"Stop powergaming"

Post by Elaralith »

I propose that the message that pops up every time you accidentally cast on yourself "Stop powergaming" be changed. Because:
1. Most of the times people are not powergaming but have just casted on themselves accidentally.
2. The message is kind of OOC and ruins the roleplaying atmosphere of the moment in a very real way.
I suggest that the "Stop powergaming" message be changed to something like "Your spell backfires"

And I also propose that it takes half your health away and not completely you..or

get hurt as any other person would and gain no xp and die when hurt too much..or

nothing happens at all.

I have had mage chars in the past and I learn that poop happens. Just imagine that the spell backfires and kills you.
If something is to change I think you should not be able to gain magic resistance if a spell cast by you is cast on you. This is because the mage would need to concentrate on the spell being sucessful, and could not be able to concentrate on resisting the spell at the same time. And because of this the spell would be a lot more powerful.

@Kringin

As you know it was designed to stop mages from casting on themselves to gain magic resistance. If any spell hits you it should hurt in some way and a mage should never cast on themselves from an rp standpoint unless they were attempting to harm themselves greatly. The magical energy that flows through a mage is concentrated and if for some reason it is released within themselves or onto themselves it should hurt more than if it is released into the world and onto something else as should be intended. A spell backfiring should kill the magician (in illarions standards of death at least). If they were only harmed to a point of non-death there would be mages who would once again be casting on themselves for no reason other than skill gain or to impress others for a non-rp reason. Remember, it was altered to this format for a good reason.

@Elaralith

I agree that getting an ooc message could be annoying but you also must remember that it is designed to teach newbies or those new to magic not to cast on themselves and why. If they receive a question that is completely in-character they will most likely continue to attempt to cast on themselves thinking it was a mere accident or fluke that they were killed, especially if they are the only ones in the game at the time and have nobody else to ask. If the message is changed it should still give this 'Stop Powergaming!' message but it should be after the in-character message and written in the double brackets (( )) to indicate it is ooc. This will help those new to the game and those like you who are more experienced stay in their roles. If the message about powergaming is no longer given the boards will be once again flooded with new mages complaining about why they were killed for only casting a spell on themselves. The current message gives the impression that it is a strict decision by the game creators and that is what it was. In my opinion that message should stay and if anything is to change, something in-character should be added to this message.

Thank you.

Which is why some standards need to be changed and some are ridiculous.

What are the spells that people cast? Look at the graphics. Most consist of some type of explosion. If a mage cast that on himself, he would have no defense, being concentrated on the magic, and therefore would let down his physical stability. The mage would likely die from a spell backfire. That's how I see it.

I see it as though you would faint after the first back fire and any more spells that would or have been casted would be automatically neutralized. I know everyone has their own opinion on what happens when a spell back fires but that was mine.

I know its old, but...I am agreeing with them. This is an important issue.

A weird thing happend the other day to me...I casted on an ogre. I was pretty sure i hit the ogre, but it said "stop powergaming". It was very strange though, becuase i didnt die, lose skill, or lose health. It just said that.....

But, I have died many times in the past from accidently casting on myself. I think the "backfire"thing is pretty good idea.

Thanks for your time~
