The man stepped down the plank from the ship, his balance automaticly adjusting to the still land, he had made the trip so often. Hunched to his hieght and build, he was shrouded in a plain dark grey cloak. He always favored frey. It could hide one in the woods or during the night, if one was still, as well as good for hiding in a city where green made you stick out.
With his hood pulled over to cover his face in shadows, the man made the journey to Trollsbane in a slow, calm pace. Even as he was aware, the man's eyes were downcast. The jouney pained him in memory.
In his mind's eye, he saw Roy jumping to his feet as the man approached in a rage. the image flashed to the moment just before the impact with the water as they fell from the cliff.
The man shook his head, and stopped in surprise. Just a moment ago, he had arrived at the bridge, no, he looked up at the south Gate of Trollsbane. Lowering his head once more into shadows, he walked through. His ears strained to catch the sound of foot steps before they reached him. He did no want to be seen, as much as he wanted to run to Joxia. But he couldn't, she thought he was dead. Its for the best that she does. The thought made him grimace in anguish.
He reached the library before hearing voices. In his slow pace, it was sometime before he reached the fire where they sat. Standing still in the shadow of an apple tree, the man watch the three figures. An elf, an elfess, and a human. He did no recognize the self-important seeming elf in priest's robes, but Amaria and Fayne he recognized at once.
Listening to them talk, he listend for the current happenings, but what interested him was any talk of Joxia. He wanted to make sure she was doing well. Heavily, he leaned agienst the tree, suddenly feeling drained. Such things occured more and more often. The occurences themselves did not worry him, they tended to be only minor annoyances, what did however, was that his scar never bothered him. It never burned, or ached, or itched. He couldn't even feel his own touch there.
Jerking, his hand went to his sword hilt under the cloak. He stood in front of the tavern door now. Blood and aches. Opening the door long enough to see the room was empty, he closed it an walked away, past the group near the fire. He look for Joxia, but was careful for no one to see him clearly, though he was sure he made a mistake during the last black out.
Mattin winced as he passed Eliza's, the place where Qarneire died.

The cloaked an hooded man made his slow and steady jorney Northward. Exiting the North Gate, he raveled along the road to stand in front of the grey Refuge. There he waited for several minutres, watching and waiting to see if anyone was coming or leaving. Then he turned, walking back towards Trollsbane.
Halfway to the town, the man turned off and made two large cirrcuts around the twon before approaching the East Gate. He had aken the tedious walk so that those who had seen him ealier would let him slip from those who had seen him earlier would let him slip from their minds, as well as to watch the road for any arrival of Joxial.
And it seemed Luck decided to shine upon him. Or maybe it was Fate who played her hand. Joxia was walking towards he town from farther East. Quickly, Mattin stepped behind a shadowy tree. Joxia had a figure in tow. He recognized the man, taking some time before the dimly remembered name 'Jeff' was connected to the face.
As they entered the gate without appearing to have noticed the man, he slowly counted to ten before casually following the pair.
Almost immediatly, the two sepperated. With hardly a thought he followed Joxia. He frowned to himself. Joxia appeared more somber than ever before.
She led him to her depot at the Seahorse Inn, where he waited outside under a tree, bu with it to his back where she could easily see him. He knew that she would likely dismiss him from her mind if he did not appear to be hiding. As well as tell him how distracted she was.
During the wait he nearly went in to find her several time. And just as he had finaly given in and decided to, she stepped from the door way, turning immediatly without even noticing him, and walked around the corner of the inn. Probably to the cook-fire.
The man sighed. That was one of his favoret places to sit and think. So yet again he followed her, not shamed in the least of stalking her as he would a rabbit. He was right, she went directly to the fire and sat heavily on the log with a sigh audible even at his distance.
The sound wrenched at his insides, causing him to step forward, incidently stepping on a stick with what seemed a magnficently loud crack. He caught his breath and held himself, not making an noise. And she turned far faster than he had expected. he eyes caught his for just a flicker as he was already turning to run, her startled cry of Mattin! unheeded as he ran. He did not know why he ran, but he ran.

When she'd turned and met his eyes and joy as quickly as his name had lept to her throat followed instantly by confusion. Why was he running away? Mattin? she called out again as she stumbled to her feet in pursuit but it was enough that he was able to escape her...for now. Cursing under her breath she slowed to walk not really paying attention to where she was going but watchful for his green cloaked figure as she went back in her thoughts to the last time she'd seen him.
He'd promised to stay with her in spite of the pain it caused for both of them. Then suddenly he was gone...and there had been the letter saying he couldnt bear it and HAD to go. Is he afraid...afraid she wouldnt forgive him for leaving after he'd promised to stay? This thought almost brings a wry laugh from her surely he knows her better than that....
She came to halt realizing there were tracks in the snow leading in the direction she'd been unconciously going. Following them now, her instincts told her it was him,and knowing where they would lead, she moved slowly and quietly until she she saw him. His back was to her sitting under under that tree where they had shared that ill fated first kiss almost three years ago, and now she she fought the urge to turn and bolt before he saw her. "Stop being silly," she scolded herself and draws a deep breath to calm her nerves and approached him quickly dropping to her knees beside him in the snow placing a gentle hand on his shoulder as she whispers "Mattin...."

Mattin hold his face burried in his hands as Joxia approaches. When he feels her soft touch upon his shoulder, hearing her whisper, he raises his head to meet her eyes. "I'm sorry, Joxia. I should have stayed away."
"Why would you do that, Mattin? I've missed you." She furrows her brows as she looks at him, as if not understanding his statement.
He turns his face away from her, looking out over the river as he frowns"With everyone think me dead, it would have beeen best to stay away."
"Dead! Mattin, why would anyone think you have died?!"
"When I found Ory, and we went over the cliff... and I could have sworn you saw it. I heard your voice as I was falling.." Mattin shakes his head slowly, tring to clear and strieghten his thoughts. In truth, he could hardly remember anything. But he was sure he saw her when he fell off the cliff. He lays a hand to rest upon hers on his shoulder, taking comfort in the simple touch.

Sitting in stunned silence while the meaning of his word sunk in when she did find her voice at first it was just to whisper "So you found him..." Then as she felt the touch of his hand on hers she settled to sit next him staring with a still somewhat befuddled look out across the river as well without looking at him yet How could you...? How could you think that my thinking you are dead would be better for me?" Her expression now turning to on of hurt as she continued still looking out at the water the sunlight dappling and glinting off it seeming cheerful, unlike the mood now which should have been happy" You know I would have known if you were dead... I would have felt it...sensed it..." Joxia drew a long shaky breath slowly turning her face to look at him "I did feel it when you fell" Her voice has found some strength now and holds no doubt at all in what she is saying goes on to explain that something felt off...not right with the connection they'd always shared "but I couldnt explain it...and later when you didnt return I...I just thought it was giving up on me because the pain and the losses...the choices...were too much for you to bear after all" Again her voice looses strength and she finishes the last in a hushed tone looking away again hoping to conceal the guilt that filled her for her selfishness from him. She shivered a bit as she pulls her knees up to her chest and tightens her coat around her wrapping her arms around them and settling her chin dismally on her knees looking with her expression pained to the distant bank across the river.
