Dwarven Craftsmen

Post by Basal »

Hello,

I noticed that dwarves have a minimum of 2 dexterity and a maximum of only 17. However, according to the attribute explanations, dexterity is the determining factor for crafting. Now, from what I understand of racial backgrounds, dwarves are supposed to be master craftsmen and should be the ones to excel in smithing especially. But in this game is there not a contradiction between the racial background and the system setup? Or is there some factor that gives dwarves an advantage in crafting anyways? Please explain.

Thank you,
Olive

Most dwarves do not have easier access to iron and coal because most dwarves are not part of Silverbrand, especially new dwarves who need it the most.

Basal,

Every dwarf has the 'ability' to join, they just need to ask. Now, even English speaking Dwarves can ask and join too.

Every guild and settlement has a process to join. Every 'citizen' gets benefits with their membership such as resources, tools, comraderie, and identity. Every Guild and settlement provides some benefits according to what you want.

Not to do this 'cheapens' the Role-Play of having different races, causes and professions.

Human nature is that we need some sort of 'community' of like-minded characters. Those that "Go it alone" are usually poor RP'ers and powergamers and tend not to last long. Those that last....tend not to play much.

I would talk to Dwarfen Players, get involved IG, and learn what it means to be "dwarven". There are secrets, places and advantages only dwarves know.

:D

I see what you mean Jupiter, but my question about the technicalities of a dwarf being able to be a crafter better than other races as fitting with the racial backgrounds, remains unanswered.

Could someone from the technical staff give a definitive answer? Thank you.

Actaullay, when it concerns raw attributes, the Halfling is the better crafter.

Halflings have the highest dex due to their 'Thief-like" skills...which are also needed for crafting. However, their lower strength makes them worse than dwarves to mine and smith.

It's not about attributes, but what is each race 'suited' to do.

I don't believe any description of Dwarves says they're the 'best' crafters...only that they are 'great workers' of steel. Has nothing to do with attributes, but where you spend your time. 8)

Dwarfs have a racial bonus on smithing that balances the lack of dexterity.

There are "racial bonuses" on skills? I never knew that.

Does every race get a bonus towards some skill?

I think that it is a good thing for races to have racial bonuses because it complements the fact that we have different races. The only thing I would propose is that the "unique talents" for each race be clearly defined and made available for new players. It is particularly important that new players are aware of these unique talents because new players are the ones that choose which race they will be playing. If new players knew about these racial bonuses I think that there would be a better representation for the different races in the game, instead of the current stale, monoculture state where we have 80-100% of the ingame characters being of the human race.

Is it just me or are you always asking the devs to open the big black box of secrets to just tell anyone what a race is good in, I highly disagree as this has nothing to do with rp at all and just will create more people who play stuck chars.

If everyone would just their chars after their bonuses we got hundred elves who just do one thing, hundred dwarves who should do another thing, that would be quiete stupid, as those, who choose their char depending on bonuses, will just play like a human anyway.

20 humans online right now and 5 non humans.

This is what I regularly see, and it means that 80% of the ingame population is humans and all the other races (elves, dwarves, orcs, halflings etc) combined only adds up to 20%.

I think that new players need to be encouraged more to play the other races, and this can be partly done by informing new players what unique traits the game offers to each race.

i disagree

i think all first time playres should play as humans until they get a feel for how the races think and act by observing them first

since 99% of the people play non humans as human anyways

Aye, amen to that.

A human char, unfortunately, is probably the easiest char to rp ig. So therefore, a new player should first learn to rp adequately with a human before he goes on towards a bigger role as rping a elf, dwarf, or other race. Personally, I've played every race and I can say that human is the easiest for me.

However, as much as this is fact, a new player has the free will to play any character he wishes.
