel his spear. The Wolfstake's tail was like a whip. It came slowly to them, taking it's time. Grant attacked it first.
He swung right to left and up to down, but the Wolfstake dodged every slash. Anora and Brodie helped Grant, but they couldn't get close to it. Grissel stabbed with his spear but none of them could hit it. It hissed and slashed at Brodie who raised his axe to parry it, but it whipped it's tail around striking Brodie down to the ground.
Grant threw a dagger at the Wolfstake, but didn't get close to hitting it. Then he saw Anora running at it...

While the remaining members of the Duhad crew were fighting in the sewers the Herion soldiers were fighting to regain their city. Reynold lead them atop his brown steed.

"Charge men fight with bravery and strength! Do not run!" He yelled sword in hand. He galloped with the remaining 15 horse riders toward the Highland monsters. They were lizards, salamanders but with magic flowing through them. They carried dirks and wooden shields and their were nearly 600 of them. Apparently the summoner had grown tired and couldn't summon as many. The salamanders stood on two feet nearly 5 feet tall.

Reynold charged into them hacking at them. He blocked many blows but he couldn't push through them all so he had to turn around as his horse riders did. The foot soldiers were right behind Reynolds. The two forces collided. Hisses and screams were heared along with the sound of iron on iron.
The Herion soldier's fought with furousity matched by nothing. Their broad swords and short swords went deep into the Highland lizards. Reynold and his men pushed forward through the lizard's lines and finally the lizard lines' broke.
With their lines broken the lizards were unorganized and couldn't fight as well. The battle was looking good for the Herion men.

Anora charged the Wolfstake. Within a few feet of the creature, she fell into a purposeful slide. The waste and refuse from the city above made the sewer floor slick, and the dwarf glided swiftly on the muck. Due to her speed and small stature, she slid beneath the Wolfstake's grasping hands. When she neared the tender under belly, she swung her axe firmly and felt the spray of blood and bile across her face.

She didn't take the time to inspect the wound she caused and continued to slide away from the Wolfstake. Coming to a stop against the opposite wall from Grant and the others, she quickly looked around for signs of anything else approaching.

The Wolfstake felt the pain in it's belly, but the magic blocked most of it out. Grant knew that this fight was taking too long. They had to get moving. Grissel knew as well.

"You threes goes aheads. I'll fights it whiles you are climbings." Grissel hissed then attacked the monster with it's spear.

The 3 members of the Duhad crew began climbing the ladder, Anora, Brodie and Grant in that order. They could hear hisses from Grissel and the Wolfstake. They heared a loud hiss of pain. They were almost there. Grant looked down and saw the Wolfstake spreading it's wings. He looked back up climbing faster and telling the others to go faster.
They could hear the Wolfstake's wings going in the wind. They reached the trapdoor that went into the Clock Tower, Anora opened it and Grant quickly closed it once they were all inside. The Wolfstake it the door with a thud. It hit it again much stronger this time.

"Grant, I'll get yer mother. You and Anora open the gates." Brodie said.

"Right, be careful." Grant said and then he and Anora were running on the floor of the Clock Tower to the door that lead out of it.

Then the Wolfstake broke through the TrapDoor. It saw Grant and Anora first as they ran out of the tower. It flew after them. It went very fast. Grant knew he needed to get into the small building next to the gate. There he just needed to flip a switch and the gate would open and the army would be able to go in.
They were 15 feet away from it. Instinctively they both ducked as the Wolfstake flew right over them. 10 feet now, sweat beaded off their face, 7 feet. The Wolfstake was turning around. 4 feet, the wings of the Wolfstake were powerful and sounded like a gale of wind. 2 feet and flew over them again.
They got inside the small building Grant quickly pulled the lever that began to move some ropes that moved all sorts of things. And slowly the gate began to move. Then the Wolfstake went through the roof of the building. Grant quickly attacked it with his sword parry and trying to get past it's long dagger like nails. Anora helped him and every so often they would cut the creature.
It's stomach was bleeding badly and Grant knew it must be getting weaker. So he took advantage, he took one of his daggers in 1 hand his sword in the other and began to attack it viciously. The Wolfstake was losing ground quickly. It grew tired from the large gash in it's stomach and the many cuts over it's body.
Grant saw an opening in the Wolfstake's defense and he slid his dagger deep into the monster's left arm. Then his sword went into the Wolfstake's chest. Finally Anora swung her axe severing the Wolfstake's head. It collapsed dead.

