It was a cool night in the desert city of Cadomyr when Reena woke from her troubled sleep. Cool enough that she wore a light cloak over her clothing, though that wasn't unusual. She was used to the changing climates between night and day, even gladly welcomed them, for her work during the day left her hot and tired, and nights brought her comfort and relaxation. Stepping out of her flat that night, Reena made her way to the market to talk to some of the merchants who were cleaning up for the day as well as to keep an eye out on the town.
Her "vacation" was close to being over, and Reena couldn't be more thankful. Restlessness was her enemy; it kept her from resting and regaining her health like she'd been told to do by several medicos. Soon she'd be able to return to her building project, one she had started months ago. The training arena finally was going to take off after having collected all the necessary supplies for it.
Regardless, work would resume soon and the raven haired woman couldn't be more excited.
But then everything changed when she heard her sister's voice.
"Hello, my darling little sister."
It felt like her heart stopped when hearing Minerva's voice. It had been twelve- no- thirteen years since they had last seen each other. Reena turned, and upon seeing her sister, lost all sense of herself. Her thoughts were muddled and a thousand emotions raced through her, most dominant of them were confusion, elation, and then anger.
Confusion
Why was she here? How did she even get here? Where had she been all these years? Albar? Pennymill? Lor-Angur? Why now?
Elation
I've missed her. She's finally back. My sister is here at last. She looks the same. Gods... that outfit.
Anger
She shouldn't have come here. Not after all this time. Does she think that I'll accept her being here so easily?
"Minerva."
Reena thinks to herself:
This will be interesting.

Re: Returning Home
Three. The amount of hours she had spent outside the gate that morning, dreading to go inside.
She had laughed nervously at her own hesitation. She was usually so confident, yet the thought of meeting her sister after all these years horrified her.
Especially as the bearer of bad news.
Minerva Morelis. Once more, all she brought along with her, was bad news for her family.
She had thought to herself, before finally having walked inside, a wry grin on her lips.
------
"Minerva."
Her sister's voice after all these years pierced through her like a dagger, instantly making her regret her choice of finally having walked through those gates.
No, that was not right. She loved her sister dearly, and after the immediate shock had subsided within her, she realised she was on the verge of tears. Quickly turning her gaze away, pretending to have a look around the market, she began with a bit of childish banter like they had as children. Without really thinking about it, she had begun teasing Reena about how she used to wet the bed they had shared as children, when she was younger, all the while her head churning like crazy trying to settle her thoughts.
She doubted herself. Was it really okay for her to be back, after all these years? Maybe she should've sent their brother to tell Reena, instead.
Though deep down, she knew it had to be her.
She had never wanted to leave her dear sister behind to venture the world on her own, but she imagined that was the impression Reena had gotten of her. She never told Reena the real reason she left, in fear it would make her hate their mother. That didn't matter anymore, though. She just hoped Reena would hear her out, eventually.
Back to the childish bantering. She heard herself mock Reena's position as Commander of the guard. "My poor sister, succumbing to.. to.." her own mocking voice faded away, once more delving into the depths of her own thoughts.
She really needed to learn to watch her own tongue, always speaking before thinking over what she was about to say.
Had her sister really reached such a high position, though? She felt a feeling of profound pride rise inside of her. She had never been one to like the royalty, the nobles or those who served them, yet she could not help but be proud of her sister.
She snapped back to reality as she noticed Reena staring at her. Apparantly she had gone quiet for longer than she thought.
"You don't seem particularly happy to see me."
"Oh, I am happy. I'll be even happier when you find something else to wear."
They were selecting her an outfit, now. Well fine, she thought. Her clothes were old and worn, anyways.
Her sister genuinely seemed happy. She didn't want to ruin that with bad news, not right now, she told herself. Though she knew she was just putting off the inevitable. Sooner or later she had to tell her.
Once more snapping out of her thoughts, she looked down at a key in her palm. Why was that there?
Oh, right. The key to Reena's flat. She recalled having just protested Reena's suggestion of her renting a room in the inn, and then Reena reluctantly handing the key over to her. Was she hiding something from her, in her flat? Her sisterly instinct was still present, she felt. She knew Reena had something hidden from her. Oh well.
She could use some sleep after her long journey. Her mind was all foggy and she couldn't seem to think straight, all these thoughts churning around in her head.
"I'll be working." She heard her sisters voice say, as she headed in the direction Reena had pointed when she asked where the flat was.

