Spell Components

Post by Elaralith »

Greetings!
I propose that there be spell components that will be a necessity for certain spells. Instead of just having to buy a magic book and learning the spell to be able to cast the spell a mage could be required to obtain certain spell components that would be used up in the event of the casting whether the spellw as successful or not. For example for the casting of cun jus (water tornado) as well as having learned from spellbooks the runes cun and jus a mage would need a bucket of water to cast it.

The mastery of the runes is what causes the spell to work or fail. A rune is a representation of something magical, something extremely powerful and its symbol harnesses this power into a physical or mental item that one can concentrate their mental faculties upon and thus create or weave a spell.

The aspects of the natural world that are affected by the use of these powerful runes are found in the world around you. The water is in the air for the cun jus spell you mentioned. Light can be wrought from the sun and stars, lightning from the heavens, fire from the depths of the earth, healing from the internal soul or from the gods. All the elements are natural and the runes allow one to be a master over these items by learning the ancient ways. There is no reason why you would need to use a group of flowers to aid in a magic system that already uses runes. They could be used for ceremony but should not be required when there is already a system in place. The runes are the system in and of it self.

I agree with Elaralith on this one. I would add an amount of realism. Most of the times that you hear of anyone casting a spell, weather it be a wizard, a witch, or priest, they are using some sort of components.

Sand for a sleep spell, or feathers for a levitate spell for example.

The examples you gave require one thing in them to focus the persons magical energies and abilities into the spell they are weaving. In Illarion this is done by the use of runes. The focusing tools are the runes themselves and nothing more and nothing less. They are based on northern myth and they are the foundation on which the illarion magic system is built. If you require something more or something less to cast a spell you are changing the entire magic system, the belief system of magic and all roleplaying due to magic runes already in illarion. There are different ways to focus ones mind into weaving a spell, use of herbs, dreams, chants, physical objects that are close to the heart, many many things, RUNES are one of the options for this and that was what was chosen. Other things are not needed.

Also, we must look at the ever important originality factor  . It is so annoying in ALL the other games when you use up your runes and need to get new ones. Please, oh pleeease spare me from another game where you need to buy new runes every 5 seconds. :D

hmmm...would that be referred to Runescape? :?
Er....i dont want to have to use runes.or anything like that. I liked runescape for a while, but HATED the magic part of it. I came to illarion, and LOVED the magic stuff. So, id hate to see that go.

Ok first to stay on topic ;) No I don’t want this game to become like other games. I don’t want to have to gather herbs to use reagents. Or have runes that disappear after one use. Been done far too much. At least Illarion has a UNIQUE magic system.
