The sound of trickling water was distinct, the rushing wakes running along as well as it may over rocks and pebbles, at last being free of its icy winter prison. The grass was moist, dew lining each greening blade. The day was young, the skies grey and the land shrouded in a light mist that rose only a foot from the ground. Few animals were stirring yet, only the woeful calls of doves echoing between the rises of the Copper Mountains, their wings silent as they flitted to and fro. Yet, a silhouette slowly moving along the stream's edge broke the appearance of lifelessness.
With only the stream to guide her, Alaira stepped tenderly among the rocks and grass that led into the mountain valley. Her feet were bare, each step knocking away the cool dew upon the grass. She moved in silence, as if afraid to wake the rest of the land with her early travels. Her vivid brown eyes ran along the face of the rocks that rose up to either side of her, a gentle smile playing over her soft lips. The place was perfect, a solace to the young woman.
Alas, she found herself at the end of the valley, the rocks only allowing the stream to trickle through its cracks and crevices. Inhaling deeply, Alaira moves to a rock placed beneath an overhanging tree, the only one in the thin break of the mountains. For a moment, she closes her eyes and simply takes in the surroundings. A breeze slips past, invisible fingers playing with the curly brown tendrils of hair before moving on. The smile on the girl's lips broadens before she opens her eyes and eases a small bag from her left shoulder. With a barely audible "thud", the bag falls to her side. A slender hand slips beneath the leather fold, soon pulling out a small book. With a deep breath, Alaira looks down and parts the book's cover, her fingers moving along to a certain page. For mere moments, the girl reads over the words before she lifts her proud chin and closes her eyes again. Her hands lift from the book slowly as she lets herself immerse into the silence surrounding her. Slowly, the thin fingers move. In the same moment, rocks of varying sizes seem to tumble down the wall of stone opposite her before they shift along the short grass. With a splash, the rocks move through the shallow stream before coming to a sudden halt at Alaira's feet. With a now triumphant look on her face, the girl opens her eyes and pulls her hands up, the rocks willingly coming off the ground to hover midair.
Without hesitation, Alaira rises from the stone she had seated herself upon and steps through the soft grass, the rocks she controls moving slowly about her. Only as her bare feet stepped into the water, the cool liquid only lapping against her ankles, did she stop. Her head tilts back gradually and her smile evens out as she bites her bottom lip and moves her hands about, sending the rocks into a strange little dance. As the stones move about her, her eyes slowly drift to peer between the rises of the cliff walls, watching the sky as it slowly turns from deep grey to vivid streaks of orange and yellow. Dawn was upon her.
