Druid abilities

Post by Elaralith »

Greetings,
Right now druids are very limited...instead of being the "nature-oriented" casters that they should be they are restricted to mere potion making. I know that more druid magic is already planned, but I think it would be beneficial if specific new druid spells were proposed and brought up as there seems only to be a vague idea about what in the future druid magic will be like...To start off I propose the following druid abilities/spells for the future:
Charm - Allows a druid to control a animal's movements even allowing a druid to make the animal attack.
Constricting vines - Causes vines to spring up and hold the target in place (like xxx xxx...)
Rapid growth - Causes all plants to grow at a faster rate? (so trees, crops could all benefit)
That is all I can think of at the moment.
Also I think an appropriate magic system for druids could be based on runes...as runes are very ancient/basic and tied to nature...any thoughts on that are welcome.

Not to mention the benefit to the Farmers and bakers.. :P
I personally believe that before anything like this, a priest magic system should be implemented ~Druids at the moment have things they can do.

Well, my only concern is that special druid runes would make druid magic very similar to mage magic, just with different spells. I like the fact that there is a major difference between those two kinds of magic now. However, the ability to calm animals and manipulate plants sounds good to me. The first one is already listed in the project description as special ability for a future druid class.

It sounds like a novel idea making these two magic abilities seem equal, but you must remember...druid magic doesn't require high intelligence to do decent abilities, as regular magic does. My other lizard character, Xariner, got the short end of the stick when he has maxed out intelligence but happens to be a druid...

Nice idea, although Perhaps it's that druid is supposed to be alchemist (sounds more likely mages mix potions) but yes, Good Idea, nature magic, vine entangle, charm, growth, erm, how about....barkskin come to think of it alot of spells from Baldurs Gate could work nicely, Summon stick aha! Perhaps not then. Call elements sounds nice and druidy.

I do not think a druid should be able to control nature, the growth spell would be more of a mage spell. However, I think the potions should have a certain power for instance... A certain Potion could be thrown on someone and it could explode on impact.

bumbol, that was MY idea, but yes since druidry is basically potion mixing i think a stun potion and a exploding potion would do nicely.

Well, what we call Druids in Illarion right now are actually alchemists as far as I can see.

Perhaps, then, just change the current Druids to Alchemists and make true druids with spell casting abilities? Everything you speak of, Elaralith, would be better served as a spell I think than as a potion.

Although I do agree, Druids should work more with nature not just the herb lore they are doing now.

These are spells I am proposing...what did you think they were? Potions? ...I really can't imagine a potion that will cause "constricting vines". Yes well I hope I cleared up that confusion...these are druid spells for the future I am proposing.

Druids right now are pretty much alchemists. Maybe we could just rename druids as alchemists, and shuffle all the ideas that deal with nature into the Ranger class mentioned in the developement. I think it mentions a charm creature type ability under Rangers so that could make sense. Having an alchemist class wouldn't be bad. Mabye make it a little more Morrowindesque.

I like all the spell ideas for druids. If druids are going to stay nature based (like they currently are,) I'd love to see the spell ideas implemented because they would add quite a bit to the characters. Another nature based spell idea is plague. Why should we be limited to making plants grow faster? Let's kill them too. The spell could just kill all crops in a 3x3 area.
