Don't we already have lamps? Don't fishermen get them?

Per se I like both, the torch and the lamp. The perspective seems right etc.; however, there's not enough texture for my taste.

The thing with size is, that we will have a slight change in size at some time in the future which means that they might fit now but not "then"...

good point marty old chum, you can't really tell what the torch is made of. You know martin, you could always rerender it in about 2 seconds

yes, you are right. But I really don't know, how to detail the texture.
It gets blur and dirty, because I have to fit it in this little size!
I set Antialiasing to Extreme but nothing changed...

There are several possibilities to find a good way to create a texture, just use your brain:
1) Look at torches you like in other games (e.g. by starting the game or by search using images.google.com or www.google.com)
2) Find out what material they actually were made of (by using the correct keywords in google)
3) search a book in your library and look it up
4) ...

This is something that I consider totally natural and usual for everyone who is involved with graphics in some kind. Whoever never had the idea to do this probably wastes his or her time by reading this board.

Its like telling someone who wants to write that he should try to bring "some letters on paper" by writing or printing.

That's nothing a graphical artist should be told, it's something he should know by THINKING. (Thinking=using the brain)

Creating graphics has a lot to do with thinking, observing and knowing your environment and surrounding and knowing a plenty about physics and painting.

Very nice speech, the laterns should look like they have an iron holder and the rest should be wood.

One thing that no game ever seems to consider when drawing torches, is that they give off a tremendous amount of smoke.

A torch is a very simple device. You take a stick, wrap some cloth around it, soak the cloth in oil and light it. Works on the same principle as a candle, where the wick burns much slower than the wax that is consumed.

I've made a torch twice in my life when I needed light, and one time I made an oil lamp (The oil lamp almost burned down the trailer of a friend I was visiting at the time, and for some reason he wouldn't let me use it anymore, but it did work <g>).

The oil used was any type of burnable oil such as animal fat, vegtable oil, etc.. Just no petroleum. Those oils are not clean burning at all, and when archeologists visit ancient caves they can see soot on the ceilings from the torches used.

So when you draw flames on a torch, I think you should draw some smoke going up too to add a flavor of realism.

Why no petroleum? Make the smoke smell good while your burning it.

It doesn't make the best fuel for torchs/candles as it has a tendency to explode.

I still don't see the problem. Oh, sorry. I was thinking of citronella. Thats why I said it will make the fire smell good.

And keep the mosquitoes away no doubt.
Plus what are you more likely to have on hand? Vegetable oil or shortening/animal fat or citronella oil? :P

To hell with lanterns! Can't we use radioactive material to light up the town?

Actually, the Egyptians lined their pharoes tombs with a form of crude plutonium, thats why the tomb guards wore all that gold, it protected them from the "curse" so radioactive material was known back then they just thought it was a metal of the gods and they used it to curse people, thats why when you wanted somone dead, you gave them a cursed item made of this metal, and they would die from radioactive exposure.
