Well, for want of knowing any better, here are some more (small) ideas for Illarion...
- I've read a suggestion to allow people to customise the "somebody" that other players see. So instead of "somebody smiles", they might see "the short girl smiles". Good idea. Also, automatically supplying the longer description when another player "examines" your character - also good.
What about also being able to customise the "critical hit" messages? I'm not sure if other characters see the "you land a heavy strike against..." messages, but as a fighter, I think it'd be really nice to be able to replace that with something more descriptive, which other characters would also see.
- The way the Escape key exits the game might be good for emergency exits, but goes against usability guidelines for most OSs, where the key is normally used to cancel a dialog. OK, I'm slowly getting used to not pressing it to get rid of the "list your wares" sub-screen, but would it be so bad to have an "are you sure" dialog before exiting?
Oh, and is this exit key even listed in the manual? I know it took me ages to work it out the first time I played...
- Certain tool-tips, specifically the "this is the map" and the "this is an inhabitant of Illarion" ones, are unnecessary after having been popped-up once or twice, and mostly just get in the way at critical moments of combat. I'd love to have a way to disable those.

Those are just to help a brand new newbie, and unless you're a mage, you wont be needing to ever use them.- Certain tool-tips, specifically the "this is the map" and the "this is an inhabitant of Illarion" ones, are unnecessary after having been popped-up once or twice, and mostly just get in the way at critical moments of combat. To turn them off, just change the value in "Show help text after".
I think if you put 0, it disables them, (not sure) otherwise just put an arbitrarily high number.
Only the player who lands the strike sees this message (such messages are called "informs", only the relevant player sees it.).What about also being able to customise the "critical hit" messages? No (simple) way currently to customise those as they are hard-coded.
The others see only the blood on the floor.

Which is a shame. For a fighter, a critical hit represents having done something especially clever, and for the game it's an opportunity to add colour and character to a fight. I'm thinking of something like "#me curses in goblin. The goblin looks enraged and lunges forward - right into #me's swinging sword."pharse wrote:Only the player who lands the strike sees this message (such messages are called "informs", only the relevant player sees it.).What about also being able to customise the "critical hit" messages? Of course, I'd also like to replace the first "goblin" with "#race" and the second with "#enemy" to make such statements even more flexible.

Using the options dialog, it can only be set between 0 and 10. 0 shows the tooltips instantly, and 10 after 10 seconds. However, you can edit the value of toolTipDelay in the config file and set it higher.Hadrian_Abela wrote:Those are just to help a brand new newbie, and unless you're a mage, you wont be needing to ever use them.- Certain tool-tips, specifically the "this is the map" and the "this is an inhabitant of Illarion" ones, are unnecessary after having been popped-up once or twice, and mostly just get in the way at critical moments of combat. Trying this out reminds me of a bug - changing some value in the options screen and hitting "save" will result in error messages if there's not a valid value for every input in the options dialog. It's not possible to leave the other options blank.

Re: More proposals...
All those proposals are...downright useless, let me explain.
We allready have an exame command anyway, oratleast to come, so ~not~ good.
To sum it up these "proposals" are simply for the sake of being lazy, everything here can be other done by yourself or are simply so small that noone should care about it.
Is it s hard for you to writte an "#me exames xyz" orsomething?mt wrote: - I've read a suggestion to allow people to customise the "somebody" that other players see. What is your problem, how about you rp for a chance and won't let the game do everythign foryou, even now I can think of something like "#me laughs as his Sword cuts off the arm ofthe Mummy, a foul stench emmitts from the open wound" or "#me drives his macef into the ribcage of the sceleton, Bones are turned into dust, as the undead opponent slowly falls together"mt wrote: What about also being able to customise the "critical hit" messages? I heard that honestly the first time, I'm playing other games along illarion too, but inever mixed up the keystrokes for it and ask yourself something, why is the "escape" key called like this hmm?mt wrote: - The way the Escape key exits the game might be good for emergency exits, but goes against usability guidelines for most OSs, where the key is normally used to cancel a dialog. As long as I know tooltips like "this is an inhabitan from Illarion" only show up when you hover your mouse over a monster and vanish as soon as you move the mouse away, and the tips like "street" or "grass" are so small that they don't really bother, unless you simply look at everytile in your whole view.mt wrote: - Certain tool-tips, specifically the "this is the map" and the "this is an inhabitant of Illarion" ones, are unnecessary after having been popped-up once or twice, and mostly just get in the way at critical moments of combat. Well, it probably is good, which is why it's going to be implemented!Pellandria wrote: Is it s hard for you to writte an "#me exames xyz" orsomething?

Anyway, I only wrote that I agreed that this is a good idea.
You're right. That's probably the simplest way. Personally I like to prepare text in advance for certain situations, but I understand that other people don't.Pellandria wrote: What is your problem, how about you rp for a chance and won't let the game do everythign foryou, even now I can think of something like "#me laughs as his Sword cuts off the arm ofthe Mummy, a foul stench emmitts from the open wound" or "#me drives his macef into the ribcage of the sceleton, Bones are turned into dust, as the undead opponent slowly falls together"
Well, maybe that's because you don't regularly make use of the escape key in other applications? In Windows, the escape key usually acts as a short-cut to the "cancel" button in a dialog. How soon the message vanishes is, I think, configurable.Pellandria wrote: As long as I know tooltips like "this is an inhabitan from Illarion" only show up when you hover your mouse over a monster and vanish as soon as you move the mouse away...
When fighting multiple enemies, I'm sometimes waiting for one to die so that I can attack the next one, and these moments can be quite tense. A large pop-up, suddenly obscuring the combat, isn't enhancing the experience!

A value of 0-10 for the tool tip delay isn't enough to avoid that, but knowing that I can hack the configuration file to give it a larger delay is okay.
I can see why you say that, and yes - I will type more myself.Pellandria wrote: To sum it up these "proposals" are simply for the sake of being lazy, everything here can be other done by yourself or are simply so small that noone should care about it.
Still, I think the game is not yet perfect, and discussion on how to improve it is useful. I mention some small things, which are perhaps only minor, but perhaps also simple to change/fix. Sorry if you only find that annoying.

Yeah, cos the illarion combat system needs the most combat initiative ever. You move the mouse a TINY BIT and it won't show a description. Hell, when you ctrl click something it's not like you're doing anything other than waiting, what's the problem with moving the mouse? I personally keep my mouse in the bottom right corner of the screen cos I'm ocd, but that prevents and popups and then when I need it I drag it to where I'm going then drag it back. I don't see the problem here.mt wrote:A value of 0-10 for the tool tip delay isn't enough to avoid that, but knowing that I can hack the configuration file to give it a larger delay is okay.
And come on, escape should be the first button you try to log out with. If you've ever played ANY full screen game e.g. an fps you should know that esc will bring up the quit command or at least a menu which provides a quit button.
And of course illa isn't perfect, we have like 1 graphics designer and a small handful of coders and it's in beta.
