Eliza's (open RP)

[Achae Eanstray]

(( feel like writing something about your char but don't want to start a thread.. here is your chance ))

An old woman with thinning silver grey hair sits in the chair next to Eliza. Her eyes are slightly cloudy indicating she possibly can't see well, yet she manages to smile at anyone entering. She wears a clean though worn dress and a shawl over her shoulders appearing comfortable enough to stay most of the day. When no one is there she turns and whispers to Eliza occasionally offering a fish somehow appearing from her bag. It is unsure how she arrived or why she is there but will tell people her name is Bessie and immediately starts asking them questions being interested in what they do on Gobaith, what they think of the happenings and if they are happy. Pulling an apple from her bag, she peels it while listening yet is obviously intent on each word. Finally as they close their depot and wave bidding their farewell she asks the important question..."what one thing will make you even happier?"

Yet if more then one is there, she remains quiet and simply smiles as if happy they talk to each other. Never repeating anything she hears, it is unsure what secrets she possesses yet her demeaner is always as if her entire life is dedicated to listening.

A whistling, tanned Halfling steps into the shop, carrying a sign under his left arm, and a seat in the right. To say a 'seat' might be misleading, to say carrying would always be stretching a tale. No, he was dragging a small stool in his right hand. The Halfling, whilst being tall for his race, was skinny to the point that if his mother saw him, she'd faint with fright. He walks with short brown hair upon his head, perhaps the fringe just dangling in front of his eyes if the wind were to blow in the wrong direction. Like his over-all body, the Halfling's face is skinny, but full. Full of life as it were, with bright blue eyes and a face with enough laughing wrinkles to suggest the Halfling was of good cheer most of the time.

He wears simple clothes at the moment, farming gear he likely had since his childhood, but who knows. A straw had sits upon his head, be it lopsided, but still it sits there and he doesn't seem to care. But where were we?

The Halfling sets up against a table at the other end, just opposite the sage of a Lizard. At this point, he's hanged the sign up on the tables front which reads:
" Rhymes for fifty copper!" "
Now sitting inside the shop, his ass on his small old stool, that creeks as if it hadn't been meant for it's purpose. The Halfling simply waits for business.

Hearing a clatter as someone enters, the old woman's rheumy eyes watches a blur of either a child or thin halfling enter the shop and with some confusion in her old voice manages to greet him anyway. "Hello Sonny! You look a little thin, are you hungry?" ...digging in her bag for an apple after setting out two fish for Eliza. Appearing almost comical in her squinting attempt to read the sign she then cackles happily pulling out her meager copper from the bag then shaking it hard and listening carefully attempting to find more. "You got a rhyme worth just 5 copper while you wait for more business?"

The Halfling grins, then simply nods before starting to speak. His voice perhaps would take someone by surprise, being taller than the usual Halfling, one might expect a rough crooking to come forth. But no, his voice is as soft as as his own races tongue :

"I'll rhyme for any copper, lord gods know I have no job that one would call proper. But what type of rhyme would the women wish, be one of romance or some maidens kiss? Or perhaps a rhyme, I'll be so kind, which will question all that we have gathered in our times. Maybe still, I have no will, to say no to a request if my pockets were to magically fill."

Grinning still, the Halfling watches the women, waiting for her next words.

Bessie cackles so hard at the halfling's words she begins a coughing spree. When finally catching her breath with only a little wheezing she squints toward his direction.

Sonny, I am long past wanting to hear of a budding romance, anyone I would meet now would be just a crochety old man on his last legs, if he walked at all!

Giving the halfling an exaggerated wink, she straightens her back in the chair as much as possible and slowly smiles, her eyes distant as if remembering something important to her.

Though, I was considered quite nice looking in my younger days!

Bessie then reaches to straighten her blouse of a few wrinkles before running her hand through her thinning grey hair as if to straighten it to no avail before speaking again.

I tell you what Sonny, I like your voice...you pick any subject you want for old Bessie.. maybe what you would like the most, something that makes you happy?

She takes the slice of apple and begins to slowly eat it taking longer then normal to chew, it becomes apparent that she is missing more then a few teeth.

The Halfling allows a chuckle to flow from his throat, then returns the smile to the old women before speaking:

"You have no idea how much joy that brings, Gods know those are all that women ever want me to 'sing'. But perhaps I have just what you want, an old tale I learned of a sickening haunt. I will not lie, it's not the warmest of tunes, perhaps one might say it's simply full of gloom. But as it were, and as it is."

With that, the Halfling gives a small, 'professional' cough before speaking one more, his voice sounding darker somewhat, his eyes never leaving the floor as he recites the tale:

"As the night covers the glen, the mist comes roaming down again. As cold as the death, as shallow as a murderers breath. For many'a person has been captive of this mist, lost long ago leaving their loved ones without that one last wanting kiss. No one not knows what happens as the mist falls, not one sound will you ever here call. Families, lovers and single people all suffer the same fate, as if all were dragged away through the same hellish gates.

But as this mist falls on the ground, you wont hear a single sound. It will trap you like a vice, it will twist you away to be precise. For no one escapes from this glen, not even if you prayed with many'a amen. For hundreds of years this has been it's call, it's place in our world to trap those with foolish gall.

So beware and take with you some care, only death knows what awaits out there."

Bessie leans back in the chair as her frail body evinces only the slightest squeak in the worn chair while it adjusts to the change of position. Resting one wrinkled arm on Eliza's table, her hand strangely dainty and delicate as it lay flat though calluses on the fingers testify to work accomplished in younger days, her eyes close as she listens to his story with rapt attention and only an occasional wheeze is heard the entire time he speaks while the remainder of the apple lay untouched in her lap. When his story is completed she gives a long sigh.

I can see that mist Sonny, some day...maybe soon... I think I would like to go see what is there.

Bessie's eyes open as she turns to the blur of the halfling trying to see him clearly yet finally gives up and glances in the general direction of the door before she speaks again while giving a small shake of her head attempting to dispel the sudden gloom of the shop.


I fear your story is worth much more then I can give Sonny. I wish I had more for another, however you didn't answer my question though my mind tends to roam and I may not have even asked it.

The faint pink of her cheeks as she blushes manages to hide some of the wrinkles while giving just a hint of the beauty she was in her younger days.

Tell me what makes you happy in life Sonny, if you could accomplish one thing..what would it be?