Re: Returning Home
Reena hadn't been given a chance to tell Lyrica about Minerva, and she was too late by the surprised look on Lyrica's face upon seeing the woman sprawled across Reena's bed. She lured Lyrica into the taverrn to chat, reluctantly telling her about the sister she had never mentioned before. Sure, Reena had told her and Sarai about her brothers Julian and Garrett, but talking about Minerva was something she refused to do, until it became necessary.
Reena was ruled by the heartache she had kept hidden away since Minerva left. It had burst through the walls she'd built when she was eighteen to keep it all in. It had taken a year for Reena to get over Minerva's disappearance, a year of crying herself to sleep at night and hiding from their mother's forceful attempts to turn Reena into the daughter she'd always wanted. Minerva was groomed from a young age to act like a lady, attend balls, and marry a duke's son: a typical life for a a daughter of their mother's status. Once Minerva ran away, she turned her attention toward Reena, the more resistant of the two.
Reena refused to attend balls, consistently ruining all the party dresses she had, getting dirty before important occasions, and altogether being insubordinate toward her mother's wishes.
At first she tried to respect what her mother wanted; anything to stop her from grieving. But it soon became too much for Reena to bear. Dance after dance, dinner parties every week, corsets and big-skirted dresses; Reena eventually stood her ground and told her mother that it was enough. She wasn't Minerva, nor would she ever be. Her father stood by her side, knowing that his quiet and reflective daughter was not suited for the lifestyle that Reena had tried to accept.
Thirteen years later, Reena still didn't enjoy those sorts of things, though she suffered through them with a small smile to save face. Part of her thanks her mother for teaching her how to pass as interested when she was dreadfully bored or as calm when inside she was fuming, though she wouldn't admit it to anyone.
"Does she know... about us?"
Lyrica's question draws Reena back to the present, turning her dark eyes on the blue haired elfess seated in front of her. She looks tired and worn thin still from her journey to Albar, though she continues to stay up at all hours of the night occasionally. Now a worried expression is plastered on her face and her eyes are filled with doubt.
"Not yet. But I'm going to tell her, before you two meet."
What would Minerva think about her relationship? Would she accept her choice in a companion? They'd never talked about relationships when they were still living under the same roof so long ago. Reena's only romantic interactions before Lyrica were with Hassan when she was eleven and her brief stint with a drill instructor during her time in Albar, though it never went further than flirting.
Tapping her fingers on the table before her, Reena's mind works through the turmoil of having her sister in Cadomyr again.

Re: Returning Home
She had spent the good part of that morning searching for her staff. She knew it was there somewhere, but where it was she just could not fathom. Come to think of it, did she even have it with her when she entered the gates?
This wasn't the first time Minerva had lost her staff. Actually, if she were to count, it was the seventh staff she had lost over the past five years, since she had started using them. It wasn't that she was forgetful, or anything! The damned staves just had this habit of slipping away, was all.
Currently she found herself waiting for Reena to speak. The new staff Reena got for her resting at her side, as she sat by the table in Reena's flat, her sister sitting opposite of her. She had soon enough noticed that Reena was being hesitant about something, something that seemed to be bothering her. Yet, it had still surprised her how obedient Reena had been, when Minerva insisted the two went to the flat to have a talk. Perhaps this was what she wanted?
"I have a... partner... I guess you could say." Her sister seemed nervous
"Could say? A pet? A servant boy?" She grinned wickedly, teasing her sister.
"She.." Her sister corrected her.
She? It dawned upon her. Her sister was seeing a woman. Why was she so nervous to tell her, though? It's not like Minerva herself had not been with a woman befo-
Oh. Right. Thirteen years, since they last saw each other. Of course she wouldn't know that, or how Minerva would react. How could she?
Minerva herself would never have imagined her sister to like women. She might have been a tomboy as a child, and, from the looks of it, still was. Though that she would be interested in women? She still remembered her sisters crush on Hassan, when her sister was eleven.
Her darling little sister had always seemed so perfect to her. Even if she opposed their mother on her every word, on the topic of how women should behave.
"My perfect little sister is not so perfect after all." She had a happy smile upon her lips as she walked around the table, embracing Reena. A warm feeling spread within Minerva. She was so happy for her sister, that she had actually found a lover to be with. Though it made her nervous to think of meeting her, her sister's lover.
"I suppose you'd be overjoyed to hear that I have two of them then?" she heard her sister say.
Two? Now she was just showing off. Not even Minerva had taken on two at once through the years.
"Let's go for some drinks, shall we, my darling little sister?" She said, backing away from the embrace.
"And get out of that awful armor and into something proper. What's with you and armor, anyways. Do you always wear that thing?"

