magic and dwarves

Post by Drogla »

It has come to my attention that many dwarves are mages, myself included. on the website it says "...and hate magic..." and i was wondering that it should be changed to something like "...and are not found of magics power" or "...accept magic, but prefer not to use it"
just a thought

No one is going to change an entire race description just because you want to be a mage and a dwarf. This is almost as stupid as tall dwarves

You were supposed to follow that description on moonsilver. The description is not meant to be a description of the people who don't understand the specifics of each race such as those who play dwarven mages with no rp background for doing so, but rather a description of the 'common' dwarf so you know how dwarves are supposed to act in the game. It speaks poorly of your roleplaying skills and intentions to play a dwarf who casts magic in illarion with no rp background story for why, in the same was as it is poor roleplaying to play an aggressive halfling, a vengeful elf, a friendly ork, etc. that go against the description of these races unless you do have a reason why written into your character. The section on the races on moonsilver is meant in part to give new players a description of how these races are meant to be played in illarion because as you know, there are many different concepts of each of these races in different games. Moonsilver just outlines how these races are supposed to be in illarion unless there is a good reason for going against it. ‘Because I wanted to be a mage and a dwarf’ is not a reason to give for being a dwarven mage in illarion. There should be a very good rp reason for it or else it should not be done.

Why should an entire race be changed based on one man's ideas? If dwarves were meant to be intelligent enough to cast magic, then the player would be able to set their intelligence to higher than 16, or whatever it is for dwarves.

Wohow, Cain!
Even though this topic is ooc I must protest!
It's not that dwarves are unable to cast, they just dont like magic due to extreme stubbornness. and Dwarves are infact HIGHLY intelligent!!!
Just look at me :D

I agree with Mishrack, that has nothing to do with dwarven intelligence.

The dwarven 'Magic' is different from what humans and elves know as magic.

If I remeber correctly, the moonsilver says that dwarven magic is concentrated on runes that are used to enchant items of power.

However, I personally think that dwarves should not have anything to do with this current magic-system (perhaps we can have rune-crafting skill too, now if you want to be one, roleplay).

The fact that some people play dwarves 'badly' is no reason to change the dwarven race description. And no, magic being 'cool', 'funny flames' or even 'efficent in combat' is in my opinion no reason to play a dwarven mage at all.

Drogla, ever concidered that a dwarf would perhaps not be a good race for you to play?

Heh, I didn't really mean it quite like that, Mish. I was having incomplete thoughts at the time and so my words were kind of summarized when I typed them out. I just meant that dwarves weren't exactly designed to be mages, as they aren't the most intelligent of the races. I mean.. you ARE the exception of course, Mish... along with Cara ;) Mmm.. I think what I am trying to state is still unclear.. but I can't really say it differently right now.

who cares, seriously why change the description of an entire race for one being, "The good of the one is never as important as the good of the many".
