Credible trade for my dwarf?

Well I'm looking to make a mainly crafts dwarf (with a little fighting ability for goblins and whatnot) and am looking for a good rpwise craft to take up. I'd prefer NOT to go smith like every other dwarf, and I'd also prefer not to take up multiple crafts (carpenter lumberjack or smithing mining is fine though). I'd like to know what's in most demand and what would be credible for a dwarf to do. Is there a shortage of farmers? Brewers? Cooks? Carpenters? Smiths?

Anyone have some suggestions on a good craft for my dwarf to take up, it'd be much appreciated.

These aren't really things you should ask on the forums. Topics like this, you should ask other characters in game. :)

Re: Credible trade for my dwarf?

The thing is I'd like to rp my background as if I always was the profession I'm going to choose, as my dwarf certaintly hasn't done nothing in 70 years :) Is asking this sort of stuff against the rules? I just don't wanna be a redundant crafter.

edit: ty for replying so quick tho

I understand. It's not against the rules, just frowned upon and most people will just tell you to find out in game. I'll give you one hint though, there are a number of smiths. Figure it out from there.

Re: Credible trade for my dwarf?

Just from a practical point of view it may be hard to RP having always been in a profession it is going to take you awhile to skill in. And a conundrum will be what has that dwarf done for the past 70 years? :D Perhaps you can either RP him refusing to continue the profession due to some great and interesting tragedy/story and test other professions seeing which will be most in demand and even which you would like to do with your char? I can understand it may be hard to ask in game when you want to already RP something however I don't think you would be skilled in anything for a little while anyway.

Re: Credible trade for my dwarf?

I agree, it would take a while to become good in any skill. But if you really want to RP your dwarf as being already skilled, you could go powergame alone until he has some skill, and roleplay with another character as you do so. Though that's just a suggestion. (I'd personally just roleplay a head injury/being rusty/etc. or simply roleplay him being skilled and not let people see how terrible you are :P )

Cut the 'find out in game' nonsense and somebody just tell the guy what crafts are in most demand IG.

It really is that easy.

Re: Credible trade for my dwarf?

I'm thinking the same as Grokk, to be honest. It's not exactly a big secret. I don't really know most crafters, to be honest, but just from what I've seen...

Goldsmiths are seemingly unheard of. There is one very good one, I believe, but he doesn't show his face ingame anymore. (Gem cutting usually goes along with goldsmithing)

I think there were two novice brewers ingame at one point, but I'm not sure if they're around anymore. That'd also be a good craft to go. Glassblowing might go hand in hand with this (there aren't many of those, either).

Cooks, smiths, and tailors seem to make up the majority of craftsmen. Masters of these crafts are much harder to come by, but I'd say smithing has the most, with cooking in a close second. I'm not sure if there's an active master tailor ingame at the moment. There seem to be less woodworkers than the said three (handles seem to be in high demand), but there are a few who come ingame every once in a while.

Any of the "collection" crafts are usually filled by their respective "creation" craft. But, I'm sure smiths could always use more ores/ingots, crafters more wood/boards/branches/boughs, tailors more cloth/thread, etc.

I'm not sure if I'm entirely right, so don't take my word for it. If I'm missing anything, someone else feel free to add. It's late. >.<

Re: Credible trade for my dwarf?

Illarion gives plenty of leeway when it comes to 'professions'. There aren't any 'dwarf only' jobs and there aren't any job that are otherwise racially separated. You can do any job your character is capable of, as such it's preferable to actually go in-game and see for yourself rather then trying to attune your character to a mutable idea like 'what job can i have the easiest time making money in'. Things like these are subject to change with the interest of the people playing the game. It may be farming now but tomorrow four or five players might make new characters who are farmers as well, which would obviously change the balance of which professions are 'in demand.' Rather then looking for the leg up on others try simply doing something your interested in. Unless you break a rule you aren't answerable to anyone for your choice. Even if every dwarf player IG disagreed with your choice that won't mean a thing nor stop you from playing your role.

As to professions there are several reasons some crafts are NOT in demand.

Job popularity is based on what benefits your character and other characters the most. Things like gold smithing aren't popular and therefore are relatively profitless because most of the items that people actually want are easily obtainable and the items themselves save for one have no effect on a character (don't make them stronger or weaker) on their own. you'll find money in the most used and useful of item crafts. Smithing for armor and weapons, carpentry for weapons and wands, cooking for the constitution bonus and so on. The things that are least used tend to be least in demand and offer the least profit as they do in real life.

p.s. there is no real brewing craft, cooking and brewing are the same. so a master cook is also a master brewer.

Re: Credible trade for my dwarf?

Good to know. Thank you, Athian. :P

And, yes, I was only giving you an idea of which crafts are lacking people to perform them. I most certainly wasn't speaking of which would be the best to make coin. I apologize if I made it seem that way.

Re: Credible trade for my dwarf?

as I know there are a lot of smithes, carpenters, and cooks, but how many of them are masters? I dont know many mastersmithes. But its true you will find not many characters working as a goldsmith or gemcutter, may be you will never find a master goldsmith or master gemcutter. I think most of the smithes and carpenters have an average level. You need a lot of time and material to become a master. And for me its fine that you also need a lot of time to find a master and that masters are rare. Seems at the moment there is no market for master crafter. You can get a lot of things (only a master crafter can made) from monsterdrops or treasure hunts so that there is no need to improve the knowledge of a crafter to the master level.

Re: Credible trade for my dwarf?

As of this moment, if I was making a crafter I honestly wouldn't know what one craft to concentrate on. I know a couple of chars would like arrows (woodworking) and have trouble finding any, glass blower if you can sell less then the NPC's due to the alchemists needing bottles, tailor seems to be hard to find for those wanting fur trousers, mage robes but I would have to get in game to see a demand also. :D

I know this is not what you wanted to do, however it seems there are many "specialists" who no longer want to make "simple" things like arrows, dig for throwing stones, basic farming supplies like grow onions so I thought a non-specific crafter that only made basic items in a few crafts would be well received.

Keeping an eye on the trade board might help in your decision also: http://illarion.org/community/forums/viewforum.php?f=44

Re: Credible trade for my dwarf?

Mm, seems things have changed. I simply believe that it is better for new players, or any players, to go play the game and roleplay, finding these things out with their character. That's a much better experience than simply giving answers, in my opinion.

There are plenty of other experiences that Illarion has to offer. Trust me when I say we haven't ruined any. :P