Re: Returning Home
Minerva cherished the sight of her sister, who was sitting in the chair before her. Reena, now wearing a blue dress, looked more beautiful than ever. Not that she didn't think her darling little sister beautiful when she wore regular clothes, or even that awful armor of hers, but she was even more so in a dress. Granted, Minerva had never seen her sister in a dress before. Their mother had tried, of course, but Reena had always resisted. Always finding new ways to sully the dresses their mother bought for her, until their mother had finally caved and given up.
-----
It had taken longer than she had anticipated, reaching the tavern. First, they had encountered a few lizard-men. She didn't recall many of them being around thirteen years ago. Then again, a lot had changed since then, so she did not pay it much mind. They had also happened upon Lyrica, whom soon revealed herself to be one of Reena's lovers. After the initial introductions, the conversation had quickly turned into sibling banter. Mostly it consisted of Minerva being sassy towards her sister, though just as important; Minerva calling Reena by her favorite nickname for her, "Bed-wetter".
Contrary to what the nickname would suggest, however, Reena had only wet the bed they shared as children twice, maybe thrice, while they were children. However, Minerva had no intentions of letting it go. It was just too fun, mocking Reena for it.
At first it had been the two of them alone in the tavern. Minerva and Lyrica. Reena had been dragged away by one of the lizard-men for some conversation, with promises of her return. So there she was, alone with Lyrica. She hadn't really had the chance to form an opinion of the elfess yet. Lyrica was attractive, that much didn't require consideration. Minerva's mind was however preoccupied with the thoughts of what she had to tell Reena, later. She knew she had to do it soon, though she did not want to at all. It had felt so good to return, that ruining the mood with the bad news she brought seemed unthinkable.
She had noted a few things so far about Lyrica though. One, she did not like the way she addressed Minerva.
Minny. She called her by what her sister called her, and she did not like it. Only Reena was allowed to call her that.
Two, she loved how feisty the elfess appeared to be. She'd always liked people with a fierce spirit.
And finally, three. She did not like how the elfess spoke of her sister possessively. "She's mine" Lyrica had said earlier. It sounded to Minerva like Lyrica was talking of some object she owned, not Minerva's sister. Additionally, it made her somewhat jealous. Reena was hers. Her sister. Her flesh and blood. Hers. Was she being a hypocrite? No, never. It was different when it was flesh and blood, besides, she didn't speak it out loud.
"So, Raven says you're a year older?" Lyrica attempted to engage in conversation with her.
Raven. Apparently this was a nickname Lyrica had given Reena. Not the most original one, that Minerva had heard, but with all the nicknames she had given Reena over the years, she did not feel any need to complain. Willingly she had replied in return to Lyrica's words, though Minerva's mind had been elsewhere entirely, still lingering upon what she had to tell Reena.
They had eventually gone out to find Reena, as she was taking so long with her talk with the lizard-man. Now they were sitting at the balcony of the inn. It appeared they had also brought along with them the second lover, Sarai. Her sister had not been joking when she said she had two. She faintly remembered having been introduced to Sarai just moments before. There was also the lizard-man. K'shire, his name was, if she recalled correctly. It didn't really matter. Sitting next to her to her right was Reena. That mattered.
-----
Minerva cherished the sight of her sister. Though her thoughts went to a dark place rather quickly. At least she had a bottle of rum, to comfort her and give her courage for what would happen not much later.
She could hear herself taking part of the conversation at hand, all the while contemplating how she would tell Reena.
How she could tell her the bad news.
The news of their parents' death.

Re: Returning Home
The impromptu picnic on the inn balcony had proven to be slightly disastrous from jealous looks to a misunderstood comment made by S'rrt (who promptly left), landing the four remaining females in various states of drunkenness. Reena didn't like drinking, though she spent much of her time partaking in social bouts of drinking. She also didn't normally drink anything strong than rum, perhaps once in a blue moon, but she made an exception tonight. With a bottle of bearslayer in her hand, Reena watched Sarai dive off of the balcony and into the gently rolling waves of the water below.
Lyrica was too intoxicated to make the same dive, so instead of doing so, she climbed down the stairs to join Sarai on the beach. Reena thought back to Minerva's misspeak earlier before S'rrt left.
"Emerald Forests, Lor-Angur, Mossley..."
That caught her attention. What was she doing in Mossley, where their parents kept a farm? Never in a thousand years would Reena have thought Minerva would go visit their parents, not after the broken relationship she left behind. So she asks Minerva about it.
"What were you doing in Mossley, Minerva?"
"Julian told me about some rumors."
"Rumors?"
"The farm.. it burned down... in a fire..."
"No... don't... they were...?"
Minerva nodded, and it was like Reena's world came crashing down around her. How many times would she have to suffer since returning to Cadomyr? Reena had thought that life would be easier here, void of all the terrible feelings and things she'd experienced in Albar, but that wasn't the case. Heartache had become her closest companion it seemed.
And now her parents were dead. The two people that had raised her into adulthood no longer walked the earth. Mortality was playing a role in her life now, and she wasn't ready to face that.

