so... me and a friend were fighting... and it was brought up that it would be better if we were able to use a single fists when we were using a shield... you know, having a shield in hand, so when fighting, only one fist appears, in the same idea as having a single sword in hand etc.

It's been proposed before. Nitram was supposedly making a wrestling shield for Taliss!

You can fight with a shield IRL with fists.. it would just be hard. You'd lose a lot of mobility and gathering space.
