Writing would be a good skill to be implemented. That would produce the profession "Scribe".
For what purpose would the books serve if they were able to be made by players?

Player written books could serve many purposes (in fact, I think that something along these lines was what the original poster intended.) If a person wanted to write a story and (if the owners let them) donate it to the library for someone to read, they could do it this way. A guild could write down their rules and charter so that people could access them in the game. A bard could keep a record of his songs in his book for easy memorization. The priests of Elara might commission a study of something or other (since she's the god of knowledge and wisdom) and the results could be recorded in a book. Someone might write down the story of a quest they went on. A priest of Irmoram might write down the ceremonies he uses so that young acolytes can study them in order to perform their parts. People could write books for entertainment, to keep a record of something, to inform people, to persuade someone. A person might want to write a book for any of these reasons. It could be something for their own personal enjoyment, or it could be shared with someone else. If they wanted to, they could make multiple copies of books and give them away (although this would cost lots of money.) Perhaps books could be donated to the library and, if the owners approved, they could be placed on the shelves. Think of a reason that someone writes books today, and I'm sure there is a correlation to Illarion life. Probably the best part of having player written books, is that each book would be unique. If the only stories are written by the GMs, that's just more work for them to do, and many books will end up sounding alike (no offense to GMs intended.) If the players write them, then there are many more potential authors with more diversity of style and subject. Some books will be serious, some will be funny, some sad, some trash, and some a mixture of all of the above. Just because player written books wouldn't affect anything except the skills used to create them, doesn't mean they aren't important. In fact, books could be the most useful of all tools for role-playing. Just think of how many hints for quests could be hidden in a book. Overall, IMHO, books written by players would do more to add to the depth and realism of Illarion than any skill could.