Re: Returning Home
It was over with, and it had been worse than Minerva had feared. Seeing Reena's look of despair that night, as she heard of their parents death, made her feel as if she was choking. She was not sure if she had ever felt that terrible her entire life, seeing her sister like that. Therefore, the following embrace had been just as comforting for her as it had been for Reena, or at least, she hoped it had been that comforting for Reena.
Minerva had already grieved the loss of their parents, so the only thing on her mind now was how heart-tearing it was to watch her darling little sister do the same. She had to stay and comfort her, she knew that.
She remembered little more of that night, as she had passed out from drinking too much rum. The next day she had with an aching head gone to force herself to eat some breakfast, when she had found her sister at the marketplace. They had begun speaking, and soon enough Minerva revealed the real reason for why she left all those years ago.
Reena had begun to open up more to Minerva after that, and as horrifying as some of what she learned was, she couldn't help but be happy that Reena's hatred for her leaving thirteen years had apparently disappeared and been replaced with trust.
That her sister had been raped by her former captain had horrified her the most. "Who is he? Where is he now?" She had growled. Anger, hatred and a fury beyond her own belief had filled her in the matter of seconds as she listened to her sisters story, all the while planning out how she would torture, then murder and then torture again, this captain who had defiled and forced himself upon her sister. And no, the order of murder and torture didn't really have to make sense. She was furious, after all.
"Lyrica hunted him down and killed him." her sister had said quietly in response to her questions. She did? She cared so much for Reena, that she would hunt someone down and murder them?
Minerva had decided there and then. She liked this elfess. Though, she was still a bit wry that she herself had not been the one to hunt down and murder this man. This so called captain. To torture him by her own hands until he screamed for mercy and then some more, all for what he had done against Reena.
She had felt herself calming down. The rest of the day had been a breeze of playful jests with her sister. She had felt like a child again as they had pushed each other into the fountain, all in good fun of course. Lyrica had even appeared and bought the two of them new dresses, as their old ones were all soaked from the fountain water. She had felt herself starting to warm up to the idea of having Lyrica around. Minerva was starting to feel at home again in Cadomyr, perhaps she would stay for good this time.
Later that evening Minerva was laying in her own bed that Reena had gotten her, Reena only a few inches away from her face as she had crawled in there with her. In each others comforting embrace, they were playing catch-up, telling stories in turn of what had happened during the past thirteen years since they last saw each other.

Re: Returning Home
So much time had passed since that night that the days seemed to all roll into one in her mind.
Reena didn't know what was going on anymore. One day, she and Minerva were best friends, the next, they were at their wit's ends with each other over petty things. Their relationship seemed strained most days, and Reena didn't know what to do to try and fix things. She found herself being drawn more and more into her work, often sleeping in a spare room at the palace, or even at her desk, wadding up her cloak and using it as a pillow.
With how things were going between Galmair and Cadomyr, it was no surprise that she had little time to spend with Minerva or Lyrica. Reena felt like she was abandoning them, but she knew that if she left her job, things could get so much more worse.
Escaping from the palace, Reena hid in the recently completed training arena, munching on a small meal of bread and an apple. Lyrica would plead with her to eat more; Minerva would just sit and watch her, not commenting. Either way, she wouldn't win with them. Reena loved them both dearly, but she needed a few moments of being alone to collect herself.
The political game that was being played was finally starting to get to her; her nerves were frazzled, her body tired from not sleeping nearly as much as she used to. It was beginning to show, especially when she made the foolhardy decision to speak to Galmair's Chancellor, Evie and the Don's left hand, Oxiana. Never, in the right state of mind, would she do such a thing and go against another person's position, but something had needed to be done. Later that night she snapped at Vern for his ineptitude.
Reena missed Minerva and Lyrica. She needed them.
