Hmmm Halflings or Hobbits?

May I ask why halflings/hobbits likes to get called halflings? Halfling is the name used for hobbits, by humans. And hobbit is the "real" name for them according to Tolkien himself.
But if you follow Tolkiens world, you will also know that orcs and goblins are the same.

The originate word you're looking for is Holbytlan, wich means hole-builders. But, it is yet not proven that Tolkien was the one inventing the word Hobbit, so hobbit or halfling, doesn't matter.Adano Eles wrote:Hobbit is a word which originates in the Rohirrim language from middle- earth.
"Same shit different names"
Well, the question is:
how do Halflings/Hobbits call themselves?
For shure they wont call themselves Haflings, which is a bit derogatory and obviously created by the big people.

In first instance I call myself Zasmia
Why does everyone bother about how my race is called? Ingame I call humans "big ones", elves are "tall ones" and orcs are "green ones" (brr). If I had to decide, I would be statisfied with both, halfling and hobbit. But as I stated before, one (halfling) look at the language skill should clear it up. In Illarion we are Halflings, not Hobbits.

Were and when in Illarion did this happen? I must have missed that. It' s strange...halfling was a term created by Men as a "insult" to the height of that race...
Elaralith sounds like you read something I wrote, but I never implied that it was an insult. And as I have already said, this is not Tolkiens world.Elaralith wrote:It' s strange...halfling was a term created by Men as a "insult" to the height of that race...very strange for people to like to be insulted.
Personally I think that Hobbit sounds like a nicer word for Halfling, but that's my oppinion.

Okay, I stood idle while Elaralith quoted me, but now Tal takes credit for something I said? This is despicable...paul laffing wrote:I HEARD that halfing is considered a derogatory name by some, as it is insulting the height of a hobbit, but I think that hobbit is just the name of the shirefolk, as when Gandalf talked about Smeigol (or golem), he said that he was part of the riverfolk and was related to hobbits. Not conclusive, but still more evidence.