"Phew good fighting Patride." Anora said with a grin.

"We gotta get to that summoner..." Grant said sheathing both sword and dagger.

Some of the Herion army was in the city now, the rest was coming in. Grant saw Reynolds and the older man saw the younger man.

"Good work Grant. Now we gotta get to that summoner otherwise we'll be fighting the Highlanders." Reynold said. "Here some of the Horse Riders didn't make it." As a horse came into view.

Grant got atop the horse and began to pet it's head. Grant looked back at Anora and she shook her head saying "You aren't gettin me on one of those patridge."

Grant raced his horse to his old home, the castle. The 8 remaining Horse Riders were told to go with him. They all were moving quickly and got into the garden of Grant's old home. They got to the front door Grant swung open.
They climbed the two flights of stairs. Grant assumed the summoner would be in the King's Chambers. They made their way to the King's Chambers. Grant opened the double doors and stepped inside quickly followed by the 8 Horse riders their faces rough.
Grant saw the summoner, it was a she. She stood tall with black hair that went down to her waist. He could see her well in the light. She has brown eyes and a fine skin texture. If they had met in different circumstances Grant might have found her attractive.

"Welcome Prince..." The summoner said her voice icy.

Grant was at a lose for words he didn't know what to say to the woman. She flicked her fingers and the 8 horse riders were pushed by some invisible force out of the room. The doors slammed behind them. Grant could hear them hitting the door as they tried to get back in, but the Summoner ignored them.

"There, now they are gone it will be easier for us to have a conversation. I am Andrea Fernug. Do you know me?" Andrea asked Grant.

"No... I don't... Why are you doing this?" Grant asked back.

"You don't? Perhaps you don't I would have thought you were to have heard of me... But I guess out of the way places like this wouldn't hear much... Why am I doing this? Doing what? Taking over this Kingdom? Well that should be obvious shouldn't it? I want power. I want land."

"There are other ways to do this... You don't have to wage war on Kingdoms..." Grant was cut off.

"I don't? I should just marry into a royal family and inherit land? I think not, too little power too little land. This is the best way. Besides I am a great necromancer."

"That doesn't matter anyway. It is over for you. Your army of beasts is destroyed and you will have ot surrender yourself to me." Grant said firmly.

"That is where you are wrong my dear prince. You haven't caught me just yet." Andrea said slowly backing away to the balcony that looked over the lake of Herion. "It has just begun Grant, you are merely slowing me down... I will be back! And I will win!" Andrea said turning around running now.

She leapt off the balcony, Grant thought she was crazy as he ran to look over the balcony. Then he saw the bird. It was huge. And Andrea was on it. She blew him a kiss and soared away. Grant didn't know when he would see her again...

After Andrea left the magic that was in the Highland Elves left them and they returned to normal. They said they were sorry for doing so, but could not control themselves. Grant's mother the queen was healed. Reynold became the sole commander of the herion army.
It took a week for the capital city of Tersis to be fixed back and cleaned with the elves help. After everything was back to normal for the most part at home Grant, Anora and Brodie took their leave. They went back to Brenford went into the Duhad and sailed back to Trollsbane. Anora and Brodie dropped Grant off and then the two sailed off looking for possible sailors to fill in the missing spots. On the side of the Duhad is carved in the wood: "To never be forgotten the members of the Duhad who fought for others and not themselves... Luke, Grissel, Luethien, Chris, Peter and John Carpathia. May they rest in peace."
