As former guard captain of Runewick, here's what I'd suggest:
We'll plant a dense, insurmountable hedge around the entrance to Runewick. It needs to be tall enough so one can't just climb over it, yet not too tall, so we can still shoot arrows and spells over it, should our town ever be assaulted, like during Mas. For this reason we also need enough space inside the hedge for Runewick's brave defenders to move about. Our soil is famously fertile, so with the help of some druidic magic a hedge like this should grow in no time!
As for the entrance, I suggest to construct a small, roofed gatehouse. Sandstone, just like what the bridge is build of. An iron gate will make sure that wildlife and troublemakers stay outside.
The fireplace with the kettle is nice, a good place to sit at while keeping watch or to rest at after a day of hard work on the fields or in the woods. We definitely gonna keep that and include it in the protected area, unlike the logging camp, which should be relocated to the edge of the woods.

Alle Bürger sind aufgerufen sich am 15. Chos im Jahre 75 ((Freitag 6. Juni 20 Uhr)) am Stadttor zu versammeln.
Die Pläne für das Tor sollen besprochen und fixiert werden.
Erste provisorische Sicherungsmaßnahmen und Bauarbeiten müssen vor dem Mas gestartet und beeendet werden!

In einer gemeinschaftlichen Aktion wurde das Stadttor und der Teleporter gesichert!
Der Dankt gilt allen Beteiligten Bewohnern Runewicks und auch der Unterstützung aus Cadomyr!

For the perusal of my fellow citizen, here is my suggestion on how to approach this matter.
I would favour going based on the suggestion of the former guard captain, with one change. Namely that I believe a side gate would be beneficial.
One reason is that our farmers rest on these benches, perhaps cooking their lunch or socializing with others as they take breaks between tending to their fields, constantly weaving back and forth. I believe it would be detrimental to make them walk the long path around to use the main gate that travelers and merchants would use as they leave and enter the realm, yet having a safe place to rest while they take breaks also appears of large enough importance to me to not give them a separate resting area elsewhere beyond the gates.
Another reason is the ability to escape in and out of a side gate should the main one be under assault. I know this also allows an additional path for our enemies to take, but I believe we as defenders still hold the advantage and would benefit more from it than it would be a demerit defensively, requiring us to invest less manpower to defend it than it would for them to split up and assault two fronts. Though I am of course no expert on the matter, as I am not a warrior myself.
Below is an amended sketch with the addition of such a side gate and some slight relocation of the sitting area.
