blacksmithing

Post by Leon DeGamme »

I am a fan of ultime online and love the crafting system. Unfortunately, I don't think at this point it is worth paying a monthly fee for a very old game. I am wondering if the crafting system here is similar to Ultima's system. In ultima, you mine ores, create ingots and then smith them into weapons/armor. Different ores (requiring diffent mining levels to get) impart different effects on the weapons/armor they are made into. Are there different ores in this game that impart special effects to the item they are made into? if not, is it possible to create "special" items at all through crafting or is it solely to create mundane non-special items? Is there another job specialty that adds properties to items? The Wiki was not very helpful to me, unfortunately.

I don't know ultima, but I know how our system works, basicly it seems the same, you mine Ores, make ignots and finally create tools, armors and weapons out of the ignots and several other ingrediences.

On the down side you won't be able to make an ice sword out of a normal sword and simply add something to it, neither cann you create a more deadly sword with adding another item on the sword, so its more basic, but as your skill grows you can make better and more deadly weapons, but those will cos much more ressources than your normal sword, there are also rare swords liek fire or ligthing swords or magical dwarfen axes, but those normally can't be created, they can only be found during quests or treasures.

What do you mean more deadly weapons? like "longsword +1"? or do you mean instead of creating a short sword, now i can create a greatsword?

I used to play ultima so...

There are 3 types of ore (and one super-rare one) in this game, and its either one or the other. You can't make a longsword out of copper for example, but then again you can't make certain things with iron.

There isn't 'exceptional' like in ultima, instead there are different qualities.

For example a 'very good new longsword' is better than an 'average new longsword'.

so, does your smithing level determine if its and average longsword or very good? and what is the difference between average and very good?

its a function of the skils primary stat and your skill in smithing as well as the quality of the parts used, and a random luck modifyer iirc

The crafting system is like this.
To make the commonly used sword, here is all the things you need.
First of all, you will need the correct tools.
Pickaxe for mining, and then you would need two coal and two iron ores.
Next you will need smelting tools, (crucible and princers) and melt them down.
After that, you need a hammer, and a sword handle. Not a large one, a regular one. You then use the hammer, and a window appears. Depending upon your skill, (and at first you won't be able to, this is a bit higher leveled then where a crafter starts at) you will see things that you can make. As you gain skill, you will 'unlock' new items to make. These new items will not be very good. It takes a bit more skill to make 'good' quality items. So, the most difficult to make thing you can make, say, a longsword, will not be very good until -after- you skill past it. Its better to try it and see for yourself.
But remember, this game is not about crafting, its about roleplay.

also like to note: the actual scripting for this crafting system is very complex. you will make a range of quality in items (like real life) sometimes it will be an average, slightly scraped longsword or an average, new longsword or maybe an good, slightly scraped longsword. your abilities affect this (higher dex is needed to craft well made items) your skill level affects this (you don't see any numbers, just a color) your tools also affect this. you will make better tools with excellent, new tools compared to bad, old tools. tools do degrade as they are used.
