All of sudden

All of sudden

She smiled slightly to herself as she looked at her notes again.
Yes, it was time to ask Aswe to marry her.
Irina was willing to spend the rest of her life with this wonderful and energetic woman.

What she didn't know was that the rest of her life was already at an end.
The little bar of soap on the floor, the fall, her head on the edge of the bathtub ....

All of a sudden there was just a crack in her neck and the rest of Irina's life was over.

Aswe looked down at the desk and what was in front of her. a partially filled bottle, it was about the only thing in the flat she could look at these days - everything else reminded her of Irina. Every item in those two rooms had a spiderweb that led back to her, every piece of furniture, every curio on the shelves, the chairs and especially the bed - it all led back to her, echoes, vibrations, whatever you wanted to call them they lit up her mind with happier times, times or warmth and plenty, times without worry or sadness.

But those times were pased, dead and buried along with Irina, cut short by a freak accident and now the passing of the world felt like a personal insult, the sun still shone, the grass still grew, the birds still sang and children still laughed, didn't they know? The world had ended for her on that day but it refused to catch up and stick with the playbill, She stopped and Aswe's life crystallised like a fly in amber. Yet the world selfishly kept going. A tear rolled down her cheek and she shook her head, Selfish? No, Indifferent, callously so, it was the indifference of the world that would crush you, everyone walks past the beggar. her free hand tightened into a fist, nails biting her palm, impotent rage flowed through Aswe - Why did it have to be her? Why did the world's indifference always fall on her as misfortune?

She poured a glass for herself with a tight grip on both the bottle and the glass, aiming the liquid was becoming tougher. She stared blankly at the contents of the glass as the candlelight flickered through it, her lips pursed. This wasn't the first human she had known to die, it was what humans did. Birth, life, death sometimes undeath, simple and just as the movements of the moons, entirely predictable. It should not effect her this much, she knew the day would come eventually, so why has it? She was unwilling to investigate it deeper, it was still too raw. But a part of her already knew why - Irina was perhaps her only passing grasp at happiness and true love in this life of hers. A slow sigh formulated in her lungs and passed on through, followed by a slow blink, another tear slid down her face.

She missed it all, the smile that was only for her, the atmosphere of acceptance, the rationalisations of all her mistakes, a mind she could spar with. Someone who worried for her, someone who cared for her beyond what she could do for them. She missed her equal in every regard, she missed Irina, not one thing felt real or substantive without her there. She may never feel whole again, she knew she never could, Irina was once in a lifetime, even one as long as Aswe's. Pressing the bottom of the glass to her forehead she came to a conclusion; If she could have none of that, she would have Adron's greatest gift: Oblivion.

The glass was empty again, she poured herself another.

Agitated, frustrated, tetchy, nettled.

It is how she would describe herself as of late, the winter cold and the ill foreboding of Mas always put Aswe in a foul mood, she grit her teeth and knocked back a drink, looking out at the sea from the window of her home. The waters were turbulent and violent, just like the days of blood themselves, while the wind whipped past like a screaming banshee. In days past, she would have had a reason to go out and defend the gate. Whether it was to defend Runewick, or to keep Irina safe she would have never confirmed, half of the time she would have rather let Runewick fall to rubble and ruin. She rubbed the bridge of her nose and shook her head. Irina was out there, it was her first Mas out there, Her first time at the mercy of the evil days. She closed her eyes for a moment and a tear ran down her face, she would not let her be alone.

Dagger in hand she walked over to the gravesite, the sun was fading into the horizon, she rubbed her neck and looked up at the dark clouds hovering above in all directions, the cold was worsening, she took a sip for warmth and exhaled.

She saw the grave, her chest tightened, her stomach sank, the world went quiet and the wind's chill vanished. The grave was empty, the coffin exposed to the air and it's lid torn off, she was not there, Irina was gone.

She fell to her knees and screamed. Until she had her back, all she would drink was blood.
